Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 912 AM MST Sat Feb 1 2020 .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night Issued at 415 AM MST Sat Feb 1 2020 Mid and high clouds streaming through the area this morning. Some lower clouds in the west with flurries in places earlier. Windy to very windy in the mountains, Cody Foothills, Rock Springs to Casper, and northwest Fremont County. Another morning of wide ranging temps from single digits to the 50s. For today, the wind will be the story along with the mild high temperatures in most places. High wind warnings continue in the favored locations for today and tonight. Dry weather to occur today and tonight for the region. Highs today will be in the 30s and 40s with 50s to around 60 in places where no snow cover exists. The impending change back to winter begins late Sunday morning into the afternoon in the north and northwest as the cold front pushes in and the snow develops. The front pushes south into central WY Sunday afternoon with snow developing after sunset Sunday evening in the central zones. For the south, the front arrives Sunday evening with the snow starting after midnight. The models track this storm in a most favorable way that it could be one of the biggest storms in the last five years for some places east of the divide. Impacts in the west and southwest will be less, but a decent amount of snow still looks likely. Monday into Monday night looks cold and snowy for much of the area. The north and northwest will see the snow decrease Monday afternoon. Winter storm watches are in effect for many places and may need to be expanded to a few more areas if the models continue to keep this favorable storm track. Travel Monday could be very hazardous in many places. High temps Sunday will be mild in the central and south with slowly falling temps in the north once the cold front hits. Monday will see highs only in teens to mid 20s. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday Issued at 415 AM MST Sat Feb 1 2020 The cold front will be across southern Wyoming Tuesday morning and will continue it's southward track and exit the region. Snow will continue for the southern half of the state for the early part of the day, while the northwest will be in clear skies and the cold air behind the front. The remainder of the state will clear from north to south through the day. There is some nice cold air behind the front, so high temperatures will only reach the teens to low 20s Tuesday and only slightly warmer on Wednesday. Morning lows Tuesday will drop into the single digits, and west of the Divide will see temperatures drop below zero. wednesday morning will see more widespread negative temperatures. Another system will move in Wednesday, bringing significant snow to western areas, and some for the north as well. This snow will last through Thursday. Of a more widespread concern is the winds for the latter half of the work week. There will be some gusty winds developing Wednesday afternoon, mainly for the southern wind corridor and Absarokas. These winds will continue to increase and spread across the forecast area on Thursday and Friday. This will create widespread blowing snow, for hazardous travel conditions across many of the mountain passes and along the I-80 corridor. The good news is that temperatures across the board will finally start warming up Wednesday into Friday. && .AVIATION...18Z Issuance VFR conditions expected across the area through the TAF period KRKS, KCPR and KCOD will have gusty southwest to west winds through into tonight through around 09Z before gradually subsiding. Periods of mid to high clouds will stream over the area today and tonight. A storm system will to the northern TAF sites later on Sunday but any precipitation near TAF sites should hold off until after 18Z Sunday. && .FIRE WEATHER...
