CONCERNING TAF SITES KTUL/KRVS/KBVO/KMLC/KXNA/KFYV/KFSM/KROG.
Snow, at times moderate to heavy, will overspread the NE OK
terminals tomorrow morning and far NW AR terminals during the
afternoon, with prolonged periods of both IFR ceilings and
visibilities. MLC/FSM will see IFR conditions as well, but rain is
the most likely persistent precipitation type, with a brief window
for a rain/snow mix and/or total changeover to snow before the
precipitation ends tomorrow evening. Expect visibilities under a
mile in snow for a prolonged period at all terminals except MLC
and FSM. Conditions will improve from west to east, with VFR
conditions arriving mid evening tomorrow at the NE OK terminals.

DISCUSSION...
An impressive PV max is spinning over the Four Corners this
evening, and is headed for the southern Plains on Sunday.
Precipitaiton will overspread the region very late tonight into
Sunday morning, across northern Oklahoma first, where it will be
primarily snow, and then across southern Oklahoma. Rain will
quickly transition to snow across northeast Oklahoma as the warm
and dry layer between H85 and H7 is demolished by wet bulb
cooling as strong and sustained lift occurs in the DGZ. The rain
snow line will advance to the east and southeast thru the day. The
latest short term guidance indicates that a band of heavier
precip will become focused from east central Oklahoma into
northwest Arkansas from mid morning on into the afternoon, with
precip changing over to snow, thus some potential for heavier
accumulations. Surface temps still look to remain just above
freezing across much of the region, except to the north and west
of Tulsa. In the heavier snow bands, snow will likely fall heavy
enough to create at least slushy road conditions for a time.
Temperatures closer to freezing in the terrain suggest less
melting potential and snow packed roads are possible. With
increased potential for accumulations greater than 4 inches over
NW AR, have decided to go with a winter storm watch. The advisory
was also expanded south to Frankin and Crawford counties to cover
the terrain across the northern portions of those counties. The
headlines in NW AR were extended to 06Z tomorrow evening due to
some potential for accumulation after 00Z.

The main aviation concern through tomorrow afternoon is IFR
conditions likely to overspread the area tomorrow morning as first
rain and then a transition to snow, sometimes moderate to heavy,
occurs. The NE OK and far NW AR terminals should be more greatly
affected, with visibilities likely to be under a mile for a
prolonged period of time. The transition to snow at MLC should
occur in the afternoon and will not include any transition at FSM
prior to 00Z, although it could be very close. At the early
portion of the TAF period, BVO and FSM, which are currently
seeing MVFR ceilings, should improve to VFR within the first
couple of hours of the period. However, it is likely that the far
NW AR terminals will remain restricted through the period.

DISCUSSION...
Low clouds associated with the backside of an upper low lifting
into the Great Lakes region continued this afternoon across much
of Eastern Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas. This has held temps in
check with upper 30s/low 40s under the cloud cover to the upper
40s along the Red River. This cloud cover looks to lift northeast
slightly before additional cloud cover spreads into the region
overnight tonight as the much anticipated low pressure
system...currently dropping southeast into the Four Corners
region...begins to push into the Southern Plains. In
response...low temps tonight look to slowly fall across Northeast
Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas while temps over Southeast
Oklahoma fall through the late evening hours and then
stall/slightly warm with the increasing cloud cover.
The track of the 700-mb/500-mb low is progged to push into
Northern Texas during the morning hours Sunday and then move
eastward across Northern Texas Sunday afternoon before lifting
east northeast into Eastern Arkansas Sunday night. This track
will allow for rain chances to become possible across parts of
Southeast Oklahoma late tonight...with rain mixing with
snow/sleet possible north of the 700-mb/500-mb closed low centers
across Northeast Oklahoma.
During the day Sunday...surface temps are expected to not change
all that much and remain near to slightly above freezing across
most of the CWA. At the same time...temp profiles aloft are cold
enough for a transition from rain/sleet/snow to mainly snow from
west to east across Northeast Oklahoma Sunday morning to far
Northwest Arkansas early Sunday afternoon. Across Southeast
Oklahoma...the transition to a wintry mix is expected during the
mid/late afternoon. Over the Arkansas River Valley of West Central
Arkansas...temps suggest that this area looks to be the last to
transition over with a light rain/snow mix possible late
afternoon/evening for the Fort Smith area. Precipitation looks to
taper off west to east starting late afternoon and should exit
Northwest Arkansas by late Sunday evening as the low pressure
system pulls away from the CWA.
In response to the mentioned above...snowfall accumulations in
the 1 to 3 inch range are forecast across much of Northeast
Oklahoma and far Northwest Arkansas. The greater potential for
these amounts and locally higher look to be west of Highway 75 in
Northeast Oklahoma through early afternoon and within the higher
terrain of far Northwest Arkansas Sunday afternoon/evening. There
is a potential for a moderate to heavy snow band to set up that
tries to connect these two locations with a small west to east
band of amounts of 2-3 inches. Where this band sets up is still
uncertain though at this time from Okfuskee co to Adair co looks
to be possible. A winter weather advisory is already in effect
from 6am to 6pm Sunday for these locations and will thus let the
advisory ride as is for now. South of Interstate 40...trace
amounts to less than an inch of snowfall will be possible. The
exception to this looks to be within the higher terrain of far
Southern Le Flore co where locally over one inch could be
possible.
Behind the departing low and exiting precip...skies are forecast
to clear out which will allow for freezing temperatures to spread
over the CWA Sunday night. With surface temps above freezing
during the day...melting of snowfall is expected through the day.
This melting could refreeze overnight with the falling temps which
could create some slick spots on roadways...especially bridges and
overpasses for the Monday morning commute. Cool conditions are
expected to continue Monday with temps in the upper 30s to upper
40s from north to south.
A second low pressure system is progged to push across the
Southern/Central Plains Tuesday which will return the chance for
rain and also snow again across the CWA. At this time...the
greater snow fall potential looks to be across Northeast
Oklahoma...though this will continue to be refined as the track
and expected surface temps become more certain. Behind this second
system...drier conditions and temperatures getting back into the
50s will be possible by the end of the upcoming work week. A third
wave looks to possible affect the region over the weekend...though
for now have kept conditions dry.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION...
Widespread light to moderate snow will overspread much of
eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas Sunday through Sunday
evening. A corridor of moderate to heavy snow is likely to
develop from mid morning through Sunday afternoon, though the exact
location of the heavier snow remains uncertain. Temperatures are
likely to remain near or slightly above freezing where snow does
fall, and will be a limiting factor for accumulation. However,
snowfall intensity will be heavy enough at times to allow for
accumulation on grassy and elevated surfaces in the 1 to 4 inch
range with locally heavier amounts across northeast Oklahoma and
northwest Arkansas. Accumulation of snow on roads and bridges is
expected, especially in the heavier snow bands. Slick spots due to
slushy road conditions will impact travel, especially north of
Interstate 40. The high terrain areas of southeast Oklahoma could be
impacted as well.
Wet roadways and bridges from the melting snow are likely to freeze
as temperatures drop well below freezing Sunday night into Monday.
Thus, travel impacts are expected to linger into the morning commute
on Monday.
Another storm system is expected to bring the potential for more
snow accumulation across northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas
on Tuesday and could impact travel north of Interstate 40.
