.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will pass off the east coast this evening.
A second trough of low pressure will pass across the region
early Friday. The net result will be much colder weather for
Friday and Saturday with the potential for mountain snow
showers and flurries early Friday. Widespread rain is likely for
Sunday as low pressure approaches from the southwest.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 650 PM EDT Thursday...

Our early evening update will reflect primarily just minor
adjustments to the hourly grids for temperature, dew point,
wind/gusts, and sky cover to better reflect the latest
observations and expected trends through rest of the evening.
Have also slowed down the arrival of the onset of the
precipitation across parts of southeast West Virginia by a few
hours based upon the latest radar trends and meso-scale model
solutions.

As of 300 PM EDT Thursday...

Cold front has moved east of the mountains and should pass off
the East Coast this evening. In its wake...blustery west winds
and clear skies. A strong upper level disturbance will pass
across the Ohio Valley tonight, then across the northern Mid-
Atlantic early Friday. The associated surface trough will bring
a surge of cold air, along with mountain snow showers and
flurries. Another round of strong wind is also anticipated and
foresee another day of windy conditions with the need for wind
advisories across the higher terrain and just lee of the Blue
Ridge. The airmass behind the trough is very dry and expect
dewpoints to fall into the teens to lower 20s. This will result
in an excellent drying day and potential need for a fire danger
statement for areas east of the Blue Ridge where strong wind and
very low RH will couple to promote elevated fire weather
conditions. The recent rain and green-up of the grass should
help mitigate this threat, but leaf litter and brush may still
dry out enough during the afternoon to pose a fire concern.

Temperatures will stair step down. The first step behind today's
cold front, returning temperatures to seasonal normals
overnight, then another step down Friday behind the passage of
the upper trough with highs Friday 10 to 15 degrees below normal
with 40s in the mountains, even some 30s above 4000 ft, to 50s
east.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM EDT Thursday...

NW winds diminish Friday night as high pressure settles overhead. This
will allow for effective cooling going into Saturday morning. Most
of the west will drop below freezing while parts of the east will
bet teetering at the freezing mark. That said, with the growing
season started, widespread frost will be of concern.

After the cool start saturday, high pressure gradually moves
eastward. This starts to set us up into more SW flow and get to
warming things up/increasing dew points slowly. All the while, skies
remain clear. Saturday night, southerly flow and increasing clouds
will prevent temperatures from cooling much as we start to usher in
our next system.

An upper level low that has remained in the SW U.S. will be making
its way into the region Sunday. This system is definitely the focus
of this part of the forecast. While widespread severe seems likely
across parts of the southeastern U.S., confidence is still low on
coverage for storms here. It is possible that wedging could help
prevent widespread storm coverage. At the same time, 50-60kt 850
winds could easily break the wedge down. While instability does not
look high, especially not like what is being shown to the south, the
combo of modest instability and good dynamics raises concerns,
especially for areas east of the foothills.

On top of the severe threat also comes the threat of flooding. Right
now, PWATS do not look impressive. However, with possible deep
convection and good lapse rates projected along the Blue Ridge,
guidance is suggesting that potentially 1-3" of rain could fall
across the entire area. This initially raises flash flooding
concerns, especially for the west in more diverse terrain. Later on,
as will be discussed, river flooding could become of concern.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Thursday...

Ensemble guidance is consistent with developing a large full latitude
trof that will dominate much of the US east of the Rockies for the
better art of next week. The result will be unsettled and blustery
conditions with temperatures running well below normal
through Thursday.

While the heavy rainfall associated with the strong cold front
extending from a very deep surface low over the Great Lakes will be
ending early on Monday, ensemble river forecasts indicate that there may
be enough runoff to bring some mainstem rivers into flood, and expect
most streams and creeks will be running near or exceeding bankfull
through Monday afternoon.

Short wave energy moving around the large upper trof will bring a
chance of rain showers to the region each day, with even some snow
showers possible at the higher elevations. Lingering warmth on Monday
will vanish quickly as temperatures drop with readings generally 5 to
10 degrees below normal. The coldest day of the period looks to be
Wednesday with highs only in the upper 50s east of the Blue Ridge, mid
40s/around 50 to the west. Lows will generally be in the upper
30s/lower 40s east, low/mid 30s west.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 630 PM EDT Thursday...

VFR conditions prevail across the region along with very gusty
northwest winds, especially across the mountains. These winds
will begin to decline in speeds after sunset, but have a
resurgence is speeds and gusts just prior to daybreak Friday.
These windier conditions will continue through Friday.

A system passing to our north tonight will help bring moisture
in the form of MVFR ceilings and some scattered rain/snow
showers to the mountains. This will mainly impact southeast West
Virginia, neighboring counties of southwest Virginia, and south
into the Northern Mountains of North Carolina. Conditions across
this area will improve to VFR after sunrise Friday. East of the
crest of the Blue Ridge, VFR conditions are expected for the
duration of the valid TAF forecast period, ending 00Z
Saturday/8PM Friday.

Confidence in the above aviation scenario is high.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

Winds subside Friday night. VFR expected Friday night through
Saturday night. A storm system will approach from the southwest
Sunday with deteriorating aviation conditions with sub-VFR
ceilings and widespread rain expected Sunday afternoon into
early Monday. A risk for strong to severe thunderstorms exists
Sunday afternoon and evening across the Carolinas and southeast
States. There is a chance this threat could reach as far north
as the piedmont which may impact Danville (KDAN).
