.SYNOPSIS...
Brief high pressure with drier conditions until this afternoon
when another system brings rain into Thursday. Snow showers /
flurries in its wake into Friday. Weekend starts cold / dry.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 930 AM Wednesday...

Made a few adjustments to temperatures for today based on
current observations and latest guidance, implying a decrease in
hourly afternoon highs compared to previous expectations. Opted
to hold off on changing temperatures for the late afternoon time
frame for now, but will monitor the progression of the warm
front to see if highs in the low 50s are feasible in the
southern coalfields and up into the Charleston metro area.
Otherwise, rest of the forecast remains in good shape this
morning.

As of 230 AM Wednesday...

The period starts off relatively quiet before the next storm
system with temperatures starting off around mid to upper 30's
this morning with a cloudy sky. Warm air advection from the
southwest will lift temperatures to the mid/upper 40's and even
the low 50's in the south-central lowlands. An inverted trough
will slide north over the area this afternoon increasing rain
chances early on from the south spreading north. Some light snow
and/or a mix may make its way to the highest elevations or cold
spots for the northeast mountainous area as showers spread
north through the afternoon, however accumulations would be
little to none.

Once that feature lifts north the warm sector will enhance more
showers due to a warm frontal boundary associated with the
parent low to the west. The warm front will give way to the
systems cold front which will come from the west and traverse
east, spreading moderate to heavy showers and a possible
thunderstorm or two overnight, when instability is at its
strongest. Convective showers can bring about flash flooding
along with any prolonged moderate to heavy rain associated with
frontal passage. With saturated soils all rain will be mainly
runoff into rivers, creeks and streams. The flash flood watch is
is effect from 4pm to 10am Thursday and unfortunately the bulk
of the rainfall will be at night, making water on roadways very
hazardous due to lack of visibility, so be careful.

The front kicks out east to the mountains at the end of this
forecast period although showers will be lingering around the
area mainly confined to the mountains. Winds will generally be
on the weak side although pick up some in response to cold
frontal in the late afternoon with maybe some gusts in the low
teens with stronger (below advisory criteria) gusts in the
higher elevations through Thursday morning when frontal passage
finally occurs.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 455 AM Wednesday...

A cold front crosses the central Appalachians Thursday morning,
as a surface low races through the northeastern states. The
right rear entrance region of a strong jet stream associated
with this system, that arcs northeastward from the area up
through the St. Lawrence River Valley, contributes to lift
provided by the front. Acting on PW values up around an inch
ahead of the front, near the climatological maxima for this area
this time of year, drawn up by strong moisture transport ahead
of the front, ongoing showers are likely to be heavy in and just
west of the the mountains first thing Thursday morning.

The cold front, just east of the Ohio River first thing
Thursday morning, moves quickly east in response to the low
pressure center having gone by, and clears the mountains by
noon. This will limit additional rainfall amounts Thursday
morning, with generally a quarter to half inch additional
rainfall forecast. Paper thin low level CAPE, or just the mixed
layer, could help bring down some of the 50-60 kts of flow aloft
in the heavier showers first thing Thursday morning. Strong
gusts are also likely to mix through as the front takes out the
shallow prefrontal inversion.

In the wake of the front, colder air gradually filters in, mid
and upper level moisture quickly shifts east, but moisture
beneath the inversion is likely to keep stratocu around, along
with a few showers or sprinkles. Lack of ice crystal in cloud
should preclude a transition to snow showers until late
Thursday, but progressively colder air and upslope flow should
support snow showers in and near the mountains late Thursday
through Thursday night, and into Friday, with snow showers
briefly possible over the middle Ohio Valley Thursday evening.

Snowfall accumulations will be limited to areas in and near the
mountains, where an inch or two is possible, mainly Thursday
night over higher terrain.

High pressure representing the center of a much colder air mass
builds in on Friday, and settles in to set up a clear, calm and
cold Friday night. The high then gives way to southwest flow as
it exits Saturday and Saturday night, taking out the cold air.
An upper level short wave trough and weak warm advection are
likely to result in increasing mid and high cloud.

Central guidance temperatures reflect gradual cooling behind
the front Thursday and Thursday night, and little recovery
Friday even as the moisture beneath the inversion mixes out.
Temperatures reach their nadir early Saturday morning, followed
by moderation, as the high slides east.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 455 AM Wednesday...

Any upper level short wave trough crosses Sunday, with little
effects aside from mid and high cloud, as, without much of a
southern moisture connection, moisture will not be squeezed out
any further this far south. In its wake, ridging surface and
aloft Sunday night into Monday will bring a welcome dry and
mild start to the new work week.

Models are fairly well converged on a somewhat more highly
amplified system bringing showers to the area on Tuesday,
before the associated cold front crosses Tuesday night.
Somewhat colder and drier air filters in on Wednesday, as high
pressure of polar / pacific origin builds toward the area.

Central guidance reflects temperatures climbing further above
normal early next week, before dropping back a bit midweek,
behind the cold front.

.AVIATION /14Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 645 AM Wednesday...

This morning there may be a patch or two of fog that lingers
around the sites although they would not affect prevailing VIS
for too long. Otherwise, terminals should be MVFR to VFR for the
rest of the morning as a low level deck around 030FT clears
out. A low pressure system to the southwest will spread rain
showers in from the south to north this afternoon bringing back
MVFR CIGs. This will start to affect terminals with lower VIS
(MVFR) through the afternoon.

As an inverted trough pushes in from the west terminals to the
north the area will see lower restrictions to VIS in heavier
showers (IFR) with lower CIGs in the later afternoon/evening
(borderline IFR). Winds will generally be light picking up out
of the southeast with gusts in the low teens and higher gusts in
the mountains (just below wind advisory criteria). With the
approach of the system to the west, wind shear can be expected
with this system in the early evening through tonight with
40-50KT at flight level 020FT which are mentioned in the TAFs.

As the cold front associated with the parent low moves thru
overnight VIS/CIGs can become lower in convective showers,
however they will be temporary. The front kicks out sometime
late Thursday morning with CIGs starting to rebound and
progressively lift throughout the day. Winds will still be
strong aloft, however will start to subside with frontal
passage.

Area rivers, creeks and streams will continue to run high from
recent rainfall. An additional 1 to 1.5 inches of rainfall, with
localized higher amounts are expected through Thursday. Minor
flooding will continue to be possible, particularly in low lying or
flood prone areas.
