.SYNOPSIS...Weak high pressure will build briefly into the area
today. The next round of storms will focus across northern and
central Utah along with southwest Wyoming Friday afternoon through
Saturday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z SUNDAY)...The trough that brought the
latest round of snow to northern Utah is now moving east across the
Rockies and into the Great Plains. Behind this trough, a weak
shortwave ridge is moving into the area. The airmass has quickly
stabilized owing to large-scale subsidence, and skies across
northern Utah has trended clearer save for some clouds over/near the
higher terrain which are quickly becoming shallower and should
largely disappear by mid-morning. Meanwhile, mid and high clouds are
transiting across southern Utah near the axis of the upper jet.
Despite 700mb warm advection developing across the area today,
temperatures in most valleys will likely remain similar to or
slightly cooler than yesterday since mixing will be limited.

The ridge will flatten tonight with a weak ripple in the flow
crossing the area tomorrow. This ripple will bring little more than
an increase in clouds. However, the next storm system will quickly
follow on its heels. This approaching storm will cause the flow at
700mb will increase out of the southwest tomorrow afternoon with a
gradually tightening south-southeasterly MSLP gradient. This will
enhance mixing and allow for warmer temperatures.

The storm system will be associated with a strong jet which will
transport moisture associated with an atmospheric river into
northern Utah. Therefore, significant precipitation will be good
possibility. Precipitation is expected to develop ahead of the Storm
late Friday afternoon or early evening across northern Utah. Because
of the aforementioned mixing, temperatures at the lower levels are
expected to be rather mild and snow levels are expected to remain
above the valley floors. The passage of a cold front and a
transition to 700mb cold advection will bring lowering snow levels
Friday night into Saturday morning. The storm will then quickly
shift east of the area Saturday afternoon. Precipitation will become
more confined to the mountains around midday Saturday, then wind
down through the rest of the afternoon. Some light snow may
redevelop across northern Utah Saturday night as 700mb warm
advection strengthens across the area.

Precipitation associated with this storm should end up being fairly
widespread with the exception of the far southern valleys.
Significant snow accumulations are expected in the mountains as well
as some of the higher valleys of northern Utah. The limiting factor
will be how quickly the storm moves through, but given the amount of
moisture that is expected to be in place, precipitation rates could
be significant. Most lower valleys are currently expected to see
only minor accumulations since much of the precipitation should
occur in the form of rain, but depending on precipitation
intensities, can not rule out some localized significant amounts
especially along the Idaho border. The heavy snow in the higher
elevations will be accompanied by gusty winds, so blowing snow will
be an added threat to the wintry conditions. A Winter Storm Watch
remains in effect for the mountains of northern Utah.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Sunday)...The main trough is expected to exit
the area early Sunday, though residual moisture and instability
could keep some showers going over the mountains of northern Utah
through Sunday afternoon. Behind the system, models are in good
agreement that high pressure will build back over the area into at
least the middle of the upcoming week, resulting in dry conditions
and a bit of a warming trend.

For Wednesday and beyond, there remains quite a bit of ensemble
spread. About a third of the guidance wants to keep the ridge in
place, about a quarter wants to flatten the ridge, while the
remainder shifts the ridge east to allow a trough to move into the
Great Basin. These various solutions could have a wide range of
impacts on the sensible weather over the forecast area, so
confidence in the forecast is lower than usual at the end of the
forecast period. For now, have shown a curbing of the warming trend
and isolated mountain POPs.

.AVIATION...The SLC terminal will see VFR conditions through the
morning with decreasing clouds. Southeast winds are expected to
shift to the northwest between 19Z and 21Z.
