.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday Night)
Issued at 257 PM CST Tue Feb 4 2020

A very complex winter weather scenario will be playing out from this
evening through Wednesday night for southwest Missouri and southeast
Kansas. Certainly no shortage of forecast challenges, ranging from
surface temperatures, precipitation amounts and type and
corresponding ground and road temperatures factoring in for
potential impacts.

Early this afternoon the freezing line has made it into southeast
Kansas into central Missouri, with rain showers mainly across the
central and eastern Ozarks into portions of central Missouri.
Will see this freezing line slowly work its way southeast tonight,
setting up somewhere near the highway 60 corridor by morning.
Although first wave of heavier precipitation pushes east, will
continue to see light amounts overnight, with ice accumulations of
a glaze expected north of highway 60. With warm ground and roads
and temperatures only settling into the upper 20s to lower 30s
impacts will be minimal, concentrated on elevated objects, bridges
and untreated roads. Will continue the winter weather advisory as
is for tonight.

The next surge of moisture then pushes northeast into the area on
Wednesday. Biggest change has been a slower erosion of the warm nose
which will result in more ice accumulation, especially over portions
of south central Missouri. Nice coupled 300 mb jet to enhance lift
across the region with strong omega within the dendritic growth zone
per BUFKIT sounds, should result in higher snow totals of 4 to 6
inches along and north of interstate 44, with pockets of 6+ inches
possible. One concern is the transition zone currently along
Interstate 44. Soundings show a nearly isothermal layer near 0
Celsius. Depending on exact warm nose temperatures, could see a zone
of decent sleet accumulation that would cut down on snow amounts.
After collaboration with neighboring offices, did decide to upgrade
Winter Storm Watch to a Warning and added a few counties to the
south. Otherwise, remainder of the area will remain under a winter
weather advisory. Precipitation will continue into Wednesday
evening, before tapering off late Wednesday night.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 257 PM CST Tue Feb 4 2020

Main upper level trough will swing through the area on Thursday.
Despite the potential for clearing skies and some sun, expected snow
cover over the area will keep temperatures quite cold, likely having
a difficult time getting above the freezing mark. A quiet period is
then expected for Friday into Friday night and possibly into
Saturday. Still expect below normal temperatures given potential
snow pack with lows in the teens and 20s and highs just in the 30s,
to perhaps 40.

Upper flow does transition from northwest to southwest as we head
late into the weekend and into early next week. As this occurs, will
see the potential increase for some precipitation to again impact the
southern Missouri and southeast Kansas. How quickly we warm will be
highly dependent on how much snow is still around. The temperature
forecast at this point is very low confidence.

KSGF/KJLN/KBBG tafs: A cold front to the south will stall with a
wave or waves of low pressure moving along it. Generally IFR
conditions/ceilings will occur through the period. Periods of
rain/drizzle will switch over to a wintry mix or snow later in the
period as colder air moves into the area.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of the Missouri
Ozarks and extreme southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Weather hazards expected...

  Limited flooding risk.
  Limited lightning risk.
  Elevated ice accumulation risk.
  Limited snow and sleet risk.

DISCUSSION...

A cold front will slowly move through the area today with a
chance for a few thunderstorms over far southern Missouri.
Locally heavy rain may lead to some flooding over south
central Missouri.

Light wintry mix of freezing rain and freezing drizzle will
overspread the region later today. A glaze of ice to one tenth of
an inch is possible for areas along and north of Highway 54 this
afternoon into this evening, and along and near Interstate
44 late this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Confidence has increased in accumulating snowfall on Wednesday. A
Winter Storm Watch highlights an area where the heaviest snow is
possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible
along and northwest of the Interstate 44 corridor. Snowfall amounts
will taper off to the southeast.
