.SYNOPSIS...Warm temperatures with mountain thunderstorms will
continue into the weekend. A pair of cold fronts Sunday and
Monday will usher in early fall-like temperatures for the first
half of next week. High pressure will build back in for the second
half of the week.

.DISCUSSION...Morning analysis indicates an area of weakening
showers across far eastern portions of the CWA near the Green
River as well as a decaying shortwave across central Utah. As has
been the case for much of August, a broad ridge is in place across
the southern Plains/NM/northern Mexico. A clearly defined
shortwave is crossing through northern Nevada today...across the
north and western portion of this ridge. Given the ridge
placement...this shortwave will continue to weaken over the next
24 hours.
Surface observations indicate yesterdays cold front is located
across central Utah, though the boundary is disorganized and
difficult to resolve this morning. Current CAMS trends have backed
off on convective development along this boundary this
afternoon...but for now kept low end PoPs in this area. Will
monitor trends into early afternoon.
Current mesoanalysis and CAMS trends indicate SBCAPE values will
approach 500-750 J/kg near the Nevada/Utah/Idaho triple point this
afternoon and evening. This combined with weak lift associated
with the previously mentioned shortwave and 30-35kt deep layer
shear may allow a few thunderstorms to develop near the
Utah/Nevada border later this afternoon into this evening.
Transitory organization is possible with these
thunderstorms...though the best chance for small hail/gusty winds
will be near the Raft Rivers.
Showers and a few thunderstorms are again possible along the
higher terrain of central and southern Utah and adjacent valleys.
The absence of instability and deep layer shear should preclude
anything beyond weak convection.
Updated the forecast to match sky and PoP to better match current
observational trends and 12Z CAMS/model guidance. No additional
updates are anticipated at this time.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are anticipated at KSLC through the
valid TAF period. A light southeast drainage wind will transition
to a northwest lake breeze around 18Z. There is a slight chance
for a rain shower in the vicinity between 04Z and 08Z.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 355 AM MDT Fri Aug 28 2020
Lingering moisture with weak weather disturbances ejecting out of
the Great Basin across Utah today and Saturday will result in
some isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Today, the best locations for storms are over northwest Utah and
eastern Utah. By Saturday, some increasing moisture into southern
Utah will help focus the better chance for storms across southern
and eastern Utah. Any storms should be largely wet, although
isolated dry lightning is possible along with gusty and erratic
outflow winds.
A mainly dry cold front will push through Utah on Sunday and
Sunday evening, with critical fire weather conditions possible
from gusty winds and low humidity. A stronger cold front is
expected to push across the state on Monday, with possibly even
stronger and more widespread gusty winds. The stronger cold front
Monday is more likely to be accompanied by showers, although any
precipitation amounts are likely to be underwhelming. Much cooler
temperatures are likely by Tuesday before a steady warming trend
back to above normal temperatures through the end of the week.
