Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Topeka KS 1145 AM CST Tue Dec 22 2020 ...Update to aviation forecast discussion... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 343 AM CST Tue Dec 22 2020 Across the CONUS at 10Z, an eastern trough continues to lift through the New England states. Meanwhile and broad ridge has been building over the Plains states. The next trough that will impact the region is now over the Pacific northwest and will continue to advance east today. This upper trough will impact the area mainly by early Wednesday morning as a cold front sharpens across the area and quickly advances east bringing little in opportunity for precipitation over the forecast area. Any precipitation along the initial cold front would be light rain most likely or perhaps some drizzle with limited saturation depth. The biggest impacts will be in the form of wind with this system over the local area. As flow over the Rockies continues to increase today ahead of the Pacific trough, southerly flow and WAA will increase strongly by noon into the afternoon hours. As a result have issued a wind advisory over much of central into east central Kansas with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph expected with gusts up to around 45 mph at times. Eventhough mixing today doesn't appear to be all that deep at around 900mb, the low level winds appear strong enough to give concern to impactful winds especially for high profile vehicles and travelers both east and west bound. This wind will last well into the overnight period before relaxing as the upper trough starts to slow as it moves into the upper MS Valley region. Wednesday morning and afternoon will see the winds pick back up with intense wind and CAA rushing over the Plains. The deformation zone with this system appears to be focused north of the area with much better agreement in 00Z deterministic model solutions which is typical with better sampling of the Pacific system. Could need another wind advisory on Wednesday as well. Colder temperatures work into the area and fall through the day with Thursday feeling more like a freezer with highs in the 20s and 30s. The progressive pattern still looks like it holds into Christmas Day and Saturday though with heights rising and temperatures reaching possibly into the 50s believe it or not. Maintaining a dry forecast through the weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 1145 AM CST Tue Dec 22 2020 VFR conditions are expected. Winds and wind shear are the main challenge with very strong winds over the low few thousand feet developing in the 0Z-6Z window. Have only made minor alterations to the forecast as expect some notable gusts to continue through the bulk of the nocturnal period with winds aloft enough to keep a wind shear inclusion. Cold front passes around 12Z with additional strong winds from the northwest dominating the end of the forecast. Some signals for a broken MVFR deck developing ahead of the front persist but have stayed with the bulk of the guidance and kept this out. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 343 AM CST Tue Dec 22 2020 Fire weather concerns are tricky today and wouldn't rule out a short- fuse red flag warning could be possible. Currently only mentioning very high fire danger across central into east central Kansas due to higher dewpoints and shallow mixing. This should act to keep MinRH levels into the low 30s. But, with a very strong south wind, any fire would likely spread and quickly become a concern. Currently, per Kansas mesonet sites, 1 hr fuels are not below 15 which would favor more efficient burning fuels. Just mentioning the wind advisory for now. Wednesday will likely once again give rise to high or very high fire danger as winds change to the northwest and could gust higher as low level winds appear slightly stronger aloft and mixing depths could be higher. Will have to determine if any fire headlines are possible through today with a drier airmass moving in.
