PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the midday sun, and check up 
on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never 
be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

.SYNOPSIS...
One last night of widespread marine layer clouds tonight, extending
to the coastal foothills, before we transition to a dry, offshore
pattern Sunday night through Tuesday. Expect rapid warming Monday
into Tuesday, with highs 10 to 15 degrees above normal by midweek
west of the mountains, and elevated fire weather conditions at
times. Cooler weather will return late in the week as onshore flow
rebuilds and marine layer into the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Clouds remained anchored along the coastal slopes of the mountains
this evening as clouds reformed over the coastal basin. The onshore
sfc pressure gradients were strong and holding over 10 MBS to the
high deserts. Peak westerly wind gusts over 65 MPH were measured in
the San Gorgonio Pass today but were slightly weaker this evening.
The 00Z Miramar sounding had a weak inversion based near 3200 FT
MSL, which was already 2500 FT lower than this morning. The strong
onshore gradients should help to fill back in the stratus west of
the mts overnight, but it should clear quickly on Sunday morning.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect tonight, and for the high deserts
on Sunday. This will keep temperatures a bit below average, but it
will be warmer than today. No forecast updates are planned this
evening.

From previous discussion...

As the longwave trough currently off the West Coast marches inland
this weekend, it will pave the way for increased northwest flow
aloft as the trough axis crosses the region Sunday night and
modest surface low pressure begins to build across the Great
Basin. Pressure gradients will turn offshore on Monday, bringing a
period of offshore winds into Tuesday. The strongest of the
offshore winds are likely on Monday, especially in the vicinity of
Cajon Pass, with potential localized gusts to around 40 mph.
Offshore flow on Tuesday looks to be weaker, albeit more
widespread, particularly in San Diego County. Although areas near
the coast will remain under the influence of the marine air mass,
inland zones may see humidity lower into the teens both Monday and
Tuesday, resulting in elevated to locally critical fire weather
conditions.

Temperatures will rise sharply both Monday and Tuesday thanks to
the offshore flow pattern and weak ridging, with areas west of
the mountains seeing highs 10 to 15 degrees above normal by
Tuesday-Wednesday. The warmth will be most noticeable at the coast
where low 80's can be expected, with inland valleys climbing into
the 90's and even some Inland Empire hotspots nearing the century
mark. Deserts will be warm too, with the Coachella Valley
approaching 105 by mid-week, although the departure from normal
will be more subdued.

As we head into the latter half of the work week, onshore flow
will return with a gradual cooling trend and a likely increase in
marine layer clouds ahead of a building trough across the West
Coast.

.AVIATION...
060300Z...Coast/Valleys...SCT-BKN low clouds with bases 2000-3000 ft
MSL along the coast and SCT-BKN mid-level clouds with bases 4000-
6000 ft MSL in the valleys tonight. Bases will lower to 1500-2500 ft
MSL with tops to around 3000 ft MSL overnight. Clearing is expected
15-18Z Sunday. Coastal mountain slopes remaining obscured in clouds
through late tonight. Mostly clear with unrestricted vis Sunday
afternoon and evening.

Mountains/Deserts...Strong W/NW surface winds 15-25 kt with gusts 35-
40 kt continuing through tonight. Winds will weaken slightly Sunday,
with gusts to around 30 kt. Areas of LLWS, moderate to strong
up/down drafts, and blowing dust in the desert are likely. Vis may
drop to 2-4 miles in areas of blowing dust.

.MARINE...
Gusty winds and large combined seas will create hazardous boating
conditions through Monday afternoon. Northwest winds with gusts 20-
25 kt will continue overnight in the outer coastal waters. Stronger
winds, with gusts 25-30 kt are expected in both the inner and outer
waters Sunday afternoon and evening. Winds will strengthen again
over the coastal waters Sunday evening, with gusts 25 to 30 kt
expected. Winds will weaken early Monday morning. Seas will build
tonight, peaking near 12 ft Sunday night before subsiding through
the day Monday. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through
Monday.

.BEACHES...
High rip current risk and elevated surf of 5 to 6 ft will continue
tomorrow, mainly in Orange County. This long period south/southwest
swell will begin to subside into Monday before a new long period
south swell builds Tuesday into Wednesday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The atmosphere will be drying over the next 24 to 48 hours, first
across the deserts, and then west of the mountains as offshore flow
develops and becomes strong and gusty below passes and canyons.

On Sunday, westerly winds of 25 to 35 MPH with higher gusts and
RH values falling to 10-15 percent will greatly elevate the threat
of wildfire across the high deserts, and to a lesser extent, eastern
portions of the Coachella Valley. By Sunday night into Monday, the
main threat will shift to the coastal slopes and foothill areas as
winds turn offshore. The strongest winds/gusts will be on Monday,
and then weaken a bit into Tuesday, but the flow will scour out the
marine layer and result in very warm afternoons with minimum RH
values of 10-15 percent west of the mountains. Critical fire weather
conditions are possible for several hours on Monday, but fuels
contain a higher moisture content than average, especially with
recent rains and this should help mitigate the wildfire risk.

The above average temperatures and low RH will persist into Thursday
as the afternoon sea breezes struggle to get the upper hand. By
Friday, the onshore flow should be substantial enough to reestablish
the marine layer along the coast, with recovery into the weekend.
