What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Las Vegas, NV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Oct 24, 11:08 AM PDT, 2 hours 48 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 24, 11:08 AM PDT, 2 hours 48 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1108 AM PDT Sat Oct 24 2020

.SYNOPSIS...Mild weather will continue today before a cold fast
moving storm diving down from the north will bring strong north
winds, brief showers and an abrupt drop in temperatures late Sunday
and Monday with freezing temperatures even reaching portions of
southern Nevada by Tuesday morning. Quiet weather will quickly
return as temps warm back up to seasonal normals by midweek.
&&

.UPDATE...
High clouds have have overspread areas south and east of I-15 this
morning and are expected to shift southward through this evening
leaving mostly sunny skies for most areas by later today. Winds will
pick out of the southwest this afternoon as a low pressure system
off the southern Cali coast nudges closer to shore today. Gusts of
20 to 30 mph will be possible which will bring waves on the lakes up
to 1 to 1.5 feet. Temps remain near normal for the second to last
day before the temps tank Sunday night.

&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday.

Considerable high clouds will spread across the region this morning
then clear from clear from north to south this afternoon as mild
conditions continue and moderate south-southwest winds develop
across much of our forecast area. The clouds and increasing breezes
are associated with a weak circulation off the SoCal Coast which
will slowly be pushed toward northern Baja ahead of the well
advertised deep cold trough diving out of Western Canada which will
impact our region late Sunday into Monday.

The latest ensemble models and NBM gridded forecast have not
indicated any need to make significant changes to the main impacts
which we have been highlighting across our region which will
primarily be strong winds Sunday night through Monday along with
freezing temperatures. Precipitation chances have been trending
downward for Sunday evening due to the track of the upper low center
and associated moisture being positioned mostly over Utah/Arizona
and the Rockies/Four Corners region. There will be a limited amount
of moisture along the leading edge of the cold front which will
produce some brief scattered showers late Sunday afternoon and
evening before very dry air quickly spreads down in the northerly
flow on the west side of the upper low. Chances of breaking the dry
streak at McCarran Airport are now only about 20 percent.

North winds gusting to 40 mph may occur with the initial frontal
passage late Sunday afternoon and evening then strong winds will
become more widespread Sunday night through Monday...particularly
along and near the Colorado River Valley.

The cold air mass will lead to subfreezing temps in the 20s across
northern Inyo County and south central Nevada by Monday morning.
First freezes of the season then appear likely for areas around
southern Nye, Clark and central Mohave counties by Tuesday morning.
The exception will be most of the Las Vegas Valley where very few
models are indicating the potential for temps below 35 degrees.
North winds 10 to 20 mph will likely still be occurring which should
prevent temps to reach freezing across much of the metro area. The
system is forecast to pull away across southern Arizona Tuesday and
high temps increase about 10-15 degrees after bottoming out
Monday afternoon.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Friday.

We should see a quick rebound in temperatures to near seasonal
normals Wednesday through Friday with highs in the mid-upper 70s to
lower 80s across the deserts under a mean ridge of high pressure
building over the region. Light to moderate north breezes may
linger Wednesday and Thursday.
&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Dry and mild weather with increasing southwest breezes today will
give way to strong north winds gusting 35 to 45 mph late Sunday
through Monday as a cold system sweeps down from the north.
Brief scattered showers over southern Nevada and northwest Arizona
on the leading edge of the front Sunday evening will be followed by
very dry air which will combine with the gusty winds to create
critical conditions across much of the region Monday.
&&

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Initially light and variable winds will
shift to predominantly southwest and increase with minor gusts in
the 21-23Z time frame. Once the shift happens, this should prevail
through the rest of the evening and overnight period. Gusts of up to
20 kts will subside but sustained winds could stay at or above 8 kts
overnight and through tomorrow morning as well. A wind shift to the
north is expected ahead of a cold front passage tomorrow afternoon.
This wind shift could begin as early as 17-19Z but stronger winds
are expected in the late afternoon.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Mild southwest breezes are expected for
KVGT/KHND/KIFP/KEED today with KDAG seeing gusts up to 25 kts by the
late afternoon and staying elevating through the rest of the TAF
period. KBIH will once again see the most impact, due to smoke
causing visibility reductions. MVFR visibility will be again
possible overnight however smoke will likely clear up tomorrow
morning and more so in the afternoon when winds shift to the north
and become gusty due to a cold front passage. This cold front will
also shift all terminals to the north during the afternoon and
evening hours tomorrow. Very low chance for -RA but if so, should
not result in any significant impacts to the terminals.
