Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1027 AM MST Mon Dec 21 2020 .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night Things are a bit quieter this morning after the wind event yesterday. We still have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect and with webcams showing snow continuing, we will continue it at this time. We have also cancelled the high wind warnings since winds are now below warning levels. Snow showers will continue in the western mountains but coverage should decrease as transitory high pressure builds into the area. Meanwhile, mainly dry conditions are expected East of the Divide for most. The exception would be in the Bighorn Range but any amounts will be minor. It will be breezy today, especially in the favored areas like the Lee of the Absarokas and from Rock Springs to Casper, mainly due to the still somewhat tight pressure gradient. High winds are not expected though. Temperatures will remain above normal and many of the lower elevations will continue to lose snow cover as a result. Winds will increase tonight in the Lee of the Absarokas as the next Pacific front and trough approach. We gave some thought to a high wind watch but it is borderline with the models split on 700 millibar winds. The NAM is the most bullish but the GFS and European are not as impressed. So we will hold off for now. And as for expected sky cover for the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn tonight, it depends where you are. The best chance of seeing it will East of the Divide but even here there will be patchy clouds. In the western mountains, unfortunately things look poor with sky cover expected to stick around in the evening. The next trough and front then swings into western Wyoming on Tuesday morning and moves across the area Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. Most models are in agreement that there is not a ton of moisture to work and that the system is splitting. It still could produce advisory level snow in some of the western mountains. But given the current advisory that is still in effect, we will hold off on any additional advisory so not to confuse people. There is more uncertainty East of the Divide. The precipitaion looks more showery and banded and is very difficult to pinpoint this far out. The models all have different placement of the showers as well. The European does have a brief period of northerly flow upslope so kept amounts a bit higher in the favored areas from Lander to Casper. Amounts are kept light elsewhere although a few spots will get more. Most of the snow should end by Tuesday morning. There will also be some potential for high wind. A favorable northwest flow / cold advection pattern will set up for northern Wyoming. This is especially so for northern Johnson County. Some models have sustained winds as high as 47 knots Tuesday night. This is likely overdone but given 700 millibar winds approaching 60 knots and an approaching 120 knot jet streak. As a result we hoisted a high wind watch for the area. Guidance is more split in the Big Horn Basin though with the NAM saying yes and the GFS saying no. We will hold off on any highlights here for now. Sweetwater County may see strong winds on Tuesday as well but again it is borderline so we will hold off on any highlights for now. Wednesday looks to be a colder day with the area on the fringe of the Arctic airmass moving in the eastern United States. As of now, we kept numbers below guidance but it does not look bitter cold for most. A lot will depend on the depth of the snow cover, which is limited for many areas and depending on which model you believe may not increase much of Tuesday, especially East of the Divide. .LONG TERM...Thursday through Sunday night. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day look dry over the area. Breezy to windy in the central wind corridor both days. Highs Christmas eve in the 20s and 30s with a few 40s east of the divide. Christmas Day highs will be in the 30s and 40s east of the divide with 20s to lower 30s west of the divide. The next weather system looks to impact the west Saturday into Saturday night with some snow. A chance of snow east of the divide Saturday night into Sunday morning. Highs Saturday will be in the 30s and 40s east of the divide with 20s to lower 30s west of the divide. Some light snow may linger in the western mountains Sunday. Otherwise, any light snow east of the divide Sunday morning will end with decreasing clouds. Highs Sunday will be in the 20s and 30s. && .AVIATION...18Z Issuance Issued at 1027 AM MST Mon Dec 21 2020 VFR conditions are expected throughout the period. Some gusty winds are likely this afternoon from KCPR to KRKS and also near KCOD with some gusts to near 30 knots. By the end of the period, expect some winds to start picking up for most of the area with gusts to near 30 knots at KJAC and 35 knots near KCPR.
