  and west central New Mexico, including the following areas, in 
  central New Mexico, Central Highlands, Estancia Valley, Lower Rio 
  Grande Valley, Middle Rio Grande Valley/Albuquerque Metro Area, 
  San Agustin Plains and Adjacent Lowlands, Sandia/Manzano Mountains 
  Including Edgewood, South Central Highlands and Upper Tularosa 
  Valley. In north central New Mexico, Espanola Valley, Glorieta 
  Mesa Including Glorieta Pass, Jemez Mountains and Santa Fe Metro 
  Area. In west central New Mexico, San Francisco River Valley, 
  Southwest Mountains, West Central Highlands, West Central 
  Mountains and West Central Plateau.

* Through late tonight.

* Slow moving showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rainfall,

* Wildfire burn scars in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains will be 
  especially susceptible to flash flooding as a moist and unstable 
  atmosphere is expected to bring numerous showers and thunderstorms 
  over the area. Just one half to three quarters of an inch of 
  rainfall can pose substantial impacts to burn scars, as most of 
  the rainfall will quickly turn to runoff with the potential for 
  flash flooding and abrupt debris flows.

...RISK OF FLASH FLOODING IN SOME AREAS TODAY THROUGH AT LEAST MID
WEEK...

.SYNOPSIS...
The monsoon will kick in with a vengeance today through the week
ahead with daily rounds of scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall, especially along
and east of the continental divide. There will be a heightened risk
of flash flooding today through Tuesday night, when 1 to 2 inches of
rain will be common along and east of the central mountain chain,
except 3 to over 4 inches from the south central mountains eastward
through Chaves County, and lighter amounts west of the central
mountain chain. In addition, a gusty east wind is forecast to
continue below canyons opening into the central valley today through
at least Monday night with speeds potentially reaching 45 mph at
times in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH MONDAY)...
Outflow from yesterday's and the overnight's convection has helped
to push the backdoor cold front and the low-level moisture westward,
and the latest analysis at the time of this writing has the boundary
approaching Grants. This moisture gradient will continue its
westward journey and should reach the western border by late
morning. With increasing moisture areawide and a large longwave
trough over the Rockies, a very unsettled and unseasonably cool
pattern will take shape today and continue each day this week. High
temperatures will fall several degrees today and will be well below
normal areawide. Meanwhile, PWATs rise to well above an inch across
eastern NM which is about 1 to 2 standard deviations above normal.
All of this will result in a shift to potentially significant flash
flooding concerns starting today. Did go ahead and issue a Flash
Flood Watch for the southeastern corner of the area where confidence
was highest in the flash flooding potential for today. Models
indicate that the instability will shift into the southern half of
the area with CAPE values of about 1500-2000 J/kg as well as
relatively stronger upper-level winds. Forecast soundings from
around the southeast also indicate a saturated profile all of which
indicates showers and thunderstorms should be very capable of
producing heavy rainfall. Also issued a Flash Flood Watch for the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains where the main concern is flooding on or
near burn scars.

Models are in good agreement that convection will be ongoing Sunday
night, thus opted to continue the Flash Flood Watch through 12Z
Monday. Future shifts will evaluate the (likely) need to
expand/extend as necessary. On Monday, the large trough develops a
closed low over the New Mexico Bootheel. The persistent easterly
flow continues to pump moisture into the area, and widespread
activity continues all day Monday. Very saturated sounding profiles
once again indicate that flash flooding will continue to be the
significant concern. Right now, confidence is still highest across
the southeast where higher amounts of instability will stay.
However, the threat will also depend on Sunday's rainfall totals and
potentially saturated areas.

LONG TERM...(MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY)...
Monday night through Tuesday or Tuesday night, heavy rain and a risk
of flash flooding are expected to continue along and east of the
south central mountains and northward into Torrance and Guadalupe
Counties. An upper level disturbance that forms over the southwest
mountains on Monday will drift slowly toward the southwest and
eventually over Tucson Tuesday, where it is expected to stall and
lose its defining characteristics. Low level convergence below this
feature will continuously draw moist easterly upslope flow into south
central and east central NM, while diffluence aloft to the east of
the disturbance enables deep moist convection to persist. Scattered
to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue elsewhere across
the forecast area as well, but the greatest risk for flash flooding
will be over east central and southeast areas where an additional
0.75 to 2.50 inches of rain accumulation are expected with locally
higher amounts. The Capitan Mountains could receive over 3 inches of
rain Monday night through Tuesday night.

During the latter half of the week daily rounds of scattered to
numerous showers and thunderstorms capable of producing locally heavy
rainfall will continue, but the heaviest rainfall is expected Friday
into Saturday. A 500 mb high pressure system is forecast to migrate
westward from the southeast US to roughly El Paso Wednesday through
Thursday as the low level flow over NM veers more out of the south.
Although low level moisture will trend downward during this period,
elevated moisture will continue to flow into the state around the
high from the southwest. Then, the high will weaken as it shifts
westward over the bootheel Thursday night through Friday night, and a
moist backdoor cold front plunges southwestward through eastern,
then central and southwest parts of the state. This will leave ample
moisture in place for disturbances in northwest flow aloft to keep
deep convection going areawide Friday into the weekend. Besides the
increased risk of flash flooding Friday through Saturday, there will
also be a risk of strong-to-severe thunderstorms along and east of
the central mountain chain Thursday night through Saturday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
There are no critical fire weather concerns this week as an
unseasonably cool and wet pattern takes shape. With a large trough
across the Rockies and persistent easterly flow, moisture will
continue to be pumped into the area which will result in daily
rounds of widespread wetting rainfall. The heavy rainfall combined
with slow and erratic storm motions may lead to areas of flash
flooding, particularly on or near burn scars. Ventilation rates this
week will generally be a mixed bag of poor to fair across the area.

.AVIATION...
06Z TAF CYCLE
The strongest thunderstorm activity at this time is across Chaves
County where thunderstorm impacts will persist at KROW through about
08Z before it moves into west TX. Elsewhere, lighter shower activity
is also persisting across central and eastern NM where gusty winds
will likely be the main hazard with these. With shower activity
developing east of the Sandia/Manzano Mountains, gusty easterly
outflow is expected to persist at KABQ with gusts of 35 knots through
10Z. Thus, an extension on the AWW will be forthcoming. Spotty MVFR
to IFR conditions will develop overnight across the eastern plains.
Another active day is in store Sunday with shower and thunderstorm
activity developing early and becoming widespread by early afternoon.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms along and east of the
central mountain chain this afternoon and evening where large hail,
damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and locally heavy rainfall are
expected. The potential exists for flash flooding below recent burn
scars in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Sunday through Tuesday, daily rounds of scattered-to-numerous
showers and thunderstorms will be capable of producing locally heavy
rainfall along and east of the continental divide. Some of the
heaviest rain is expected over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and
along and east of the south central mountains, where rain
accumulation should generally reach 0.75 to 2.25 inches with locally
heavier amounts. The potential exists for flash flooding to develop,
especially in complex terrain, below recent burn scars, and in urban
parts of the southeast like Roswell, Clovis, and Portales.

Wednesday through Friday, daily rounds of scattered-to-numerous
showers and thunderstorms capable of producing locally heavy rainfall
will continue, mainly along and east of the continental divide. The
potential exists for severe thunderstorms along and east of the
central mountain chain each afternoon and evening.
