.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler this weekend with windy conditions. A few light Sierra
snow showers possible tonight and Sunday. Dry next week except a
threat of showers Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
Low pressure area will move through the northern interior tonight
and may bring some light snow showers along the crest will all
other areas to the west expected to remain dry. The possibility
of snow showers will linger through Sunday afternoon before
ending. The bigger concern will be the winds. Northerly winds will
be increasing this evening in the valley while northeast winds
increase later tonight in the Sierra Nevada. The strongest winds
look like they may occur Sunday morning so have adjusted the
timing of the wind advisory to start earlier and end earlier. The
strongest valley winds look like they will occur on the west side
of the valley south of Glen County Sunday morning when the
strongest support for windy conditions will occur. Northeast winds
in the mountains look the strongest Sunday morning as well.

The winds will lighten up Sunday evening enough to let the
advisory end. Breezy conditions are expected on Monday but will
become light by Tuesday.

Cold mountain temperatures the next couple of days with lows in
the teens and 20s and highs in the 30s and 40s. Compressional
heating will help to keep the valley temperatures in the 60's
during the day with some low 70s possible over the north end of
the valley by Monday. Similar to slight warming will occur on
Tuesday over Monday's highs.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday)...

Broad upper ridging across the eastern Pacific will ensure dry
conditions given additional northerly flow along its eastern
flank. Winds are to weaken considerably from earlier in the week
in the midst of well above average temperatures. Valley and Delta highs
should stay in the mid to upper 60s through Thursday accompanied
by mostly sunny skies.

By late Thursday, the mentioned ridge is forecast to shift
eastward in response to a trough slipping down from the Pacific
Northwest. The current track of this system will bring a slight
chance for mountain showers while the remainder of the region
stays dry. Additional low amplitude shortwaves are likely to
approach the region which will maintain a trough across the West
Coast. Enough uncertainty among the ensembles limits the
predictability of the forecast into next weekend. For now have
kept any shower chances in the mountains. There would also be a
potential for dry, gusty winds depending on the exact storm track.
One thing that seems for certain is the cool down bringing
temperatures closer to average for mid-February. ~BRO

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions are expected through Sunday morning. Northerly wind
gusts to increase in the Valley this afternoon. Gusts to 30 knots
are possible over the northern Sacramento Valley, 20-25 knots
over the southern & central Sacramento Valley and into the
northern San Joaquin Valley. Stronger winds are expected on
Sunday, gusting up to 40-45 knots. A Airport Weather Warning has
been issued for KRDD for gusts over 35 knots Sunday 18Z-00Z.
