Wasatch Front, exceeding 110F across St. George.
By this afternoon, a 600 dam high will be centered over the Four
Corners region. The northern stream will remain active with yet
another shortwave crossing into the Pacific Northwest. This
shortwave will bring a dry, weak cold front into northern Utah
Sunday. This front will effectively slow or stall across central
Utah later Sunday.
This will set up a split regime across the state, with northern
portions of the state cooling a few degrees Sunday into early next
week and the southern part of the state remaining very hot, windy
and dry into Monday. The next shortwave should push another front
through the entire state...cooling southern Utah a bit by Tuesday.
Excessive heat warnings remain in effect for the St. George area,
Zion National Park and the Lake Powell area into Monday. A heat
advisory is in effect for the Swell for the same time period. Even
across northern Utah, it will be quite hot and those planning
outdoor activities should be heat safe.
Fire weather watches remain in effect across portions of southern
and eastern Utah Sunday into Monday. Will look at whether to
upgrade these with relevant partners for the afternoon package.
Given the large ridge in place, any convection associated with a
very weak mid-level moisture increase across the southern half of
Utah this afternoon and evening is expected to be weak at best.
Deep layer shear is meager, combined with maybe 250-500 J/kg of
SBCAPE. Forecast soundings bring into question the ability to
maintain charge separation for lightning but can't rule out a
handful of strikes across western and southern Utah this afternoon
and evening. Gusty and erratic winds will be the main threat with
anything that forms.
Aside from subtle sky cover adjustments, current forecast is on
track and no additional updates are anticipated.

.AVIATION...No weather concerns at the SLC terminal through
the TAF period with VFR conditions prevailing. Northwest winds
sustained 4-7 mph will increase to 6-10 mph after 20Z then shift
back to southeast after 04Z tonight.

.FIRE WEATHER...A ridge of high pressure currently situated over
the Desert Southwest Four-Corners area will slowly slide east
through the weekend. Very hot daytime temperatures and a very dry
airmass will remain in place. As the high shifts east, a small
area of elevated moisture will present across the central and
southern mountains of Utah today and Sunday afternoon, allowing
for isolated high based convection.
A far northern trough will act to sandwich the ridge and push a
boundary into northern Utah Sunday into Monday, resulting in gusty
winds especially across southern and central Utah. Critical fire
weather conditions are possible Sunday and Monday across this
area. The northern trough will slide east Tuesday allowing the
ridge to push back west and temperatures to gradually warm through
the week, once again.
