EVENING...

* WHAT...Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph,
  are occurring.

* WHERE...Eastern Teton, Judith Basin, Eastern Pondera, Liberty, 
  Toole, Cascade and Central and Southern Lewis and Clark.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM MST this evening.

* IMPACTS...Strong winds could blow down trees and power lines. 
  Some power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, 
  especially for high profile vehicles and those pulling 
  trailers.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds will remain strong through the

.SYNOPSIS...

Dry and windy conditions continue today through Thursday.
Temperatures remain well above average, with afternoon highs in
the mid 60s to lower 70s. A change towards much colder temperatures
and accumulating snow is expected to begin on Friday and then
continue through the weekend.

.Morning Update...

Morning update has been published, with "main" change being to
increase high temperatures several degrees at some locations.
Overnight low temperatures, especially in the downslope regions of
Central and North Central Montana, remained very mild for the
first week of November last night. These mild overnight lows,
which were generally in the upper 40s to low 50s, combined even
milder air just off of the surface and efficient mixing has
already allowed temperatures to warm into the mid-50s to low 60s
across North Central and Central Montana. Further to the south in
the decoupled valleys of Southwest and remainder of Central
Montana temperatures have been slower to warm this morning, but
are expected to warm with increasing solar insolation. In addition
to warming daytime highs several degrees I also re-ran diurnal to
better account for the faster warming trend this morning across
the northern 2/3rd of the CWA. Otherwise, expect another breezy to
windy day across the plains and adjacent foothills of the Rocky
Mountain Front and Central Montana mountains. - Moldan

The main concern through this TAF period will be the strong gusty
winds across central and north-central MT, and associated concerns
for low-level wind shear and mountain wave turbulence. Surface winds
may relax some overnight, but winds even just a bit above the ground
may remain strong, keeping LLWS and turbulence a concern through the
period. VFR conditions should persist through the next 24 hours.
Winds tomorrow are likely to be a bit stronger for most areas

/ISSUED 420 AM MST Tue Nov 3 2020/

Skies are clear across the region this morning, under the
influence of a broad upper level ridge. Overnight temperatures
are notably mild across North-central Montana, where a steady
southwest breeze has maintained a well mixed boundary layer. It's
a little cooler in the southwest valleys where temperature
inversions persist.

Satellite imagery shows a well developed mountain wave cloud
extending off the Canadian Rockies, revealing the strong winds
aloft that will sag south today with the flattening upper level
ridge. Expect another warm and breezy day. The strongest winds
will persist along the Rocky Mountain Front, but it will become
quite breezy this afternoon across the plains as momentum from
50kt 700mb winds mix to the surface. Those with fire weather
interests should note the combination of low relative humidity
and strong winds could produce elevated fire risk in areas where
fine fuels have dried.

Pacific moisture begins to push into the northern Rockies late
overnight into early Wednesday. The mid level winds increase a bit
more to around 60kt, while the surface pressure gradient also
becomes a bit stronger. Forecast models suggest that surface winds
increase to near high-wind criteria for the Rocky Mountain Front
on Wednesday. Although notably windy onto the adjacent plains
Wednesday afternoon, there's less confidence that winds will reach
impactful or damaging speeds. Hence the high wind watch remains in
effect Wednesday for just the Rocky Mountain Front and eastern
glacier.

The prolonged period of strong winds continue into Thursday, which
still looks like the best day for chances of widespread impactful
high winds. A high wind watch has been added across much of
North-central Montana for this potential on Thursday.

This warm and windy pattern begins to change on Friday as a large
scale trough amplifies over the Pacific Northwest and begins to
drop into the intermountain west. Pacific moisture arrives Friday
morning as snow levels begin to lower over the Northern Rockies.
Colder air from the north will arrive Friday morning, leading to a
transition from rain to snow throughout the day on Friday across
North-central Montana. Models have begun to converge on a solution
that typifies a Yellowstone Low, with the storm track from
southern Idaho into southeastern Montana. This produces an
extended period of upslope forcing across central Montana, along
with favorable forcing for dynamic lift. The ingredients are
coming together to produce a significant winter storm across the
region, with widespread impacts to travel, agriculture and
recreation. Most areas will see snow through the weekend, although
details regarding timing, locations of heavier snowfall, and
overall snowfall amounts have yet to be worked out. Temperatures
will turn sharply colder with this storm, dropping into the teens
for highs on Sunday, and near zero for lows.

The storm system becomes a potent plains storm while curving back
into the Dakotas to our east. Snow may linger into Monday before
the storm finally clears away to the east. Cool conditions follow,
with an unsettled northwesterly flow maintaining potential for
another round of light snow perhaps around next Tuesday.
