.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build across the region through Saturday. A
strong and cold storm system will impact the region late Sunday
through Monday, with much colder temperatures lingering into mid
week. An active weather pattern will persist through through late
next week.

.DISCUSSION...
It the calm before the storm, with valley inversions dominating
this morning.

Major impacts expected with this next storm. Will be re-evaluating
wind gusts tomorrow ahead of the storm, and QPF/snowfall as well
with the afternoon package. Stay tuned for updated headlines later
today.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
A significant winter storm system is expected to impact the
region from late Sunday through Monday, bringing areas of heavy
snowfall and well below average temperatures across the state.
Winter Storm Watches remain in effect for most of the forecast
area, with widespread travel impacts expected on Monday.

A mid-level ridge has pushed east of the forecast area this
morning with the thermal ridge axis expected to crest the
forecast area today. Mountain locations will see very mild
temperatures this afternoon, and while valley locations will
remain inverted, there will be enough mixing in the boundary layer
below the inversion with the warming column to support moderating
temperatures, especially for western portions of Utah. Skies will
be most clear today, with some passing high, thin clouds at
times. By tonight southwesterly winds will start to increase ahead
of the approaching storm system, which will help moderate
overnight low temperatures mainly across western Utah. On Sunday,
southwesterly flow will continue to ramp up as the storm system
will be on our doorstep by late Sunday afternoon, promoting gusty
southwest winds across southwest and west-central Utah by Sunday
afternoon ahead of the cold front, along with much warmer
temperatures.

Turning to the approaching storm system, global ensembles have
continued to come into better alignment on the timing and
evolution of this storm system. Meteorologically, confidence
remains high that this potent storm system will be strengthening
as it dives through the Great Basin Sunday night, before reaching
peak strength on top of the forecast area on Monday as it becomes
a closed low over eastern Utah by Monday night. This evolution
will favor a period of strongly forced moderate to heavy snowfall
with the 700 mb low passage late Sunday night through early Monday
morning. As the low pressure system closes off and becomes
stacked over eastern Utah Monday afternoon, the storm will greatly
slow down and meander slowly eastward into Colorado through
Monday night. This will produce a prolonged period of wrap-around
moisture in unstable, cyclonic, northwest to northerly flow that
will persist into Monday night. Thus the second phase of this
storm system will be continued light snow through the day Monday
for many, while orographically favorable locations continue to see
periods moderate snowfall that will create localized areas of
higher snowfall accumulations. This phase will slowly wind down
late Monday through early Tuesday morning, with pockets of snow
becoming increasingly tied to areas upslope flow, as the storm
system inches eastward and drier air and anticyclonic flow aloft
start to work into the area Tuesday morning.

Significant snowfall accumulations are expected across much of the
Utah mountains per usual, however significant snowfall
accumulations are also expected for the lower elevations,
including all of the I-15 corridor from around Cedar City to the
Idaho Border and the I-80 corridor from around Tooele into
Southwest Wyoming. A few lower elevation location of note that
could do particularly well with snowfall include the southern half
of the Cache Valley, the Salt Lake Valley and especially the
Tooele Valley, much of the I-15 corridor through central Utah, and
Cedar City. Lake enhancement will certainly become a factor for
increasing snowfall totals Monday afternoon through Monday night
for portions of the Salt Lake Valley and especially the Tooele
Valley, as the bitterly cold airmass pours into the area.

Temperatures will become much colder on Monday as 700 mb
temperatures plunge to around -18C, something we haven't seen
since our record setting cold outbreak back at the end of
October. Temperatures on Monday will not recover much, if at all,
in the wake of the cold front passage, with most calendar day high
temperatures occur at midnight Sunday into Monday. Highs will run
about 15-20 degrees below normal. Given these very cold
temperatures, along with continued cloud cover and areas of snow
through Monday afternoon, mother nature will not be doing us any
favors in helping to melt down the snow during the day, and thus
travel impacts may be prolonged with this storm system.

Cold north-northwest flow aloft will begin to shift to warm
advection under northwest flow as we move from Tuesday into
Wednesday. A very cold airmass remains in place keeping low
elevation valleys locked in with cold air while some high and mid
level moisture filters in from the northwest. The forecast was
further lowered from guidance for this reasoning for overnight
temperatures Tues into Wed. Warm advection under rising heights
will be present through Thursday with the High center off the
central California coast. Some weak shortwaves should allow precip
chances to be confined to northern Utah, especially the
mountains, under this warm advection pattern through the remainder
of the week. With rising heights, temperatures may begin an
upward trend through late in the week.

Through the week, while some model solutions begin to weaken (GFS)
the strength of the trough digging through the southwest, others
continue to keep the strength (ECMWF, EPS, GEFS, Canadian) in
relatively the same location. Overall, very good agreement among
deterministic and ensemble guidance. By Saturday differences in
timing and strength of the approaching next shortwave trough moving
into the Western CONUS begins to surface. It looks like late next
weekend we may have another sharp cold front to move through Utah,
however those details are pretty low confidence at this time.

.AVIATION...
Operational weather concerns will remain minimal at the KSLC
terminal through the valid TAF period. Southeasterly winds
currently in place are expected to switch to a light northwest
between 19-21z. VFR conditions under periodic high cloud cover
will be maintained.
