The next round of mountain snow will develop along the Continental
Divide and spread through the Southwest Montana ranges late tonight
through Thursday. Temperatures trend warmer at lower elevations with
increasing southwest winds. An active weather pattern continues
through the weekend, periods of mountain snow and mild, but very
windy conditions persisting Friday through Sunday.

The evening update has been published. Next shortwave to impact our
region is currently moving onto the Pacific Northwest coast.
This system is still expected to bring snow along the Divide and
over portions of the southwest later tonight into Thursday.
Surface winds increase over the plains by Thursday morning and
continue to be gusty through the evening. Not much change was needed
but did freshen the forecast with the latest model guidance. No
changes were made to the winter highlights and high wind products.

increasing winds over the plains, with snow along the Rocky Mountain
Front. Snow develops in Southwest MT on Thursday morning, generally
impacting the Bozeman/Ennis area. Some IFR conditions are expected
with areas of low clouds. Mountains/passes will be obscured at times

/ISSUED 455 PM MST Wed Dec 16 2020/

Satellite imagery reveals a brief lull between weather systems
late this afternoon, with a mix of clear skies, lower clouds over
mountain areas, and a high level Chinook arch developing off the
Continental Divide. Upstream moisture will begin to produce the
next round of snow over the Northern Rockies late tonight, and
continue through much of the day tomorrow. Although snowfall
amounts will not be especially heavy at pass level, blowing snow
in stronger winds could create travel difficulties along the Rocky
Mountain Front up to Marias Pass. A new winter weather advisory
has been posted to address this hazard. Mid level winds strengthen
on Thursday, with gusts to around 55 mph possible for wind prone
areas across North-central Montana Thursday afternoon. The upper
level trough is somewhat fractured, with another center of
circulation moving through the interior west. Expect snow to
develop and spread across Southwest Montana late tonight through
Thursday. Impacts from snowfall will be relatively minor, and
confined to elevations above about 6000 feet including the West
Yellowstone area. A few snow, or possibly rain showers may spread
across the lower southwest valleys through mid-day Thursday.
Overall winds and precipitation decline in coverage and intensity
later Thursday night into early Friday.  PN

Friday through next Tuesday...

Ridging dominates the overhead weather pattern on Friday. Expect
a mild day in terms of temperatures and moisture. With a trof
located over The Canadian Hudson Bay, and another trof upstream
and high pressure dominant off of the west coast of California, a
strong zonal flow sets-up across The Great Divide, and winds
begin to gust Friday afternoon. Expect strong westerly gusty winds
to become widespread throughout the weekend, with generally gusty
winds continuing through Tuesday. Perturbations in the flow aloft
favor mountain showers that will begin Saturday, increase in
areal coverage across southwest Montana on Sunday, and become more
widespread northward into central Montana on Monday and Tuesday.

Next Wednesday...

Numerical model solutions are quite divergent at the end of this
forecast period; however, at this time, it looks like we will see
a dry day with cooler highs ranging in the 30s, and gradually
decreasing winds.
