.SYNOPSIS...
Blustery winds will diminish as high pressure builds into New
England and wedges down east of the mountains tomorrow. A storm
system will then move out of the deep south and bring wintry
precipitation to the Appalachians and central mid Atlantic
region with significant accumulations of snow and ice possible,
mainly north of route 460. Snow showers will linger in the
mountains on Thursday before high pressure brings fair weather
back to the area for the end of the workweek.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 930 PM EST Monday...
The late evening update will reflect primarily a tweak of hourly
temperatures, dew points, and sky cover to reflect the latest
observations and expected trends into early Tuesday morning.
Based upon radar trends and surface observations, have removed
mention of any additional isolated light rain/snow showers
across the mountains for the remainder of the night.
As of 645 PM EST Monday...
Areas east of the Blue Ridge have trended clear, and remain that
way through the night. Cloud cover over the mountains is slowly
eroding from east to west. Some very isolated rain/snow showers
continue, but these are expected to dissipate by around
midnight. Have updated the forecast to reflect the latest trend
of cloud cover and small chances of precipitation in the west.
Also, have tweaked hourly temperature, dew point, wind
speed/gusts, and sky cover to reflect the latest observations
and expected trends through the evening.
As of 130 PM EST Monday...
Significant precipitation has exited the region to the east,
leaving us with improving conditions east of the Blue Ridge. To
the west, shallow moisture in the boundary layer is keeping
clouds with a few lingering sprinkles/flurries in the mountains.
Indications are that the clouds will hang tough through tonight
in the mountains with lingering precipitation diminishing by
Midnight. Conditions improve Tuesday morning with fair weather
through the afternoon.
Winds will become gusty this afternoon and remain gusty into
this evening before diminishing overnight.
Temperatures will continue running well below normal with lows
in the upper 20s east of the Ridge, generally low/mid 20s to
the west. Highs tomorrow low/mid 40s east, upper 30s/around 40
west.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 425 AM EST Monday...
Travel impacts expected with a wintry mix Wednesday & Thursday.
High pressure will firmly wedge against the eastern slopes of the
Blue Ridge on Tuesday night. The resultant northeast flow will send
temperatures below freezing, so the coldest MOS guidance was used to
account for this cold air advection even though clouds will increase
throughout the night. Meanwhile, two separate areas of low pressure,
one reaching the Ohio River Valley with the other one crossing from
the Gulf Coast toward the North Carolina coast, will set up a Miller
B winter storm over the Mid Atlantic by Wednesday morning.
Most of the precipitation will start as a mix of snow and sleet, but
the NAM shows a good warm nose at 850 mb with temperatures above
freezing that will penetrate northward above the shallow cold wedge
at the surface. This warm nose will transition the precipitation
types more toward freezing rain by midday along and east of the Blue
Ridge, but a snow and sleet mix could persist west of the Blue Ridge
for most of the day. There still remains a considerable amount of
uncertainty regarding exactly where the gradient of the various
precipitation types will set up along with the total QPF amounts
among the various models and their ensembles. However, confidence is
increasing for a winter storm with significant impacts from
snow, sleet, and ice on Wednesday.
Once this winter storm exits to the northeast by Wednesday night,
the upslope snow showers should crank up along and west of a line
from Boone to Lewisburg as winds turn toward the northwest and
become breezy. The NAM, GFS, and ECMWF models depict this upslope
activity persisting through Thursday. Meanwhile, dry conditions
should ensue across the Piedmont. The colder side of MOS guidance
was favored for temperatures on Thursday and Thursday night due to
the ongoing cold air advection from northwest flow throughout the
entire area and the expected snow cover west of the Blue Ridge.
Eventually, the upslope snow showers and the breezy winds should
subside late on Thursday night as high pressure builds overhead.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 145 PM EST Monday..
Ensemble guidance is consistent with advertising a progressive long
wave pattern through early next week. An upper trof axis along the
East Coast will slide east into the Atlantic ocean Friday. This will
allow the upper ridge and high pressure will build east into our
region. The high center will be located overhead Friday night and
move southeast Saturday into Saturday night. Some moisture ahead of
an approaching front may result in snow showers mainly in the west
late Saturday night. The cold front will move through our area
Sunday into Sunday night with the potential for another round of
wintry weather. There is a chance for rain and snow showers with the
temperature profiles projected. Drier weather expected Monday into
Monday night. Tuesday forecast is uncertain with the possibility of
coastal low genesis with location and track. Time will fill in the
exact details in weather forecast during the long term.
Temperatures during the period will be near normal.

.AVIATION /10Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 100 AM EST Tuesday...
Surface observations indicate MVFR ceilings across southeast
West Virginia and far western Virginia this morning resulting
from upslope along the local ridges in the northwesterly
windflow. VFR conditions are observed further east this morning.
As the night progresses, winds will shift more northerly as high
pressure drifts east across the upper Great Lakes. The gradual
wind shift will allow the upslope clouds to gradually scatter by
around dawn.
VFR conditions are expected to then persist areawide through
the remainder of the 15/06Z TAF period under passing mid/high
clouds. Winds will continue to shift more northeasterly to
easterly as the day progresses as high pressure builds southward
along the eastern face of the Appalachians.
Clouds will increase/lower during the late evening hours of
Tuesday/early Wednesday as the next storm system approaches from
the southwest.
Extended Aviation Discussion...
A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain, as well as sub-VFR
flight conditions, will affect the southern mid-Atlantic during
the pre-dawn through afternoon hours of Wednesday, resulting in
periods of moderate to severe mixed/clear icing. Sub-VFR may
linger into Thursday in the mountains. Expect VFR Friday.
