.UPDATE...No changes were needed to the forecast this evening. In
the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, a weak ridge will
build northward into the area as an upstream trough over the
Pacific (currently located between 150 and 140 W and around 45 N)
digs slightly southward through the overnight hours. As this upper
low digs south, a surface wave will develop along an existing
stationary frontal boundary and begin to move east. This will help
lift the portion of the stationary boundary over N Oregon
northward as a warm front into WA, while a cold front develops to
the W/SW of the sfc wave over the Pacific.
As the warm front lifts northward overnight into WA, strong
frontogenetical forcing is expected in its vicinity, with very
strong WAA in the 850-700mb layer accompanying it. This should
lead to widespread moderate to locally heavy rainfall across much,
if not all, of the area overnight tonight and through Monday
morning. Given these conditions, snow levels will rise quite a bit
during this timeframe, likely to between 6000 and 7000ft across
at least the southern half to 3/4ths of the CWA. The track of the
low will be important tomorrow, with a current rough estimate
being from Grays Harbor to central Puget Sound through the
afternoon. Very strong WAA looks to continue along and south of
this line through at least 18z before the cold front rapidly
begins to move into the area, in tandem with increasing larger
scale aloft as the shortwave itself approaches. Current thoughts
and trends from the previous forecast in regards to snow potential
have not changed this evening. Uncertainty in regards to the
finer details, such as exact low track, warm frontal placement,
and the degree of cold air advection or any diabatic cooling during
the cold frontal passage will have significant implications to
the precip type. Current guidance is still suggestive of a short
period of rapid cooling of the atmospheric column tomorrow
afternoon and evening.

.SYNOPSIS...A front will bring rain, heavy at times, tonight
through Monday morning. Snow levels will lower as cold air filters
in the area Monday afternoon and evening with snow possibly mixing
with rain. An upper ridge will bring dry weather Tuesday through
Thursday. Wet weather Christmas Day into Saturday as a front move
through the area over the weekend.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Dry weather across most
locations this afternoon with the bulk of the moisture south of
the area. An area of low pressure located along the plume of
moisture in the Pacific will track northeast through tonight. A
warm front will slide north into the area and stall in the
vicinity of the area on Monday as the low tracks towards the
coast. This is where the forecast for Monday becomes relatively
difficult with considerable uncertainty. Let's go over some of
the key points for the Monday system:
Storm Track: The track of the system on Monday will play a large
role in the following weather factors mentioned in other sections.
Most guidance brings the system onshore Monday morning (around
18z) somewhere between Hoquiam and Quillayute. The system will
then track east towards the Cascades and strengthen a bit as it
does so. There is some uncertainty where the low tracks east of
the Cascades, which will determine the exact orientation of the
precipitation banding.
Snow Potential: Most likely what most are reading this discussion
for, so let's discuss the snow potential. Starting off tonight
through Monday morning, precipitation will be rain, some of which
will be heavy at times, as a warm front slides north across the
area and into the Puget Sound vicinity. Snow levels, initially
around 3500 feet this evening will rise to near 6500 feet by
Monday morning with the warm front draped somewhere along the
central Puget Sound. Snow levels north of the front will be
significantly lower near 2000 feet. The first location that may
see a transition to rain/snow mix will be on the northern end of
the Olympic Peninsula. Cold air will filter in sooner in this
location on the NW side of the low with some upslope potential. If
any location across Western Washington observes some amount of
snow accumulation, it will most likely be in this area along the
Strait of Juan de Fuca. However, snow levels may not be low enough
to reach the shores of the Strait, and may remain around 1000
feet. With that said, at least an inch (or possibly more) may be
possible in the area from Port Angeles to Sequim. Short range hi-
res guidance does suggest this area sees higher amounts, and even
most GEFS members would be on the higher end of guidance. A mix of
HREF and ECWMF ensemble members would lean towards the lower
amounts, with the thinking it may be difficult for higher amounts
with lack of cold air in place and even into BC. However, those in
this area should monitor the forecasts for any increase in
amounts through tonight.
In regards to the snow potential along the Puget Sound and into
the Cascade Foothills, there is considerable uncertainty. Overall,
the primary concern is the fact that this setup doesn't suggest
much wintry precipitation in the area, not to mention the lack of
cold air in place with temperatures today through tonight in the
40s to low 50s. Possibly the biggest piece of the puzzle for snow
potential in the Puget Sound will be the extent dynamic cooling
during the heaviest precipitation on Monday afternoon. HRRR, 3K
NAM, and other hires models have a changeover to a brief heavy
thump of snow Monday afternoon across areas of the Puget Sound as
cold air filters in. If this does occur, the primary concerns in
regards to impacts would most likely be a quick reduction in
visibility with a heavy, wet rain/snow mix. The current thinking
regarding any accumulations would be trace amounts on grassy
surfaces (at best) near the water, with less than an inch for the
Cascade Foothills (or snow levels above 700-1000 feet). Timing of
this would be focused on 10AM-2PM north of King County, mainly
late afternoon into the evening south of this area. However, it is
also possible guidance is overdoing the extent of cooling and a
cold rain will be the main focus for most of the area on Monday.
Of course, it is also possible, albeit not expected, that the snow
event plays out as shown on shorter range guidance. The current
thinking though is that significant accumulations aren't expected
for the Puget Sound area at this time, though monitor the
forecasts through tonight.
Wind: Although the winds won't be overly stronger, southerly winds
will be quite breezy south of where the warm front stalls,
currently expected to be somewhere on an east-west axis from near
Hoquiam towards Seattle. Gusts of 30-40 MPH can't be ruled out
during the morning with winds transitioning more northerly by the
afternoon as the cold front moves through.
Once we reach Monday night, precipitation will taper off
relatively quickly as dry air filters into Western Washington.
Some light precipitation will be around Tuesday morning for the
Cascades. Snow for the Cascade Passes Monday night with snow
levels dropping to near 1000-1500 feet. Amounts of 3 to 6 inches
possible for Snoqualmie Pass with locally higher amounts for
Stevens Pass. Dry weather for Tuesday and Wednesday as an upper
ridge moves over Western Washington. Temperatures will be cooler
into next week in the mid 40s.
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...Dry weather for most on
Thursday as the upper ridges slides east of the area. A front will
move through Western Washington on Christmas Day for rain chances
and mountain snow. The trough will slide east of the area over
the weekend with an upper low possibly moving south of the area by
later in the weekend. Temperatures in the mid 40s through the
week. JD

.AVIATION...Westerly flow aloft continues with a moist and
stable air mass in place. Low level onshore is weakening and will
turn offshore tonight. VFR ceilings will deteriorate back to low
MVFR/IFR once again tonight in increasing rain as the next frontal
system approaches. As this warm front moves northward tonight and
into Monday morning expect moderate to heavy rain which will
result in decreased visibility. As the cold front approaches
Monday afternoon expect south/southwesterly winds to be picking
up. Gusts for much of Western Washington terminals are expected to
be 20-25 knots, with up to 30 knots at coastal locations. It is
possible that terminals could see some rain/snow mix late Monday
afternoon into the evening. Accumulation is not expected at this
time.
KSEA...VFR ceilings will continue to lower back to MVFR as rain
is moving into the area. IFR conditions with reduced surface
visibility in moderate to occasional heavy rain come Monday
morning as a warm front lifts northward across the area. Colder
air filters in behind trailing cold front Monday night. May see a
rain/snow mix for a period early Monday evening, but no
accumulation. Surface winds S-SW 7 to 12 knots easing and backing
to easterly tonight. Southerly surface winds rising to 15 gusting
25 knots near 15Z Monday morning as warm front arrives.

.MARINE...The only change to the marine forecast this evening was
to upgrade the Gale Watch over the offshore waters to a Gale
Warning beginning at 4AM Monday. Outside of this change, the
remainder of the forecast is on track. Seas will remain above
10ft over the offshore waters and west entrance of the Strait of
Juan de Fuca overnight before winds pick up Monday morning. A
small craft advisory for hazardous seas covers this well. Winds
still look to pick up over the interior waters Monday morning,
with gale watches in place for the Northern Inland Waters
begining Monday afternoon to account for strong winds coming out
of the Strait of Georgia. Previous discussion follows:
Onshore flow will ease today then turn offshore tonight
as a warm front lifts north through the region. Meanwhile, coastal
seas remain high at 10-14 feet. North to northwest flow will prevail
on Monday as a cold front moves inland. Winds may reach gale force
for portions of the coastal waters and northern inland waters Monday
into Monday evening with small craft advisory conditions expected
elsewhere. Quieter conditions expected later Tuesday into Wednesday
as a surface ridge slides eastward across the waters. The next
frontal system will arrive Thursday night or Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...Current hydro forecast remains on track this evening.
The Skokomish River remains the river of most concern through
Monday. It currently is right around flood stage this evening and
will fall slightly below before quickly rising back towards
moderate flood stage by Monday evening as widespread moderate
rainfall returns overnight and continues all day Monday. The flood
warning has been continued for the Skokomish River. Previous
discussion below:
Mostly dry conditions will persist across Western
Washington for the next several hours. Rainfall associated with
the atmospheric river will shift northward this evening as the
last system approaches the northwest coast. HREF guidance
continues to indicate the warm front with the aforementioned
system stalling across Puget Sound Monday morning, rising snow
levels to around 6000-7000 feet and keeping most areas in
moderate to heavy rainfall through much of the day. While rivers
are expected to rise, most outside of the Skokomish will remain
below flood stage due to the long break between last night's rain
and the onset of rain tonight. Rainfall accumulations will be
similar, ranging from 1 to 2 inches in the lowlands and 2 to 3
inches in the mountains, with isolated areas of 4 inches possible.
This period of persistent moderate to heavy rain will increase the
threat for shallow landslides across the area Monday into Tuesday as
soil moistures will approach critical thresholds. The greatest risk
currently lies across the South Sound and into parts of the Central
and Southern Cascades.
A dry period is expected from Tuesday through at least Thursday,
allowing rivers to crest and recede, as well as allowing soils to
dry and stabilize.
