What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Seattle, WA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Dec 17, 9:18 AM PST, 6 hours 27 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 17, 9:18 AM PST, 6 hours 27 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
918 AM PST Thu Dec 17 2020

.SYNOPSIS...A low pressure system moved inland this morning.
Scattered showers will linger--mainly near the Cascades today.
The next front will arrive Friday afternoon. A rather wet
frontal system will reach the area over the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...No updates this morning.
Snow showers continue in the passes and a winter weather advisory
continues til noon. Showers taper off this afternoon and evening
with a lull in the weather overnight. But the break in the weather
will be short-lived, as weak transitory shortwave ridging moves on
and heights begin to fall again ahead of the next front that will
approach the coast by early Friday. Expect another round of gusty
winds both along the coast and from around Admiralty Inlet north
through the San Juan Islands and along the western portions of
Whatcom and Skagit counties. Another round of heavy rain will move
across the region on Friday. Snow levels likely begin around 4,000
ft in the Cascades, but may fluctuate higher in the warm sector
before lowering again. So while confidence is fairly high that
many of the higher Cascade elevations will see snow, confidence on
impactful amounts at pass levels (especially Stevens) is a bit
lower.

Saturday then brings the arrival of a deep plume of moisture that
will move into the region. This moist and mild system will lead
to abundant rainfall and rises on many rivers, though confidence
in the details of precisely where the highest rainfall will be
focused and the duration of heavy rain remain lower. At this
point, expect snow levels to climb well above pass level Saturday
along with gusty winds especially near the coast. Temperatures
will likely warm into the 50s for the weekend as a result, with
overnight lows likely remaining in the 40s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Ensembles remain in
reasonably good agreement that the bulk of the moisture associated
with the atmospheric river will slide south into Oregon on Sunday,
for a decrease in precipitation over Western Washington, but given
the abundant rain and high snow levels, area rivers may continue
running high - see hydrology section for further details. Another
day of rain may return Monday with another impulse lifting
moisture back into the area, but there remains some suggestion of
drier conditions late Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will
generally trend near normals through the long term period. Cullen

&&

.AVIATION...An upper level trough passing through western
Washington this morning will maintain a cool and showery air mass.
Ceilings are a mixed bag with pockets of MVFR conditions. Gusty S/SW
winds to 20-30kt will also continue this morning before easing in
the afternoon. Expect drier conditions this afternoon and evening as
the trough exits east and high pressure builds inland. However, with
a moist low level air mass in place, will likely see a return of
MVFR conditions tonight into Friday morning. 33/Kristell

KSEA...Showers remain in the vicinity this morning with gusty S
winds to 30kt and MVFR cigs. Ceilings will linger near 3000
through this afternoon with winds easing. 33

&&

.MARINE...Strong onshore flow continues across western WA today as
a system passes through - Gale Warnings and Small Craft Advisories
remain in effect. Meanwhile, seas remain high at 14-19 ft. Both
winds and seas will subside tonight (although seas will still be
around 10-13 ft). Another vigorous Pacific frontal system will
bring gales on Friday with more blustery winds expected over the
weekend, thus keeping the region's weather active. 33/Kristell

&&

.HYDROLOGY...The Skokomish River is just above flood stage at
Potlatch. It will fall this afternoon through tonight and then
rise again with the next front Friday afternoon and night. A
rather wet front will arrive over the weekend and the river is
likely to flood again with that heavy rain.

Additional river flooding is possible this weekend due to
the warm and mild weather system that will arrive around Saturday.
The combination of rising snow levels and very heavy rain will
increase the potential for at least minor flooding on several
rivers and for moderate flooding on the Skokomish. An hydro
outlook (ESF) has been issued to discuss this potential in more
detail. Continue to monitor the forecast this week as the
details are refined.
