High pressure continues in control thru tonight. Intense low
pressure system crosses Sunday night, pulling a strong cold front
through Monday morning. Cooler with weak systems next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 720 AM Sunday...

Added slights across the CWA for a few hours given the isolated
showers that have popped up this morning

As of 229 AM Sunday...

Surface high pressure to our east will allow for south to southwest
flow to develop starting this morning. Pressure gradient tightens up
as a sfc low pressure system moves from the central plains,
northeast into the Great Lakes Region through tonight. This low
pressure will lift a warm front increasing chances for rain showers
tonight.

Models are in some agreement with a cold front timing reaching the
KY/WV/OH Tristate area by 15Z Monday. This cold front will have very
strong gusty winds, perhaps 40 to 50 knots according to the
strongest NAM's 290K isentropic analysis. Numerous showers and
scattered thunderstorms will accompany this front. Models suggest a
secondary cold front sweeps across just behind the first one.
Therefore, expect strong gusty winds to continue behind these fronts
later on Monday. A High Wind Watch is in effect for the entire area
starting at 10Z Monday.

Expect temperatures to be considerably warmer than normal under
strong south to southwest flow through the period. A non-diurnal
trend is expected tonight with lowest temperatures early
tonight.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 320 AM Sunday...

Strong low level warm air advection ahead of the approaching
cold front Monday morning should yield daytime highs right
around daybreak for most. Still a big question as to how
pristine some modestly cooler air aloft associated with
approaching negatively tilted mid-level wave can remain in the
wake of upstream convection as warm moist air differentially
advects beneath it in our neighborhood. NAM12 appears to be the
worst case scenario with surface temperatures in the upper 60s
with a bulk of upstream convection displaced well north of the
remainder of guidance along the Lower Ohio Valley resulting in
the most convective instability (perhaps up to 1000J/kg MLCAPE)
generated. Have largely discounted this solution in favor of an
EC/GFS generating significant upstream convective precipitation
producing minimal MLCAPE over us, but this will certainly be
something to keep an eye on over the next few cycles as we get
into range of more of the CAMs. Given extremely strong kinematic
fields, the presence of anything more than minimal convective
instability could yield all severe hazards. The Storm Prediction
Center has reduced all of our area except Eastern Kentucky to a
marginal risk which generally reflects this thinking.

Even in the absence conditional instability, or perhaps much
precipitation at all along the front, should see at least a few
hour window along and behind the cold front with high end
advisory/low end warning level winds capable of downing trees.
Will maintain the current High Wind Watch after collaboration
with neighbors, given uncertainty in intensity of any potential
squall line that would be more appropriately covered with severe
thunderstorm warnings, but would probably lean toward a low
end, more impact based High Wind Warning given the current
forecast. This decision will be left up to the day shift.

Additional hydro concerns appear unlikely with any precipitation
that does materialize along the front given fast storm motions with
little if any training potential.

Low level cold air advection quickly ends any surface based
thunderstorm threat behind the cold front by late Monday morning,
with gusty westerly winds continue as a secondary cold push
arrives in the late morning/early afternoon. Winds begin to
taper down by late afternoon, becoming light overnight.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 320 AM Sunday...

Relatively quieter weather is expected through a bulk of the
extended period with generally much weaker systems bringing
precipitation chances Tuesday night into Wednesday, Wednesday
night into Thursday, and Friday into the weekend. Temperatures
will be much cooler with morning lows mainly in the 30s through
Friday with daytime highs in the mid to upper 50s. Could see a
few flakes with anything moving through during the overnights,
especially in the mountains, but not looking at any significant
snow accumulations at this time. If you still have some cold
sensitive plants waiting in seed starting trays, may want to
hold off through next weekend to get by these below normal
temperatures.

.AVIATION /11Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 600 AM Sunday...

South to southwest flow develops ahead of an approaching low
pressure system. Flow aloft will increase pushing a weak warm
front around 18Z, and a stronger warm front by 00Z this evening.

As the low pressure system gets closer, the pressure gradient
will tighten up increasing winds aloft. Winds will become south
southwest, gradually increasing and advecting abundant moisture
needed to feed showers and storms. MVFR/IFR conditions can be
expected along the heavier showers.

By 12Z Monday, a series of cold fronts will cross the area from
west to east accompanied by numerous showers and scattered
thunderstorms. Expect conditions to deteriorate to IFR along
strong convection tonight into Monday. Models show ample deep
layer shear and weak bouyancy during this time frame. The NAM
shows around 40 to 50 knots reaching the ground in 209K
isentropic surface by Monday 15Z. Bulk shear in the first 2,000
feet increases to 40 to 50 knots by 03Z Monday suggesting
possible low level wind shear assuming lower atmosphere
decouples with lighter sfc winds. Coded LLWS at HTS and BKW for
now near the end of the period. Winds could be significantly
strong along cold fronts mainly across the higher elevations.
LLWS will be minimized as long as gusty surface flow develops.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 12Z MONDAY...

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: High.

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Gusty winds may vary today, depending upon
mixing of higher momentum aloft to the surface. This may also
impact the degree of low level wind shear later tonight.
