Brief high pressure today, then a complex storm system brings a
mixed bag of wintry precipitation Wednesday and Wednesday
night.

As of 130 AM Tuesday...
Low ceilings continuing to linger across the mountainous
counties should generally scatter out by late this morning.
Otherwise, high clouds will be quickly streaming into the area
out ahead of the next system.
High pressure in control today, will provide dry, but cool
conditions. Towards the end of the forecast period, moisture
associated with upper shortwave trough and surface low will
start to move into southern and eastern zones. Precipitation
across southwest VA and southern WV looks to start out as a
wintry mix including the possibility of sleet, snow, and maybe
even a rain/snow mix, with any precipitation that develops along
eastern slopes mainly in the form of snow through 11Z.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 358 PM Monday...
A complex storm system to deal with midweek. Timing is a bit
slower this go around but precip should advance northeastward
into the Tug Fork around dawn Wednesday and then quickly
overtake the entire region Wednesday morning. It should begin
as snow pretty much everywhere, but transition to rain from
south to north during the day in the lowlands. Some freezing
rain will be possible in our southwest Virginia and southern
West Virginia counties up into the central mountains Wednesday
morning, but snow should remain the dominant precip type in the
central and northern mountains through Wednesday night.
The Winter Storm Watch likely extends too far west and southwest
based on the latest snow/ice forecast. But, we could see snow
and ice impacts Wednesday morning and I hate to cancel the watch
only for an advisory to be issued later on so will leave it as
is for now.
Snow accumulations should range from an inch or less in the
lowlands ranging up to 2 to 3 inches up I-79 towards
Clarksburg. In the mountains, several inches of snow still
appear likely with up to 10 inches possible in the higher
elevations of Randolph and Pocahontas Counties.
Ice accumulations are problematic but could see a couple tenths
of an inch of freezing rain in the climatologically favored
eastern Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming and McDowell Counties.
Elsewhere, little if any ice accumulation is anticipated.
The upper trough hangs back over our region Wednesday night
into Thursday and expect rain/snow to taper off but linger into
the day on Thursday. Model time/heights also hint that we may
lose ice in the clouds at times, which would cause some areas
of freezing rain/drizzle where surface temps are below freezing.

Some residual patchy light rain and snow may persist into
Thursday night before high pressure finally builds in on Friday.
Models then show the next system moving in as early as Saturday
evening, bringing a chance of rain/snow into Sunday before

below normal into the weekend, then moderate to near normal
values by Monday.
