.SYNOPSIS...High pressure remains across the region today. A
mainly dry cold front will cross the area Thursday. Another,
stronger cold front will impact the state this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...High pressure remains in place across the region
this morning. A large continental longwave trough currently
stretches across much of central Canada and through the northern
Rockies, northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Utah is under mainly
northwesterly flow on the western periphery of the longwave
trough. This has brought increased cloud cover over portions of
northern and eastern Utah this morning.
Another unseasonably warm day is on tap, with temperatures
averaging 7-15 degrees above normal for the date. Another warm day
is expected Wednesday.
A digging shortwave trough associated with the previously
mentioned longwave trough will cross into the northern
Intermountain region Wednesday, reaching southern Idaho by
Thursday morning. Though most if not all of the threat of
precipitation will remain north and east of the Utah/Idaho
border, this trough will push a strong cold front through the
state Thursday. This will cool temperatures on the order of 15 to
20 degrees across the northern and central portions of the state
over Wednesday's highs.
Updated the forecast this morning to adjust hourly temperatures
across the Wasatch Front as temps are warming faster than expected
and to increase cloud cover across northern/eastern Utah based on
current trends/observational data. No additional updates are
anticipated.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at KSLC through the valid
TAF period. Southeast winds will transition to the northwest around
19Z with scattered high cloud cover. Fewer clouds are expected later
in the afternoon, with winds becoming southeast around 03Z.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 445 AM MDT Tuesday
The weather pattern will change little today from
what it has been for the past few days, as a warm, dry and stable
northwesterly flow aloft remains in place. However, changes are on
the way as a series of troughs are expected to affect the area late
tomorrow through early next week. Expect winds to increase a bit
tomorrow afternoon with a slight warming and drying trend ahead of
the arrival of the cold front. These winds will combine with low
humidities, mainly across portions of central and southern Utah, to
create potentially hazardous fire weather conditions. The front will
push south across the area tomorrow evening through Thursday, with
significantly cooler temperatures following the front. Gusty winds
will continue along and behind the front, with a potential for
critical fire weather conditions across some of the eastern valleys
and far southern Utah on Thursday. However, very little or no
precipitation is expected with the front. A second cold front still
looks like a possibility for the weekend which may produce some snow
in the mountains and higher valleys of northern Utah.
