Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...The immediate forecast for today remains on track
with post frontal conditions in place across much of central and
northern Utah. Winds and wind gusts were updated for Monday and
Tuesday in preparation for potentially upgrading the fire weather
watch and wind highlights.

&&

.SYNOPSIS...Weather disturbances moving east across the northern
Rockies will bring cooler, more seasonal temperatures to Utah
through the upcoming week. Any precipitation will remain across
northern Utah midweek.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Wednesday)...The upper low currently
center across western Washington with a trough axis extending
southeast into northern Utah will continue east-northeast into the
northern Rockies today. The vorticity lobe that rotated northeast
through Utah yesterday has finally exited northern Utah with
clearing skies across the forecast area early this morning.

The surface cold front associated with this trough extends from
southwest through northeast Utah this morning. Substantially
cooler air to the north of the front will keep temps at or below
normal today. South of the boundary temperatures will remain warm,
though a few degrees cooler than Saturday's highs.

The next upper low to move out of the Gulf of Alaska will settle
into the Pacific Northwest late Monday night/early Tuesday.
Backing of the flow downstream from the low will produce an
increasingly strong and warm southwest flow across Utah Monday.
The warmup looks to be short-lived across northern/western Utah as
a vorticity lobe rotating east-northeast from the Pacific
Northwest low crosses Northwest Utah early Tuesday. The
associated low-level baroclinic zone will lay out across northern
Utah with substantially cooler air on the north side of the
boundary. Precipitation that developed will be confined to areas
north of the baroclinic zone where some moisture exists and
adequate dynamic and thermal support for lift will exist near the
Pacific Northwest upper low.

A secondary vorticity lobe will rotate out of the parent low and
move across eastern Idaho/far northern Utah late Tuesday night.
This feature could bring another quick burst of precip as low-
level frontogenic forcing develops with the arrival of the mid-
level vorticity lobe. Significantly cooler air trailing this
feature will knock temperatures down again heading into Wednesday.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Wednesday)... The medium range models are a
little out of phase with each other with the trough orientation from
the Northern Rockies into the western Great Basin from Wednesday
through Saturday. The EC ensemble mean and Canadian ensemble mean
(to some extent) are more in line with each other in bringing the
axis across Utah Wednesday morning and progressing it into the High
Plains Thursday into Friday. In this progressive pattern a ridge
will move into the PacNW by Friday and across the Intermountain West
by Sunday. Meanwhile, the GFS ensemble mean keeps a trough axis
sagged over the western Great Basin through Saturday with ridging
delayed by 36-48 hrs.

Have trended towards the EC (which the cluster tool shows has a
higher probability of occurring). The EC forecasts some dynamics
such as 700mb cold advection and jet support over northern Utah into
southwest Wyoming for stray to scattered showers Wednesday morning
over mainly the northern mountains and SW Wyoming. However, with the
trough being progressive the showers end by midday and a dry west to
northwest flow develops for the remainder of the extended with a
steady warming trend from 5-10 degrees below normal Wednesday to 10
degrees or more above normal by the weekend. Across the south,
temperatures will be near normal Wednesday and trend upwards to
about 5-10 degrees above normal by the weekend.

.AVIATION...Minimal impacts expected at KSLC today with VFR conditions and
mainly light winds. Light northerly winds will continue through
midday before increasing in speed some this afternoon. Light
northerly wind will then continue through much of tonight. Winds may
briefly shift to the south around 10-12Z Monday morning, but could
also just become calm to light and variable.

.FIRE WEATHER...A series of weather disturbances moving inland
through the Pacific Northwest will cross the northern Rockies
and northern Great Basin through midweek. Surface cold fronts
associated with these disturbances will bring cooler temperatures
to the northern fire districts, with a chance for showers
confined mainly to the northern third of Utah midweek.

These cold fronts will remain dry as they progress south into
central and southern Utah. Gusty southerly winds ahead of these
fronts along with persistent low humidity will create critical
fire weather conditions early in the week. Cooler temperatures
will finally settle into the southern half of Utah for the
latter half of the week. Decreasing winds and modestly higher
humidity values will bring a break in critical fire weather
conditions by late Wednesday or Thursday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the western two thirds of
Utah and southwest Wyoming.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Breezy conditions will return to the area Monday and Tuesday.
These winds, combined with low humidities and dry fuels, will
create hazardous fire weather conditions across western and
southwest Utah on Monday and spreading across far southern Utah
Tuesday.

Cooler temperatures will spread across the northern outlook area
by Tuesday. Temperatures will run around 5 to 10 degrees below
normal across the north Tuesday and Wednesday. Southern and
eastern Utah will see temperatures hovering around normal
midweek.

Precipitation will be limited to far northern Utah and southwest
Wyoming late Monday night through Tuesday night. Most of the
precipitation will be in the form of rain, though a few of the
higher peaks could see a little snow at times.

A fairly strong cold front will surge south through the outlook
area Wednesday. Below normal temperatures are expected across all
but the extreme southern portion of the outlook area through the
end of the week. Warmer temperatures will return heading into the
weekend.
