.SYNOPSIS...An unusually potent late-season storm will first bring
gusty winds for the rest of the weekend, then rain and mountain
snow to the region for much of the upcoming week.

.DISCUSSION...through next Saturday.
The forecast concerns continue to be the wind over the weekend
followed by a wet week.
Not much change in forecast thinking, with the main low pressure
system for next week still looking on track, currently digging
down offshore along the west coast, swinging into the region next
week. Confidence in wind gusts on Sunday exceeding 40 MPH across
parts of the area has warranted a Wind Advisory. The strongest
belt looks to occur from roughly Death Valley across the NNSS to
Rachel, NV. There is a brief window for downslope winds on the
eastern Sierra slopes and Owens valley early Sunday morning, but
stability quick erodes, shear increases, and precipitation begins
to reach the crest, which should all act to shut down any
downslope that does develop fairly quickly.
The initial round of precipitation works from west to east across
the entire CWA on Monday, with a few rounds looking likely through
Thursday. At least embedded thunder is possible across various
portions of the area for just about every day Monday-Thursday. One
of the tricker aspects will be precipitation type for the Spring
Mountains. Snow levels should quickly drop below 7,000 feet on
Monday, and remain well below that for the duration of the event.
However, given we are not into April, warm temperatures and ground
may preclude much accumulation, and this is the case with the NBM.
However, given the abnormal depth/strength of this system for
April, and the tendency for bias-corrected guidance to
underestimate the magnitude of temperature changes with new
airmasses, combined with usually fairly flat diurnal temperature
curves with unsettled days, felt there was enough evidence to
adjust high temperatures for the mountains downward several
degrees, which was sufficient to allow for accumulating snow as
low as 6,500'. With over a foot of snow looking possible in Kyle
Canyon if they remain cold enough to allow accumulation, went
ahead with a Winter Storm Watch Monday through Wednesday for the
Spring Mountains, with two or three rounds of heavy snow possible
in that time frame. Again, temperatures will be close, so those
with interests in the Spring Mountains should continue to monitor
the latest forecast.
For the deserts, rain amounts still look to meet or beat daily
records in several locations. Fairly widespread amounts over the
week should be near or exceed one inch from the Mojave Preserve
northward across Clark, Inyo, Esmeralda, Lincoln, and Nye
counties. This is a little different from the usual pattern of a
Mohave County max, due to the system being a bit further off shore
and further northward for a period of time instead of hugging the
San Diego coast. Thursday night into Friday, the system should
begin to clear to the area to the east with precipitation chances
ending with recovering temperatures for next weekend.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds this morning will begin to
pick up early this afternoon out of the southwest. Speeds of 15
knots gusting near 25 knots can be expected which will continue into
Sunday. High clouds will move over the area aoa 20k feet.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Light winds this morning will be replaced by gusty,
southwest winds this afternoon. Speeds between 10-20 knots gusting
20-30 knots are expected. These winds will likely continue overnight
at sites like KHND and KDAG while others will see gusts cease or
become more intermittent later this evening. Even if gusts die off,
speeds will remain up around 10 knots through tomorrow morning.
Winds will pick up Sunday afternoon with many areas seeing stronger
winds than today; especially areas north and west of I-15.
