Area forecast discussion, Feb 5, 3:46 AM MST, 1 minute before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 346 AM MST Wed Feb 5 2020 .SYNOPSIS... Snow will redevelop over the southern and western Montana today, and spreading into parts of central montana by this afternoon. Expect the snow to continue over these regions Thursday into Friday morning. A second storm system will affect the region this weekend, with another round of snow and colder temperatures. && .DISCUSSION... A fairly strong upper level disturbance moves southward into the region today, along with moist northwesterly flow, bringing widespread snow to parts of Southwest and Central Montana today through friday morning. The heaviest snow amounts will occur over the southwest Mountains, causing difficult travel into winter recreation areas and increasing avalanche potential. There is slightly better confidence overall, however, there remains some uncertainty in storm total snow accumulations in the Southwest valleys, particularly with regard to snow levels and valley temperatures. The Winter Storm Watches have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for Gallatin County, and Winter Weather Advisories for the remaining southwest and central counties. -TP Saturday through Tuesday...A second storm system is progged to move through the region on Saturday and exit the area on Sunday. Snow amounts of several inches look possible with this system. Additionally, some convective snowfall is possible with the second system, resulting in some high snowfall rates. Winter weather highlights will likely be needed for portions of the region for this event as well. Monday looks to be mostly dry, with increasing chances for snow again by next Tuesday. Overall NBM guidance looked a bit on the warm side, so afternoon temperatures were adjusted down a few degrees from Sunday through Tuesday. && .AVIATION... Updated 1055 PM MST Tue Feb 4 2020 (05/06Z TAF Period) A disturbance moving southeast through central and southwest Montana (including terminals from KGTF and KLWT south) will continue the MVFR/IFR conditions in light to moderate snow showers with mountain obscuration; conditions there will gradually improve to VFR from the north with partially clearing skies through 13Z. The Hi-Line (including KCTB and KHVR) will remain VFR with mostly clear skies. However, westerly winds along the Rocky Mountain Front will continue to be strong with gusts exceeding 35 kt through at least 12Z. Increasing Pacific moisture in the northwest flow aloft will bring increasing clouds with mountain-obscuring snow once again after 18Z, as well as MVFR/IFR conditions in the southwest valleys.
