A strong winter storm will impact the region this afternoon
through Saturday night or early Sunday. The storm will bring
widespread snow, blowing snow, and very cold wind chills. Travel
could be very hazardous tonight through Saturday night, and
motorist are urged to be prepared for winter driving conditons.

.Morning Update...

No major updates planned to the on-going forecast other than to
freshen up hourlies based on current observation trends. Otherwise
the patchy dense fog that has been seen across Central and North
Central has been gradually dissipating with increasing solar
insolation, and expect this trend to continue through the
remainder of the morning. Focus for the remainder of the shift
will be on the strong winter storm that will impact the region
from tonight through Saturday. Early model consensus this morning
continues to support the on-going forecast that significant
snowfall will impact portions of the region, with the potential
for near-whiteout/blizzard conditions from tonight through
Saturday morning over the plains of Central and North Central

Northwest flow aloft prevails tonight through about 18Z before a
strong wave aloft moves over northwestern Montana. An associated
strong surface cold front sweeps southward from Canada by 00Z
Saturday. For tonight, areas of fog producing LIFR/IFR/MVFR
conditions are possible across most of north central Montana,
continuing through 15Z. Snow, fog, low clouds producing
deteriorating flight conditions will develop from northwest to
southeast across the forecast area Friday afternoon/evening.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 331 AM MDT Fri Oct 23 2020/

Montana remains in the crosshairs for a strong early winter snow
storm beginning this afternoon and continuing through at least
Saturday evening. A strong upper level disturbance currently
over southeast Alaska will continue to move south-southeastward
today, reaching the Pacific Northwest/British Columbia border by
late afternoon. This feature then approaches western Montana
overnight in conjunction with a strong surface cold front that
sweeps southward out of Alberta into north central portions of the
state. Widespread snow (heavy at times), blowing snow, and very
cold windchills can be anticipated tonight and through the day on
Saturday. Snow gradually tapers off Saturday night or early Sunday
morning as the core of the upper level trough continues moving
southward. Models continue to be in excellent agreement on the
details of this storm with very good run-to-run consistency so
confidence is very high that impacts will be extensive and
widespread. It continues to appear that the east slopes of the
Rocky Mountains and much of central Montana could see upwards of 8
to 12 inches of snow accumulation and some models even suggest
that up to 18 inches of snow may not be out of the question. The
Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect for this region. Lesser
amounts of snow can be expected along eastern portions of the Hi-
Line and in southwest Montana. These areas are under a Winter
Weather Advisory. Finally, a surface high pressure system,
possibly as high as 1040 to 1045 millibars will be centered over
central and western Montana by Sunday morning. Low temperatures on
Sunday will likely fall to near or below zero with many record
temperatures expected to be set across the entire forecast area.

Monday through next Friday...The extended period models and
ensembles continue to indicate that warmer conditions will develop
by mid to late week. However, there have been some important
changes that have lowered confidence in this forecast solution.
Previous model runs suggested that an upper level ridge would
progress from off the West Coast into western North America. This
would place Montana beneath the ridge axis with Pacific moisture
being shunted far northward into Canada for dry and warm
conditions. More recent model runs are now trending toward keeping
this ridge along the West Coast as the upper level trough
responsible for this weekend's storm develops a strong positive
tilt over the western USA. Eventually, the southwest extension of
the trough develops into a closed low over the Desert Southwest.
This ends up placing Montana beneath a relatively dry northwest
flow aloft that should allow temperatures to warm up, but this
pattern will not be as favorable for dry and warm conditions as
the previous forecasts suggested. Meanwhile, the northern
extension of the trough progresses eastward and is absorbed into a
broad upper level trough over central and eastern Canada.
Shortwave ridging then develops over the northern Rocky Mountains
on Thursday, followed closely by another trough and an increasing
chance for moisture Friday and next weekend. mpj

...AREAS OF DENSE FOG WILL AFFECT NORTH CENTRAL MONTANA THROUGH
THIS MORNING...

Areas of fog have developed across North-Central Montana this
morning. This fog is generally resulting in visibilities of 1 to 2
miles. However, this fog is locally very dense, resulting in
visibilities of 1/4 mile or less, which is causing dangerous
driving conditions. In addition to the poor visibility, the fog
will deposit ice on roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Slow down and
use caution while traveling!

THROUGH THIS MORNING...

Areas of fog continue to persist across North-Central Montana
this morning. This fog is generally resulting in visibilities of 1
to 2 miles. However, while the fog is generally beginning to this
this morning, there are still some pockets of locally very dense
fog, which is resulting in visibilities of 1/4 mile or less.. In
addition to the poor visibility, the fog may deposit ice on
roads, bridges, and sidewalks, creating hazardous driving
conditions. Slow down and use caution while traveling!
