.SYNOPSIS...A storm system will track east through southern and
eastern Utah today. A significantly colder and stronger storm
system will impact mainly northern Utah late Tuesday into
Wednesday, then the remainder of the state Thursday into Friday.

.DISCUSSION...The center of the upper low currently positioned
over southern Nevada will continue east across southern
Utah/Arizona as an open/weakening trough through early this
evening. Anticipating an area of light to moderate valley
rain/mountain snow associated with the trough across the southern
third of Utah. Low-level cold advection supported by the core of
the mid-level cold air, dynamic support from the open wave trough
and the favorably positioned upper jet through Arizona and
southeast Utah will create sufficient lift to produce widespread
precip today.

Focus will shift to northern Utah and the potential for a
significant winter weather event midweek. The next upper low
advancing south along the BritCol coast will take up a position
along the Pacific Northwest coast later tonight through Tuesday.

The associated low-level baroclinic zone will eventually arrive
over far northern Utah early Tuesday, then slowly advance south
across the north during the day Tuesday. Convergence into this
low-level boundary with weak shortwaves ejecting out of the
coastal upper low will produce generally light precip near the
boundary Tuesday morning through early afternoon.

Precipitation intensity and areal coverage will begin to increase
late Tuesday, with areas of moderate to locally heavy precip
possible Tuesday night through early Wednesday across northern
Utah. Frontogenesis along the low-level baroclinic zone along with
increasingly strong shortwaves ejecting over the top of the
boundary and favorable jet support will result in deep synoptic-
scale in vicinity of the low-level boundary.

The big issue in this situation will be where and when the
baroclinic zone stalls as the models have been indicating the
past several model runs. The current model iteration suggests the
boundary will stall across the central/southern Wasatch Front and
adjacent mountains. At this point confidence is fairly high that
moderate to heavy precip will concentrate along and immediately
north of this boundary, with somewhat less confidence as to where
that will eventually be. We leave the current winter storm watch
as is this morning. No updates planned to the routine forecast at
this time.

.AVIATION...Minimal operational weather concerns at the SLC
through 18Z. Scattered showers are expected to develop in the
vicinity of the terminal after 18Z, with occasional mountain
obscuration developing thereafter through about 21Z, with a 30%
chance of lingering through 23Z. Moderately gusty and erratic winds
are possible with any passing showers within the 18-23Z
timeframe.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the western two thirds of
Utah and southwest Wyoming.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A storm system will bring widespread valley rain and mountain
snow to the area today, especially across southern, central, and
eastern Utah. Generally light accumulations are expected on the
higher terrain, except across the mountains of far southern Utah
such as the Pine Valley Mountains and near Brian Head where
locally heavy snow will be possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

A couple of other storm systems Tuesday through at least Thursday
will bring colder air to the area, resulting in the potential for
snow to the valley floors. A cold front will stall across northern
Utah and southwest Wyoming late Tuesday through Wednesday which
will serve as a focus for significant precipitation. Heavy snow
is expected across portions of the northern Utah mountains and
southwest Wyoming along this boundary, with generally minor
accumulations possible in the lower valleys. The cold front will
then shift south through the rest of Utah Thursday through
Thursday night, with snow expected across the area.
