What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this freeze warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Charleston, WV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this freeze warning went out at May 10, 3:12 AM EDT, 0 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, May 10, 3:12 AM EDT, 0 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Charleston WV
312 AM EDT Sun May 10 2020

.SYNOPSIS...
Cold front with rain showers and isolated thunderstorms Sunday.
High pressure Tuesday and Wednesday. Warm front Thursday. Weak
cold front for the end of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Sunday...

Southwesterly flow will be on the increase today with surface
high off to the east, and approaching cold front, as a system
moves east across the Great Lakes region during the period. Cold
front will enter the CWA late this afternoon/early evening. Out
ahead of the front, heating and increased forcing for ascent will
combine to create a small chance for thunderstorms. There could
be strong gusty winds with any storms that develop, but overall
severe threat is low, and storms should be relatively low topped.
SPC has western zones in a marginal risk. Any storms that do
develop should quickly dissipate not long after sunset.

Showers will continue for the remainder of the period as upper
trough continues its trek across the region. Lingering rain
showers will change over to light snow showers across the higher
terrain counties. Freezing temperatures will take hold across
higher terrain zones of Randolph and Pocahontas counties
tonight, and linger through at least Tuesday morning. Therefore
elected to issue a freeze warning for these zones for tonight
through Tuesday morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 230 AM Sunday...

Models show some precipitation lingering behind a cold front
on Monday. The air is cold enough for some light snow in the
higher elevations of the northern mountains.

A high pressure system will then build in Monday night. With
winds becoming light in Ohio, Kentucky, southwestern Virginia, and
western West Virginia, could see another frost and/or freeze.

A high pressure system will then provide dry weather on Tuesday
into Wednesday.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 230 AM Sunday...

A warm front will provide a chance of precipitation for
Wednesday night and Thursday. South of the front on Thursday
afternoon and evening, some thunderstorms become a possibility.

Models deviate considerably for Friday into the weekend.
Solutions range from a cold front pushing through the region, to
a cold front stalling over the region, to a cold front
remaining north of the area. Therefore confidence in the
forecast degrades considerably for Friday into the weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 120 AM Sunday...

LLWS possible through 10Z Sunday.

Otherwise, VFR conditions through 00-03Z Monday when a system,
and associated precipitation will move into the area, with
widespread MVFR conditions forming. After 15Z Sunday, gusty
southwesterly winds will form, with gusts in the teens to lower
20 kt range low elevations, and 20-30 kt range mountains. In
addition, there is the possibility of isold thunderstorms,
mainly across southeast Ohio and northeast KY, generally in the
20-02Z time frame. Brief strong, gusty winds are possible in
vcnty of any convection.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 06Z MONDAY...

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: Medium.

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Valley fog is still a possibility early
Sunday morning. Timing of precipitation Sunday evening and
associated restrictions may vary from forecast.
