.A major winter storm will spread heavy snow and blowing snow
south and east over much of North Central, Central, and Southwest
Montana late this afternoon through this evening. Conditions will
rapidly deteriorate this evening and overnight due to increasing 
winds and falling snow. Snowfall rates from late this evening 
through Sunday morning could approach 1 to 2 inches per hour at 
times, mainly north of Interstate 90 to the Canadian border. 
Strong northerly winds tonight through Sunday over the plains 
will cause white-out conditions. Significant drifting of snow 
could also make some roads impassable.

.SYNOPSIS...

Periods of rain and mountain snow will continue over the Rocky
Mountain Front and adjacent plains today and tonight, while the
remainder of the area remains dry. Temperatures over the plains
behind a cold front will remain below normal, but the southwest
valleys will remain above normal. A strong winter storm will then
change widespread rain on Saturday to all snow Saturday night,
which will continue into Sunday night, as temperatures fall to
around 20 degrees below normal. Strong northerly winds will also
cause widespread blowing snow over the plains. Snow will move out
on Monday, but cold temperatures will linger through the week.

.Morning Update...

Morning update has been published, with only minor adjustments
made to PoPs/QPF based upon latest radar images and Hi-Res model
guidance. Otherwise the on-going forecast is handling the
situation for today well and I do not anticipate any major
surprises. Precipitation continues to fall over northwestern
portions of the CWA this morning, and will continue to fall
through most of the day. Webcam images from Glacier National Park
shows snow falling at Logan Pass, with rain transitioning to snow
at the lower valleys of St. Mary and Two Medicine. Also, rain has
switched over to snow at East Glacier based upon MDT's webcam;
however, roads remain primarily wet with snow accumulations at
East Glacier, Two Medicine, and St. Mary being confined to the
grassy/elevated surfaces. METRo models indicate that any snow
falling up on the US Hwy 2 corridor across Glacier County today
should for the most part melt off and lead to minimal impacts to
transportation (outside of some reduced visibilities in periods of
moderate snow); however, some slushy accumulations can't be ruled
out over Marias Pass. No winter weather highlights are therefore
planned for this reason up along the Rocky Mountain Front for

.AVIATION...
505 AM MST Fri Nov 6 2020 (06/12Z TAF period)

VFR conditions are expected for most of the area for most of the
next 24 hours, but worsening conditions will move in from the north
along the Rocky Mountain Front and over adjacent plains. Moderate
low and mid level winds will weaken over far Southwest Montana
(KWYS) through 18Z, for decreasing mountain wave turbulence and low
level wind shear conditions there. Otherwise, a moist southwest flow
aloft will keep mid level clouds over the northwest TFX terminals
(KCTB KHVR KGTF) through around 18Z. However, northeast upslope
winds will gradually lower ceilings to MVFR over the plains (KGTF,
KHVR, KLWT through 00Z, causing mountain obscuration. Precipitation
should mostly be focused over the Rocky Mountain Front and in the
KCTB area through around 06Z, with ceilings lowering to IFR after
18Z. KHLN and areas south will likely remain VFR, but with lowering
VFR ceilings at KHLN after 21Z. Coulston

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 505 AM MST Fri Nov 6 2020/

Today through Tonight...A moist southwest flow aloft ahead of the
next Pacific weather system to impact the area will keep light
rain and high mountain snow over the Rocky Mountain Front and
adjacent plains today. The remainder of the area should just
remain partly to mostly cloudy. A weak Canadian cold front has
also moved south over the plains, which should keep light
northerly winds over this area as temperatures cool back closer
to normal. However, the colder air should stay out of Southwest
Montana, allowing that area to stay about 10 degrees above normal.

Saturday through Sunday Night...This will, by far, be the most
active portion of the period weather-wise. The deep Pacific low
pressure trough mentioned above will deepen over the Pacific
Northwest and Great Basin, which will set up a southerly flow
aloft that will bring significant Pacific moisture into Montana.
Surface low pressure will also deepen over the Idaho/Wyoming
border area and move northeast toward the Dakotas during this
time, which will drag an even stronger Canadian cold front south
over Western and Central Montana. This will result in rain and
snow spreading southeast over the area during the day on
Saturday, but it will all change over to snow Saturday night and
continue through much of Sunday night, as highs fall into the
teens and 20s and lows fall into the single digits above and below
zero. The heaviest snow will fall over North Central and Central
Montana due to more favored upslope- enhanced snowfall. Although
gusty northerly winds will spread south across much of the area
behind the front and cause areas of blowing snow, a strong low-
level wind jet max of 35 to 45 mph will move south along the Rocky
Mountain Front, possibly creating whiteout conditions there at
times. There is also a possibility that areas that experience
heavier snow bands, as well as enhanced upslope on north-facing
slopes, could have snow rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times.
Overall, there is a very good chance that much of the plains will
get 10+ inches of snow during this time, while the southwest
valleys will mostly receive 5 to 10 inches. Will therefore
continue the Winter Storm Watch as is. Snow and blowing snow will
decrease late Sunday night as this system exits the area.

Monday through next Friday...A brief period of upper level ridging
will keep the area dry with a chance of breezy westerly downslope
winds on the plains Monday through Tuesday, which should help
daytime temperatures get above freezing on Tuesday. A more
progressive westerly flow aloft will then move weak disturbances
with mainly mountain precipitation over the area through the end
of the week, as temperatures vary between 10 and 15 degrees below
