High pressure will keep the area dry, with mild temperatures into
Friday. However, a strong spring snow storm will bring widespread
snow, gusty northerly winds, and much colder temperatures to the
region Friday night through Saturday night. Snow ends by Sunday,
but unseasonably cold temperatures remain into next week.

Main update this morning, which was pretty minor, was to bump up
temperatures several degrees. Temperatures have been warming
quickly this morning, especially in areas that were not shield
by the early morning cirrus deck. Otherwise, the on-going forecast
for today and tonight remains on track and no other updates were
necessary. Focus this afternoon will be on the incoming winter
storm, which bring widespread impacts to the Northern Rockies from

VFR conditions are expected for much of the 0918/1018 TAF period;
however, some near-MVFR CIGS are possible across extreme Southwest
Montana Friday morning near the KWYS terminal. Scattered high clouds
will also be seen across the region over the next 18 hours, with the
greatest coverage across Central and North Central Montana. A cold
will then begin to advance south across the International Border
between 09-15z Friday, bringing a wind shift to the northwest/north
at the KCTB and KHVR terminals, in addition to increasing mid- to
low level cloudiness. Mountain passes will start to become obscured

High pressure will maintain fair and mild conditions today and
tonight. High clouds will stream through the upstream ridge and
across our region at times.

The pattern changes quickly during the day on Friday, as a strong
upper level trough advances south along the Canadian Rockies, and
the Pacific ridge shifts further west to set up a colder
northerly flow into our region. Overall confidence remains high
regarding this return to winter weather, having seen only subtle
changes from previous forecasts. The initial surface cold front is
expected to move into North-central Montana sometime Friday
morning, causing a shift to northerly winds and beginning to lower
temperatures. Central and Southwest Montana will remain mild
through most of Friday. Scattered rain showers over plains during
the afternoon will mix with snow for a short period late in the
afternoon, before changing over to all snow through Friday
evening. Similar conditions will spread into portions of southwest
Montana overnight as the low pressure trough moves into Montana
and pushes the cold front south through the state. Temperatures will
also fall rapidly to near or below freezing Friday night through
Saturday over the plains, which may cause a flash-freeze situation
on some roadways along with continuing snowfall.

Widespread snow continues through Saturday. The heaviest snowfall
amounts will likely be in the mountains of north central and
central Montana (mostly 8 to 12 inches, but possibly up to 16
inches on some peaks) and in upslope-favored north- and east-
facing slopes on the plains (5 to 8 inches possible). This
snowfall will also be enhanced by a jet streak moving through
these areas in the westerly flow aloft and providing some added
lift to the system. The breezy northerly winds will also persist
into Saturday, and the resulting blowing snow will likely cause
additionally reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions.

Snow will decrease and gradually end from north to south Saturday
night into Sunday morning as the upper level trough moves away to
the east. A strong continental polar airmass deepens over the
region under that persistent northerly flow aloft. Temperatures
will fall well below normal for this time of year, possibly
setting new calendar day cold records at some locations. These

Monday through next Wednesday...The low pressure trough will
spread east across the United States during this time, leaving
the forecast area under a cool but gradually warming northerly
flow aloft. Disturbances in the flow will keep the main chance
for additional light snow in the mountains. Highs on Monday in
the mid 20s to mid 30s will warm into the mid 30s to mid 40s by
Wednesday, and lows will be slower to warm, staying mostly in the
