...UPDATED AVIATION DISCUSSION...

.UPDATE...

Radar echos are blossoming over western portions of North-central
Montana this evening. However, surface observations indicate cloud
bases remain above about 7000 feet, with no reason yet to suspect
precipitation is reaching the ground. Breezy southwesterly
downslope winds will continue to suppress precipitation at low
levels beneath these thickening mid-level clouds. Wind gusts along
the Rocky Mountain Front have exceeded 50 mph, but the magnitude
of the pressure gradient appears to be starting to weaken as the
Alberta surface low begins to pull away to the east. Short term
models do continue to support light precipitation for a few hours
overnight as the fast moving upper level trough crosses the
Rockies and moves into eastern Montana Thursday morning. Little
more than a trace of snow is expected a lower elevations. However,
the southwestern Mountains, especially the Bridger range could
collect 2 to 6 inches of new snow in the favorable northwesterly
flow. Minor updates were posted to the forecast to better capture
observed trends.

.SYNOPSIS...

Partly to mostly sunny skies will yield to increasing clouds
tonight as a quick-moving weather system pushes into the state.
Rain and mainly mountain snow will push into western Montana early
this evening, then spread into central and eastern parts of the
state late this evening and overnight. A quick clearing is then
expected on Thursday, with gusty winds then expected to develop
along and east of the Divide Friday into Saturday, along with very
warm temperatures.

Updated 11 PM MST Wed Jan 29 2020 (30/06Z TAF Period)

An upper level disturbance will bring some rain and snow showers
through tonight to some sites, while the remainder of the area
sees VFR conditions. Best chance for showers and MVFR to brief IFR
conditons will come along and east of a line from KHVR to KGTF to
KEKS to KWYS, including KBZN and KLWT. Areas west of this line
may see some clouds at times, with generally VFR conditions.
Precipitation then ends from central to east Thursday morning. The
remainder of Thursday through Thursday night should see generally
VFR conditions with some breezy winds at times. Mountains may
become obscured at times through Thursday morning. Increasing low
level winds may also bring some LLWS Thursday night. Anglin

.FIRE WEATHER...
Increased grassland fire weather danger is possible to end the
week. Strong winds may found as early as Friday, with the
strongest winds expected Friday night through Saturday. Saturday
will see a poor start to morning RH for this time of year,
followed by low afternoon RH values in the 20s. This combined with
widespread strong winds, and temperatures in the 60s, could bring
at least elevated grassland fire weather danger in areas without
recent snow cover. Anyone with planned burns should consider
alternating their plans. All should be mindful of any errant
sparks that may ignite dry grassy fuels. There already have been
a few small fires reported Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tonight through Thursday Night...Tonight into Thursday morning
will see a clipper type system move across the region. This may
bring scattered snow showers, with some rain initially, at times
to much of the area. Building ridge should diminish the snow late
Thursday morning or early Thursday evening. Snowfall accumulations
are possible with this disturbance with generally 1 to 4 inches
in the central and southwest, and less than an inch elsewhere. The
morning commute may be impacted, although at the moment not
widespread enough for any winter weather products. There is also a
chance as precip diminishes and dry air aloft moves in, some
freezing drizzle/rain is possible. Some light amounts of freezing
drizzle were introduced along the Divide north of MacDonald Pass.
Dry air under ridging then takes over for the remainder of
Thursday bringing dry and breezy conditions. -Kredensor/Anglin

Friday through Saturday...We then enter the start of a very
strong westerly flow. There is a little bit of moisture in this
flow that could perhaps bring some mountain showers, and scattered
lower elevation showers through the day Friday. The attention
also turns to the potential for increasing winds. Overall Saturday
will still be the day to monitor, however, winds may begin to
increase along the Rocky Mountain Front Friday afternoon, then
spreading eastward Friday night into Saturday. A High Wind Watch
remains in effect for the whole of the Rocky Mtn Front and north-
central Plains later Thursday into Friday. Models still indicate
the strongest of these winds will occur on Saturday. If these
strong winds can mix down widespread 60+ MPH will be easily found.
The uncertainty comes in timing of a cold front in the extended
period, which could cut-off the high winds earlier than currently
expected. Temperatures will also continue to warm on Friday
through Saturday, bringing widespread 40s and 50s to the area
Friday and up to mid 60s Saturday. Some record highs are possible
on Saturday. With dry and breezy winds, increase grassland fire
danger is certainly possible Friday and especially Saturday.

Saturday night through Wednesday...The extended forecast then
looks to see another pattern shift to more cool with periods of
snow. Uncertainty remains on the timing of a passing cold front.
Right now indications are sometime Saturday night or Sunday
morning a cold front will push from north to south. This will
bring cooling temperatures and the next best chance for widespread
accumulating snow. This snow could then linger into Monday, with
temperatures becoming below normal for the first time in a couple
weeks. Widespread snow looks to diminish Monday night. Tuesday
through Wednesday then look to see warming back to near normal
temperatures with perhaps some mountain snow at times. Uncertainty
still remains with timing and snowfall accumulations during this

...A WINTRY MIX OF PRECIPITATION WILL AFFECT MUCH OF NORTH CENTRAL
AND SOUTHWEST MONTANA AT LEAST THROUGH MIDNIGHT...

At 955 PM MST, the leading edge of an area of mixed precipitation
was located along a line extending from near Turner to near West
Yellowstone. The back edge was along a line from near Shelby to near
Monida Pass. Movement was east at 30 mph.

This precipitation is mostly snow in the mountains and mostly rain
at lower elevations, but rain has been changing over to snow fairly
quickly. Also, some areas along the leading edge of the
precipitation are already below freezing, so there may be brief
periods of freezing drizzle there before becoming more of a mix of
rain and snow.

Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Be
prepared for snow or ice covered roads. Slow down and allow extra
time when traveling.
