.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday

A cold front will begin to sag toward the area today. Northwest
Wyoming should be the area strongest hit. With snow levels at 9000
feet most areas will see rain, with just a skiff of snow near the
peaks for today. Winds will also become gusty this afternoon, but
thankfully not quite as strong as the last few days.

Things change tonight as the jet pushes the cold front south into
the area. The front right quad of a 140+ knot jet max will enter
northern Wyoming with the front this evening. Boundary layer winds
in the Absarokas and Winds are showing 60-75 knots across several
models starting around 00Z through 15Z Wednesday. Ahead of the
front, winds will be at a favorable direction for downslope gusts
into the Cody and Lander Foothills. This has led us to issue a
High Wind Watch for these areas starting this evening and going
through mid morning Wednesday. The Upper Wind River Basin has also
been included in this watch but wind look to remain strong in
this area through Wednesday evening.

As the front continues to move through the area Wednesday, winds
will begin to mix to the surface from north to south. Northern
Johnson County will be first to shift to its favorite northwest
flow, so the High Wind Watch for this area will start near sunrise
Wednesday. By mid morning Wednesday the Wind Corridor from Lincoln
to Natrona Counties will join the watch. High winds will be possible
for these areas through Wednesday evening. Currently, Models do
not reflect winds mixing strong enough to include the rest of the
Wind River Basin or Northern Bighorn Basin. These areas will need
to be looked at again with the next model run.

On top of all the winds, Wednesday will still see some showers in
the northwest as the front pushes through. Most of the activity will
be in the mountains, and any snow accumulation will be Wednesday
morning above 9000 ft.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday night to Monday

Strong northwesterly flow is projected for Thursday, as the jet
will remain over the region. The core of the jet will remain strong
(140+ kt) as well. This will translate to another likely day of
high to strong winds across the forecast area. However, these
winds are not reflected at 700mb and only show 20 to 35 kt. For
now, have left surface winds at ~25 kt. The ridge will nudge
eastward over the West Coast Friday, which will shift the jet over
eastern MT and the Plains. High winds will likely continue over
northern Johnson County as a result and gusty winds continuing
elsewhere.

Precipitation looks to be confined to northern and eastern
portions of WY Thursday. The temperatures at 700mb look to be
cold enough for any precipitation to be in the form of snow,
however accumulations in the lower elevations will be little to
none. A few inches will be possible on the northern end of the
Bighorns Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Another cold front is projected to move in from the north on
Saturday with more precipitation possible. Models differ on how
far south the cold front and the associated cold air will get.
The ECMWF is showing the most benign option with the least amount
of gradient and the highest heights and the Canadian being the
most robust in the cold air push. The GFS shows 700mb temperatures
falling throughout Saturday, with -12C degrees for the
northeastern portions and -8C degrees around Riverton, by Saturday
night. The forecast continue to be highly variable for this period
and will come into better forecast in the next day or two. The
source for this airmass is coming down from northern Canada, which
is contributing to this variability.

Temperatures for the period look to start off within a few
degrees of climatology on Wednesday. A bit cooler conditions are
expected for Thursday. The end of the work week should see a bit
of a rebound before temperatures turn significantly cooler by
Sunday and Monday. MOS guidance on the GFS shows a high on Sunday
of 45 at RIW and 35 for Monday.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

VFR visibilities will exist across all TAF sites through the period.
Winds will be the main issue at all sites as sustained winds will be
above 20 knots and wind gusts could gust up to and over 40 knots
through the TAF period. Ahead of a cold front, VCSH exist at KJAC
from 18Z today through 12Z tomorrow and KCOD from 06Z through 12Z
tomorrow which could lead to some MVFR visibilities until showers
dissipate.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Another cold front will move toward the area today and bring a
chance of showers to northern Wyoming, most numerous in the
afternoon and again Wednesday. Mainly dry conditions will continue
in southern Wyoming. Winds will again be gusty for most areas, but
not as strong as previous days. Critical fire weather is not
expected at this time, but locally elevated fire weather will be
possible in the afternoon in southern Wyoming. Winds will decrease
overnight in the lower elevations, however winds in the mountains
will continue to see strong to possibly high gusts. A High Wind
Watch has been issued for the Absaroka, Wind River Mountains, Cody
and Lander Foothills.

Winds will continue to be an issue Wednesday as the cold front moves
through the area. While winds will slow a bit in the mountains and
foothills Wednesday morning, expect an increase in northern Johnson
County, Upper Wind River Basin, and for the Wind Corridor from
Lincoln to Natrona County through Wednesday evening. A High Wind
Watch has also been issued for these areas.
