.SYNOPSIS...A strong storm system will push through the Desert
Southwest beginning today, bringing high winds, a stark drop in
temperatures, and slight chances of scattered showers and high
elevation snow for some. Quiet weather with temperatures warming
back to seasonal averages expected Tuesday onward.
&&

.UPDATE...Thicker clouds had moved/developed over the Las Vegas
Valley this evening, right on schedule, and will exit to the south
before midnight, also on schedule. These thicker clouds will not
likely produce rain in the valley though, as very dry surface air
with dewpoints in the single digits had surged in behind the cold
front. Winds in Esmeralda, Nye, and Mohave counties had mostly
subsided, so allowed the Wind Advisories for those areas to expire
at 8 PM. Strong winds will continue southward down the Colorado
River Valley this evening, and will monitor this area for possible
upgrade to High Wind Warning as noted by previous shift. Very dry
surface air mentioned above plus the strong winds mean the Red Flag
Warnings look good as well. All in all, the forecast is in good
shape this evening, so no update planned at the moment. Will
continue to monitor.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Gusty northwest winds have pushed into
the Valley this evening with gusts between 25-40kts. These winds
will gradually shift to the north-northeast by midnight with strong
gusts continuing. On Monday, winds will shift more north
northeasterly up to around 25 knots gusting around 35 knots under
clear skies. Periods of blowing dust will be possible with stronger
winds but isn't expected to restrict vsbys enough to impact
operations at the terminal. SCT-BKN100 expected through midnight,
but clouds are expected to dissipate during the early morning hours
with clear skies.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...A cold front has brought gusty northwest through
northeast winds to the region this evening.  These winds will gust
to 25-35 knots 40 knots possible. Strongest winds are expected down
the Colorado River Valley behind the front tonight into tomorrow
with gusts up to 50 knots possible. Strong winds will hold on
through tomorrow afternoon when a downward trend is expected to
begin going into tomorrow evening. Blowing dust could restrict
visibilities down to 5-6 miles during periods of strongest winds.
The front is mostly dry with only some clouds coming down to around
10k feet but a scattered shower will be possible over northern
Mohave County this evening.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
400 PM PDT Sun Oct 25 2020

.AFTERNOON UPDATE...
Made some more detailed edits to the wind/gust grids through
tomorrow night, mainly for the Colorado River Valley. GFSLamp now
advertising 61G70kt at one point for tomorrow. This is above even
the highest ensemble members in the 12Z ECM. MET/NBM guidance are
quite a bit lower. However, 12Z HREF would favor more in line with
the higher end of that envelope. Coordinated with PSR on the
possibility for a need for an HWW for the Colorado River Valley but
decided to hold off with competing outcomes in the models as they
are. Did increase wording for the advisory to mention gusts up to 60
mph and will make a short-fuse call on this if trends continue to
increase. Otherwise, all products are updated and issued as
intended.

The cold front is beginning to push through the northern Valley at
the moment as well. Seeing observations eclipsing 40 mph already at
KVGT and over 50mph at the test site. More winds to come!

.SHORT TERM...Today through Monday.
High confidence continues for a cold front to push through the
Desert Southwest and bring with it drastic (more fall-like) changes.
Additionally, confidence continues to improve regarding some of the
finer details such as wind speeds, exact temperatures and rain/snow
chances.

Through the morning hours, short term model trends continue to
advertise stronger wind potential, both in the pre-frontal and post-
frontal regime. This added some significant complications to the NPW
timing to match up with the strongest winds (i.e. Mohave County).
The front is pushing along as expected from a timing perspective,
but latest hi-res trends have been increasing to the point that high
elevations of Inyo, Nye, Lincoln are all looking more likely to see
gusts over 40 mph. Additionally, winds in our typical hot spot
locations where topographic enhancement is most prevalent (KIFP,
KLSV, Olancha, etc) have ticked up as well through Monday. So much
so that some of these areas, namely the Colorado River and southern
Owens Valley, may be flirting with High Wind Warning criteria. It is
worth noting that a similar pattern earlier in the season warranted
wind gusts of up to 66 mph in some of these locations. HREF ensemble
mean values are hinting that this is possibility again. At this time
have not upgraded these locations, but may need to by this afternoon
or this evening. Would like to see if forecast winds are on track or
if observed winds are trending above forecast. If so, a short fuse
upgrade may be needed.

Precip wise, prospects are looking less and less likely. While still
non-zero for the dry streak to end for the places that have the
longest stretches, they are rapidly approaching zero. Some very thin
moisture exists above 700 mb but the bad news is the low level
profile is showing a wide inverted V sounding. As a result, any
precip that does develop likely won't reach the ground and instead
serve to further amplify gust potential. So more and more trends are
looking to be largely wind and fire weather related.

Impacts from this system should begin to wane substantially after
9PM tomorrow night, with only remnant wind gusts possible for the
KIFP/KHII/KEED areas. This may require an extension of the current
RFW through part of Tuesday but not enough confidence at the moment
to go ahead and do this today.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday.
As the low pressure center moves slowly east across Arizona and
New Mexico Tuesday, north winds will be somewhat lighter, although
still a bit breezy, across our area. The strongest gusts of 25 to
30 mph are likely to be in the Colorado River Valley. High
pressure then noses in from the eastern Pacific and sets up over
the Desert Southwest for the rest of the period. As a result,
winds will be light, skies will be clear aside from periods of
high clouds passing by, and temperatures will climb back to near
and then slightly above late October normals as the week goes on.

and will last through Monday evening...maybe even Tuesday morning
for the Colorado River Valley. Fire Weather Watches across the area
have been upgraded to Red Flag Warnings. RH values will hover around
criteria or even slightly above, though without the originally
anticipated wetting rains, RH values will plummet Monday to the
critical single-digits. Afternoon RH values will remain critical
through the remainder of the forecast period, but winds will relax
Wednesday onward.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...After being delayed by a couple of
hours, the winds have begun to shift to the northwest this afternoon
and will soon increase to around 15 knots gusting 20-25 knots. A
further increase in speeds is expected this evening into tomorrow
morning with gusts up to 30-35 knots. A few clouds at 10k feet or
above will be possible as the frontal boundary passes. On Monday,
winds will shift more north northeasterly up to around 25 knots
gusting around 35 knots under clear skies. Periods of blowing dust
will be possible with stronger winds but isn't expected to restrict
vsbys enough to impact operations at the terminal.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...A cold front will move through the area this afternoon
and evening with strong southwesterly winds out ahead of it shifting
the the north as the boundary passes. These winds will have gusts to
25-35 knots on either side of the front with isolated gusts up to 40
knots possible. Strongest winds are expected down the Colorado River
Valley behind the front tonight into tomorrow with gusts up to 50
knots possible. Strong winds will hold on through tomorrow afternoon
when a downward trend is expected to begin going into tomorrow
evening. Blowing dust could restrict visibilities down to 5-6 miles
during periods of strongest winds. The front is mostly dry with only
some clouds coming down to around 10k feet but a scattered shower
will be possible over northern Mohave County this evening.
