Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Topeka KS 1257 PM CDT Wed Oct 21 2020 ...Update to aviation forecast discussion... .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 354 AM CDT Wed Oct 21 2020 Early this morning surface high pressure extended into southern Kansas while a frontal boundary was stalled over Oklahoma. VAD wind profiles show southwesterly flow at 850 MB over the boundary resulting in moderate isentropic lift into southeast and parts of east central Kansas. This has kept scattered showers with a few rumbles of thunder going early this morning. Water vapor satellite was showing a mid level wave and associated speed max was moving eastward across into Wyoming. High clouds have thinned and with the calm winds patchy fog has developed. For today additional mid level energy moves out of the Rockies allowing the 925-850mb winds to become southerly this morning with moisture advecting northward. Forecast soundings saturate in the low level and with the low level isentropic omega in the low levels areas of drizzle are expected to develop through the morning hours and continue into the afternoon. The frontal boundary is forecast to inch northward into areas southeast of I-35 by early evening as a warm front. Have lowered forecast highs today with most areas in the low to upper 50s for highs. Tonight, the frontal boundary will move northward overnight reaching the Nebraska border by 12Z Thursday in response to a mid level trough moving into the northern Rockies. Mass response will send the boundary northward and increase moisture transport into central and eastern Kansas. Increasing low level jet tonight will lead to increasing isentropic omega over the frontal boundary for showers and thunderstorms to develop across the area during the evening and overnight hours shifting northward into Nebraska by sunrise Thursday. Temperatures will be coolest in the evening then warm through the night. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 353 AM CDT Wed Oct 21 2020 Thursday, winds will increase as the surface pressure gradient increases and momentum transfer from the low level jet occurs. Winds will average around 25 mph with gusts to around 40 mph expected, especially from mid morning into the late afternoon hours. The approach of the mid level trough will send a cold front southeastward into north central Kansas in the late afternoon hours then continue southeast of the area Thursday night. Forecast soundings show an EML will remain in place for much of the day as forecast highs reach the mid 70s to mid 80s ahead of the front. Models are consistent with the developing of convection near and behind the frontal boundary during the evening and overnight hours. About 500-1000 J/kg of mucape is forecast along and behind the boundary with about 40 to 45 kts of shear. An isolated severe storm capable of quarter size hail will be possible Thursday evening. Cold air will usher in behind the front with highs on Friday back into the 40s. In addition, Friday night into early Saturday morning widespread frost will be possible along with temperatures near or below freezing. Another system moving into the Plains on Sunday will bring another chance of rain to the area with a rain and snow mix Sunday night. Model differences early next week lead to a lower confidence forecast for precipitation, but much below temperatures will continue. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon) Issued at 1255 PM CDT Wed Oct 21 2020 Current MVFR to IFR ceilings will gradually lower over the afternoon and evening, with fog developing as well, particularly after sunset. The fog could be locally dense during the late evening and early portions of the overnight hours, with possible LIFR ceilings and visibilities. Light east winds will veer to the southeast and then the south overnight as the warm front lifts north. This should clear out the fog and lower ceilings a couple hours before sunrise, though the quickly increasing LLJ should lead to LLWS developing overnight.
