Issued at 914 AM MST Thu Jan 30 2020

16z surface analysis had elongated low pressure from northeast MT
into northwest SD. Cold front draped across central MT into
north central WY. Water vapour loop had fast moving shortwave
across central MT into central WY. Regional radar loop showed
forcing ahead of shortwave underpinning snow falling across
northeast WY into far western SD. This system main concern this
morning.

System quickly moves east/southeast today as low pressure
consolidates over central SD swinging fast moving cold front
through the CWA with 3-5mb/3hr pressure rises. 850-700mb
frontogenesis under synoptic lift will push band of precipitation
across the CWA. Precipitation type will be mixed on the SD
plains. Best snow accumulations will be over the northern/Wyoming
Black Hills given upslope and sustained burst of moderate/heavy
snow late this morning through mid-afternoon per Froude numbers
and high resolution guidance. Moisture cutoff is swift - upslope
will quickly end late this afternoon. Bufkit momentum transfer
supports gusts to 50kts from K2WX to KRAP mid-afternoon through
early this evening, which will helped by convective nature of
radar returns given steep low level lapse rates.

Current winter headlines look good. Will hoist high wind warning
for the K2WX to KRAP corridor. Could be some lowered visibilities
at times on the plains where snow occurs, but accumulations look
minimal at this point.

.DISCUSSION...(Today Through Wednesday)
Issued at 146 AM MST Thu Jan 30 2020

Active westerly flow will persist through the weekend before
another round of modified arctic air shifts south into the
northern CONUS. Vigorous shortwave pushing into the Northern
Plains this morning, which will bring a plethora of weather conds
to the region today. Front side forcing will support a band of
mostly snow into the region per positive FGEN. Warm ll temps will
support a mix of rain or all rain over portions of the SD plains
today, with all snow expected from the Black Hills west. Strong
forcing, steep lapse rates, and strong upslope flow will support a
period of moderate to heavy snow in the northern Black Hills, esp
this afternoon. 3-5 inches of snow are expected there with
locally around 6 possible in the favored NW flow upslope areas in
the higher terrain. Otherwise, snow amounts are expected to be 1-2
inches or less across NE WY, with much less amounts on the SD
plains. Snowfall will also be fighting warm ll temps given the
bulk of precip falling in the late morning and afternoon in peak
heating, hence held off on any winter weather headlines outside of
the Black Hills, although some patchy blowing snow will be
possible, particularly in NE WY. The other main impact from this
storm will be strong gusty winds with behind the sfc trough, which
will time in the afternoon. Wind gusts over 50 mph will be
possible on the northwest SD plains this afternoon into the
evening. Steep lapse rates behind the main band of snow will
support downward momentum transfer with convective snow showers
also enhancing any ll wind transfer. Given these concerns have
issued a wind adv for the NW SD plains. Precip will quickly exit
the region late this afternoon/early evening with breezy winds
lingering into the late evening. WAA will ensue later tonight with
SW winds increasing over NE WY. Shortwave ridging and WAA will
persist into Sat, with very mild temps Friday and esp Sat. Highs
Friday will reach the 40s most places with some 50s in the lee of
the Black Hills. Sat will see even warmer temps as the thermal
ridge will time over the area with breezy westerly winds. This
will allow many places to mix down some of the warm air aloft, esp
in the lee of the Black Hills where a rotor wave will be in
place, supporting temps possibly in the 70s in the eastern
foothills, possibly setting/tying records. Cold front will then
settle in the region Sunday with highs Sunday hinging on the speed
of the front which deterministic models differ on extensively.
Snow is then expected Sunday night into Monday, esp over the
western third where upslope flow will enhance forcing, supporting
1-4 inches from the Black Hills west. Colder temps expected
through mid next week, with a warming trend after.

A cold front will cross the area today, bringing gusty NW winds
and rain/snow. Conditions will deteriorate to MVFR/IFR through the
day, especially the afternoon. The band of snow will shift
eastward throughout the day, spreading into western SD. Conditions
will improve from west to east late this afternoon and evening,
with VFR conditions expected overnight tonight.
