.SYNOPSIS...
Strong storm system approaches and crosses today and tonight.
Rain today switches to snow tonight with some accumulations
expected. Another disturbance brings more snow late-week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 935 AM Wednesday...

Adjusted temperatures today based on current obs and trends.
This didn't really make a big difference on precip type as we
transition to snow late today. Will be taking a close look at
snow amounts with the system tonight. Recent model runs continue
to indicate amounts across the northern mountains may need to be
increased. So current plan is to trend that way with the next
update. Then will see how zone averages calculate out before
making any changes to winter headlines.

As of 332 AM Wednesday...

...WINTER WEATHER RETURNS TO THE AREA TONIGHT...

The CWA currently resides in a quasi-WAA regime, although
significant moisture advection is currently lacking at the
moment. A sfc front just west of the CWA will gradually push
east during the day, marking the beginning of significant
weather changes for our area. Isolated showers this morning
should gradually increase in coverage by late morning, mainly
across the western half of the CWA where moisture depth and lift
are prog to be the greatest. Precip coverage should rapidly
blossom from west to east beginning midday and continuing
through the afternoon as the sfc front pushes east and as large
scale lift dramatically increases due to a powerful H5 trough
swinging towards a negative tilt across the Ohio and TN River
Valleys. This will allow for a large eastward moving rain shield
to encompass most of the CWA this afternoon. Rain will
generally be light to moderate, but should increase in
intensity during the afternoon across the eastern half of the
CWA as synoptic lift increases (aided by some orographic lift
as well). If enough forcing can occur, then a few rumbles of
thunder may occur across primarily our eastern fringe of
counties where MUCAPE values of 300 to 500 j/kg are prog to
exist.

The front will shift east this evening followed by the H85 front
and shortly thereafter by the parent mid level trough axis.
Once this occurs, significant cold air advection will initiate
with nearly the entire thermal profile quickly cooling this
evening. This should lead to a quick transition from rain to
snow across the mountains early in the evening. It is also
during this time where some rather high omega values are prog to
exist across the NE mountains. This will likely allow for a
window during this evening where some bursts of heavy snow
could occur. A few inches of snow in only a few areas are
currently forecast to fall this evening across the NE mountains
with snowfall intensity lessening by late evening as the best
forcing shifts east of the region. However, additional light to
at times moderate snow will be common during the remainder of
the night. 3 to 5 inches of accumulation are expected to occur
tonight across our higher mountainous counties. As such, and
after coordinating with surrounding WFOs, a Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for tonight into Thursday morning. In
addition to the snow, increasing wind with the cold air
advection will result in areas of blowing snow and very poor
visibilities at times.

Elsewhere, across the Low-lands...light rain early this evening
will transition more to showery-like coverage...and should
transition from rain to snow during the mid/late evening hours
(although it may occur sooner). Sfc temps will take longer to
fall to below freezing across these areas with snow amounts
tonight generally confined to non-pavement surfaces...and
generally around an inch or less. However, some bands or even
squalls of snow may occur mid/late evening and the first part of
the overnight hours, which could result in isolated higher
amounts. For areas from Fayette County southward to Dickenson
Co...a couple of inches of snow may occur on average tonight
where some steady light snow should be more prolonged. If
confidence increases that snow amounts could become
higher...then a Winter Weather Advisory may be expanded to this
area later today.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 332 AM Wednesday...

Snow showers become increasingly confined to the mountains through
the late morning Thursday as the upper level trough pivots northeast
out of the area with perhaps another inch or two of accumulation
there after daybreak. Would expect at least some flurries to
redevelop over the Lowlands in the afternoon with insolation
filtered through a stratocumulus deck and cold air aloft setting up
some modest surface based instability. Do not think we'll be able to
squeeze out anything measurable from this liquid-wise, and despite a
rather high ratio snow, aforementioned insolation and will keep any
additional snow from accumulating at the surface.

Brisk conditions continue through the day Thursday with highs for
the Lowlands topping out in the mid 30s and winds gusting 25 to 30
mph through the early afternoon. In the mountains it will be a bit
more blustery with highs in the lower 20s, winds gusting up to near
40 mph and wind chill values struggling to make it out of the
single digits.

Decent mixing overnight Thursday will keep lows mainly in the middle
20s, setting up a rather critical timing window of a weak
disturbance embedded in northwesterly flow approaching Friday
morning. 06Z GFS is the fastest with this feature spreading
precipitation associated with warm air advection into our western
counties by daybreak Friday while the 06Z NAM/00Z EPS consensus is a
few hours slower. The slower solution would yield little if any
accumulating snow on impactful surfaces in the morning once the
filtered power of the Sun kicks in, while the faster solution could
allow for some very light accumulations prior to about 9 am. Have
leaned toward the slower solution for now with minimal snow
accumulations eastern Kentucky and southeastern Ohio Counties Friday
morning, but will likely see some fluctuation in these values over
the next couple cycles depending on the eventual solution.

Flow turns northwesterly Friday evening, with the effective surface
cold front sinking south out of the forecast area leaving only the
H85 boundary for a late arriving northern stream wind max to
interact with. This should yield a fairly narrow corridor of renewed
snowfall Friday evening, mainly along the Cumberland/Allegheny
mountains. With loss of surface heating, could see some minor
accumulations of an inch or two before the H85 front sinks south out
of the area through Saturday morning. In our northern WV mountains
snow showers could linger a little longer as a relatively weak lake
moisture fetch briefly sets up before flow turns more west-
northwesterly.

Aside from any lingering mountain snow showers mentioned above
Saturday will be a dry and chilly day.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 332 AM Wednesday...

Looking at a dry start to the week as upper level ridging builds
into the area. On Monday, models hint at a shortwave trough moving
through. This, along with WAA, will likely increase moisture and
precipitation chances throughout the day. Precipitation chances are
expected to continue increasing through the end of the period as
flow turns southerly and surface level low pressure moves northeast
across the area.

With the transport of warm air into the area, temperatures are
expected to begin slightly above normal then continue to warm
through the end of the long term period.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1255 PM Wednesday...

Approaching storm system will bring deteriorating flight
conditions through the remainder of the day. Ceilings should
gradually drop into MVFR and then IFR by this evening at most
sites. MVFR to IFR visibilities also expected as rain moves in
from the west. Did not include any thunder mention, but cannot
rule a rumble or two across the far east late this afternoon or
this evening. Temperatures drop quickly after 00Z, so expecting
a changeover to snow, with periods of IFR overnight. Most
prolonged, widespread IFR expected across the mountains.
Elsewhere, went with PROB30 IFR coding with some uncertainty on
timing and intensity of snow. Conditions will gradually improve
from west to east on Thursday, with lingering upslope snow
showers across the northern mountains.

Winds will increase this evening into tonight, with gusts of
15-25kts out of the west to northwest lingering through much of
Thursday.
