.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Midlevel shortwave trough is rotating south over the Panhandles this
morning along the eastern edge of the high pressure axis stretching
through the Inter-Mountain west region. Mid level clouds associated
with the showers and thunderstorms across OK are drifting across
central Kansas this morning, while the stationary front hovers
across central to east central Kansas. Isolated showers may develop
in the next few hours within the weak convergence along the front,
however these should dissipate after sunrise. Despite the high
clouds insulating the sfc some, recent rains combined with light
winds result in patchy fog and low stratus this early morning. The
probability for widespread dense fog is low given the clouds in
place, but cannot rule out low lying areas seeing visibilities
around a mile.

For today, upper ridge axis shifts into the northern plains,
allowing a southerly embedded trough to enter western Kansas by the
evening. Isentropic lift increases in the afternoon over southern
Kansas as ongoing scattered showers and storms lift northward into
the area by late afternoon. Given the weak shear environment, severe
storms are not expected. Main hazard would be locally heavy rainfall
with overall rainfall amounts being less than an inch. Temps today
remain on the cooler side with readings in the low to middle 80s.

Several clusters of storms are likely to develop in the region this
evening as the shortwave trough interacts with the sfc low and/or
MCV in Oklahoma. Most guidance centers the heaviest rainfall south
of the CWA while scattered showers and storms may redevelop and
rotate north and east overnight as the vort max approaches.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Heavy rainfall potential increases by Wednesday as the
aforementioned slow moving system enters northeast Kansas. Maximum
lift combined with anomalously high PWAT values and moisture may
result in periods of heavy rainfall in the morning and afternoon.
There is a brief period of stable air before another upper vort max
drops southward into the area on Thursday, initiating another round
of widespread showers and storms in the afternoon and evening. Model
placement of higher QPF values and timing of these waves are still
in question, however there is a correlation between guidance of
highest rainfall totals focusing along and south of Interstate 70
where a widespread 1-2 inches of rainfall are possible through
Friday morning. Localized flash flooding and river flooding
possibilities will be highest between Wednesday and Thursday evening.
The upper trough slowly exits east Friday as the upper ridge
attempts to shunt incoming waves to the east by the weekend,
returning dry conditions to the area. Due to the rainfall
probabilities and persistent cloud cover, temps are well below
normal with highs in the low 80s and overnight lows in the 60s.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning)

LIFR stratus and shallow fog to impact KTOP/KFOE/KMHK early this
morning with highest impacts at KMHK. Cigs gradually scatter and
lift to VFR by 17Z as light northeast winds veer to the southeast
in the afternoon below 10 kts. Added a VCSH mention as pop up
showers develop south of terminals in the late afternoon. There is
a slight chance for lightning, however confidence is low in
carrying VCTS for a prolonged period.

along and south of Interstate 70. Locally heavy rainfall is
possible.

Minor to moderate river flooding continues along creeks and rivers
across portions of north central Kansas.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Chances for showers and thunderstorms persist through Friday
evening, increasing the concern for localized flash flooding and
expanded river flooding for the entire outlook area. Best chances
for widespread rainfall are currently on Wednesday and Thursday.
