Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...An unseasonably warm southwest flow aloft will persist
through Saturday. A fast moving storm system will bring much
colder temperatures statewide with valley rain and mountain snow
for northern Utah and southwest Wyoming late in the weekend.

&&

.UPDATE DISCUSSION...A very subtle upper level short wave is
currently translating northeast across the forecast area this
morning, with scattered cloud cover associated with its eastern
periphery extending from southwestern Utah NE into southwestern
Wyoming. Light southerly flow in advance of this has tapped a bit
of mid level moisture, with PWAT values maximized near .50" across
central and eastern Utah this morning. In large however the
environment remains very dry (exceptionally dry sub-cloud). Subtle
forcing tied closest to a weak upper level jetlet on the
downstream side of this wave combined with diurnal heating over
the elevated heat sources in those regions is expected to aid
isolated high based convective buildups this afternoon, and a
possibility of a sprinkle or two over the Uintas. Said, similar to
yesterday, anticipating more virga than not with any convective
buildups.

Bottom line...unseasonably warm temperatures and dry conditions
will dominate again today. Made minor tweaks to previous forecast
regarding cloud trends and potential coverage of convection as
the only updates this morning.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...The latest deterministic guidance continues
to show the cold core upper trough entering the Pacific Northwest
early Saturday, then continuing on a near zonal trajectory across
the northern Rockies and northern Great Basin this weekend. The
associated surface front will reach northwest Utah Saturday
afternoon, then continue south into southern Utah by Sunday
morning. Strong low-level cold advection will support this front
with significant low-level forcing expected as the front moves
across northern Utah Saturday evening.

Precipitation will likely concentrate behind the front across
northern Utah/southwest Wyoming in close proximity to the
stronger mid-level dynamic/thermal support with the passing upper
trough. Recent deterministic guidance has been fairly consistent
with a more easterly trajectory of the trough, so will keep the
bulk of the precipitation confined to the northern third of the
forecast area. Substantially lower snow levels will bring some
accumulating snows to the northern mountains, with rain or
rain/snow mixed across the higher northern valleys. Lower valleys
should remain as rain.

Pre-frontal winds associated with the advancing front could
become an issue for much of northern/western Utah Saturday
afternoon and evening. Post-frontal west winds will also come
into play across northwest Utah with the front strengthening as
it moves south and near 700mb westerly winds running between
35-45 knots Saturday night/early Sunday.

The aforementioned trough will continue to lift into the Great
Lakes region at the start of the extended period. At the same time
a trough off of the California coast will begin to slowly build
along the U.S. west coast. Models have come into better agreement
with this building ridge, with the EPS and GEFS essentially
meeting in the middle. Increasing 500 mb heights will result in
warmer, near seasonal temperatures on Monday. Heights and
temperatures will continue to increase for Tuesday and Wednesday
with high temperatures running around 5 degrees above average for
northern Utah and 10 degrees above average for southern Utah.

Westerly mid-level flow looks to continue into Thursday and Friday
of next week with the jet stream remaining north across the northern
Rockies. Some uncertainty exists in model solutions as some GEFS
members try to bring another, weaker trough just to our north
Thursday while a larger majority of guidance keeps it well north.
This will only have an impact on our temperatures, but the GEFS is
trending with fewer members showing this further south trough. For
now, NBM is showing a slight cool down Thur/Fri but suspect later
runs will trend warmer.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at the SLC terminal during
the daytime hours with decreasing high clouds. Light but generally
southerly winds should become prevailing northwesterly by 18Z. Smoke
in the vicinity of the terminal will result in some reduction in
visibility, but visibility should remain above 6 SM.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...The unseasonably warm southwest flow aloft across
the Great Basin will persist through Saturday. A cold upper
level trough will advance east into the Pacific Northwest early
Saturday, then remain on a eastward trajectory through the
northern Rockies and northern Great Basin over the weekend.

Embedded weak weather disturbances in the southwest flow across
the region will bring periodic cloud cover with only a slight
chance of high-based convection through tonight. Winds will likely
increase as these disturbances pass through the area. These
somewhat elevated winds along with already low humidity could
generate pockets of critical fire weather conditions across west-
central through southwest Utah this afternoon.

Big temperature changes are expected later this weekend as a cold
Pacific storm system enters the Pacific Northwest early Saturday,
then continue east through the region over the weekend. Ahead of
this feature the surface cold front will advance into northwest
Utah Saturday afternoon, then sweep south into southern Utah by
Sunday morning. Critical fire weather conditions due to low
humidity and strong winds will likely develop Saturday afternoon,
and continue well into the evening ahead of the front, and briefly
behind the front prior to the development of precipitation. A
Fire Weather Watch will remain in effect for now, but will likely
be pushed up to a Red Flag Warning in many areas in subsequent
forecasts.

Much colder temperatures are expected behind the cold front
Sunday. Precipitation will likely lag back across northern Utah in
closer proximity to the upper level weather disturbance passing by
to the north of the state. Snow levels will drop enough to bring
snow to the northern mountains with rain or rain/snow mixed across
the higher northern valleys. Lower valleys will likely remain in
rain through this event. Wetting precipitation will be fairly
widespread through the mountains and adjacent valleys Saturday
night through Sunday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the western two thirds of
Utah and southwest Wyoming.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Unseasonably warm temperatures are expected again today.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

The unseasonably warm temperatures will persist through Saturday,
High temperatures will run 10 to 20 degrees above early October
norms.

A cold Pacific storm system will move east across the northern
Rockies and northern Great Basin during the latter half of the
weekend. A strong cold front will sweep south across the outlook
area Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Much colder air behind the
front will lower temperatures around 15 to 25 degrees, bringing
a more typical fall-like feel for Sunday and into early next week.

Gusty southerly winds will exist ahead of the cold front Saturday
afternoon and evening. These winds will remain quite strong out
of the west behind the frontal passage across portions of northern
Utah and southwest Wyoming Saturday evening.

Precipitation associated with this storm system will remain over
the northern half of the outlook area Saturday night through
Sunday. Lowering snow levels will bring some accumulating snows to
the northern mountains, with rain for the valley locations.
