Precipitation shield moving into southern and central Kentucky
this evening. Thickening clouds will prevent temperatures from
falling much more this evening with Elkins already bouncing. Forecast
on track, so only minor changes this evening.
As of 1222 PM Sunday...
A strong, 130KT, H250 southern stream jet max is arching north into
the region at this hour with jet cirrus progressively building into
the region from south to north. Tonight, this feature progresses to
the east putting us in the favorable right rear quadrant for
synoptic ascent, as well as briefly opening the taps on Gulf
moisture with precipitable water values ballooning to near 1 inch,
generally above 90th percentile values for this time of the year.
This will yield periods of light to moderate rain through much of
the overnight, continuing into Monday morning with rainfall
accumulations of between a half an inch for much of the Lowlands and
1 inch for the higher terrain by daybreak. Strengthening
southern flow/warm air advection coupled with increasing
clouds/rain overnight will keep temperatures fairly steady after
any initial radiational cooling early this evening.
May see a bit of a lull in steadier rainfall Monday morning through
midday as weak descent behind the aforementioned synoptic feature and
associated dry slot moves over the region. Despite descent in place,
forecast soundings still reveal cloud-top temperatures touching -10C
supporting ice nucleation, so would expect mainly continued rain
rather than a switch to drizzle.
Will see renewed precipitation chances spreading from northwest to
southeast Monday afternoon into the evening hours as flow switches
around to the northwest/west opening up a fetch of moisture off the
Upper Great Lakes as well as bringing in colder air. This yields a
switch to snow for most locations by Monday evening. Snow
accumulations through the end of the near term are expected to be
minimal with a combination of marginal air surface temperatures and
warm ground temperatures limiting initial accumulations to grassy
and elevated surfaces.
Surface temperatures will struggle to get away from morning highs in
the lower to mid 40s for most locations Monday with a combination of
morning rain and increasing cold air advection in the afternoon.
This will be most noticeable across SE OH and W WV and less noticeable
across our northeastern counties where the cold air arrives last.
Winds remain light tonight, becoming breezy (gusts 20 to 30 mph
across the lowlands, 30 to 35 mph in the mountains) from the
northwest as colder air begins to arrive in the region during the
day Monday.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 240 PM Sunday...
ACCUMULATING SNOW POSSIBLE MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY...
The changeover to snow will be completed Monday evening. Some
modest rates in the evening across southeast Ohio in departing
deformation axis, otherwise rates will increase a bit overnight
into Tuesday morning farther east as the upper low tracks
northeast across the area. Given relatively slow drop in surface
temperatures Monday night in the lowlands, uncertainty remains
regarding how much accumulation is realized by Tuesday morning.
This is particularly true across the Tri-State region where some
of the hi res models continue to show amounts less than an
inch. The upper level low will move northward away from the area
as the day progresses with the steady accumulating snow
becoming confined to northern lowland counties and the
mountains. Additional light accumulation is forecast especially
across northern counties. Temperatures will struggle to rise
much during the day and believe the guidance is still a bit too
warm.
Snow will linger Tuesday evening across the north as a piece of
energy pivots across the upper OH Valley with additional light
accumulation, primarily across the northern mountains. Dry air
will quickly advect in from the southwest after midnight which
will end the snow and allow for some clearing.
Given the uncertainty with amounts across the lowlands and this
being a Monday night/Tuesday event I have held off on any
headlines with this package. Having said that, the northern
mountains and southeast OH account for the highest confidence
and will likely need a headline with the next shift. And even
though the low confidence areas in the lowlands may not meet
criteria, an advisory may be needed to account for Tuesday
morning travel impacts.
Temperatures were nudged a bit below guidance Wednesday despite
amply sunshine to account for where the greatest snow depth is
anticipated.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1230 PM Sunday...
Weak surface high moves overhead Wednesday night which will set
the stage for a rather cold night. I kept the idea from the
previous shift of undercutting even the lowest guidance where
snow should still be on the ground, especially in the sheltered
hollows and outlying locales. Some cirrus may spread into the
area late but probably will not be thick enough to affect
temperature.
Clouds will increase Thursday ahead of an approaching elongated positively
tilted trof. Weak low level WAA will aid in warmer day compared
to Wednesday. The forecast becomes a bit murky heading into
Thursday night and Friday amid continued model run to run
variability. The struggle seems to be tied to how the mean
longwave trof across southeastern Canada interacts with the
aforementioned elongated s/w trof ejecting out of the
southwestern US. Given the timing discrepancies of these two
features, we may not see a stable solution for a few more days.
As such, there was little if any modification to NBM grids
Thursday night into the weekend.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 1201 AM Monday...
Deteriorating flight rules overnight with prolonged poor flight
rules expected for Monday into Monday night.
The first several hours of the 06z TAF period should result in
a quick transition from VFR to low-end MVFR, to even IFR, as a
large rain shield spreads northeast across the entire region.
Associated sfc low is prog to ride NE along/just west of the
spine of the WV Appalachians towards sunrise. Result will be
continued widespread RA for all aerodromes through the morning
with IFR CIGs likely to prevail most of the morning across
KCRW/KHTS/KPKB/KBKW with somewhat better CIGs of MVFR levels for
KCKB/KEKN.
Sfc low shifts NE away from the area by late morning with CAA
developing in its wake...resulting in continued poor flight
rules along with -RADZ for the afternoon. Airmass becomes cold
enough for -SN to develop from west to east by late afternoon
and especially during the evening. Poor VSBYs/CIGs likely for
Monday evening, areawide.
ENErly sfc winds 5 to 10 kts overnight for most aerodromes,
exception being KBKW where gusty SErly sfc winds expected. VRB
wind direction around sunrise as sfc low moves across, followed
by Wrly sfc winds late morning through the rest of the TAF
period, becoming gusty at times.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: Medium.
ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Timing of onset of IFR or worse flight
rules overnight may differ from TAFs. Prolonged IFR during the
day Monday may be a little too pessimistic.
