.SYNOPSIS...

Active weather returns Saturday into early next week as two storms
bring gusty winds, heavy mountain snow, chances for valley rain
and snow, and cooler temperatures. Low pressure could linger through
much of next week, bringing the continued chance for showers.

.SHORT TERM...

SUMMARY:

* Sierra and northeast CA: Winter storm watches have been
  upgrading to warnings. Expect significant travel (if you MUST
  travel...otherwise stay home!) issues over the Sierra and
  periodically for portions of northeast CA this weekend,
  especially by Sunday.

* For western and west-central NV: Gusty winds are expected
  Saturday/Sunday, especially in the afternoon and evening. Shower
  chances Saturday, mainly in the immediate lee of the Sierra as
  well as north of Interstate 80, will expand across the rest of
  the area later Sunday into Monday morning. LIGHT SNOWFALL IN
  VALLEYS POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING.

Quiet weather will continue into early Saturday before the first
and weaker of two systems affects the region. By late morning
Saturday into the afternoon, snow and lower elevation rain and
snow will move into northeast CA and northwest NV. The system
remains a quick hitter and will exit into Oregon by evening;
however, it is fairly potent and is expected to bring a burst of
precipitation. The heaviness of the precipitation will be key with
regard to travel impacts for the Sierra from about Hwy 50 north
and for northeast California above ~5000-5500 feet (below that
snow unlikely to stick to roads). With dry roads routinely
heating to 30+ degrees above the air temperature this time of
year, the precipitation rates will have to be heavy to get snow to
stick to roads given the daytime arrival of snow. With a burst
expected, one could expect at least a slushy road coverage before
precipitation decreases in intensity Saturday evening (when snow
may melt off roads). With moist upslope flow and snow showers
continuing in northeast CA and the Sierra Saturday night and the
more potent system arriving by Sunday morning, it was decided to
start the winter storm warning Saturday afternoon despite the
potential for a period of improved roads Saturday night.

For the lowest elevations of northeast CA and out into far western
and northwestern NV, scattered showers will be possible as the
wave goes by Saturday afternoon. However, the main story will be
winds with widespread gusts 30-45 mph in the afternoon and
evening...which may be of concern for high-profile vehicles,
especially for wind-prone spots along Highway 395/I-580.

The stronger storm system arrives Sunday into Monday, with the
main period of travel issues for the Sierra and northeast CA
expected as the low drops slowly south along the West Coast.
Snowfall expectations have not changed much today with a
significant snowfall expected in the Sierra (including Mono
County) and above 5000 feet in northeast California, especially
south and west of Susanville. One to two feet of snow, locally
higher, are possible near the crest...see the winter storm warning
for more details of expected amounts.

East of the Sierra, expect another windy day as surface low
pressure intensifies over central NV. Peak wind gusts of 35-45 mph
are expected with locally higher numbers in wind-prone spots along
Highways 395 and 95. As the upper low approaches Sunday night into
Monday morning, the main shot for snow impacts out into western NV
will commence. At this time, areas above 5000 feet will have the
best shot at lightly snow-covered roads; however, details need to
be ironed out yet so stay tuned. -Snyder

.LONG TERM...Monday to Friday...

Main story for next week will be how much time the upper level low
pressure system decides to spend with us. At this time, the low is
in no hurry to depart which means there could be an extended period
of intermittent mountain snow showers with valley rain and snow
pellet showers. Enough lingering instability will be present to
allow for a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms mainly in the afternoon
and early evening hours.

Some uncertainty exist with how far north this banding of showers on
the backside of the low will reach. From a timing perspective the
banding could remain near the I-80 corridor through Tuesday evening
with the best prospects shifting south through midweek across Mono
and Mineral counties. Could see some lingering showers even into
Thursday before the low finally kicks out to the east. Temperatures
will remain cool under the low through about midweek, but should
gradually warm for the second half of the week as upper level
ridging begins to build along the West Coast. Fuentes

.AVIATION...

Modest surface breezes have developed this afternoon with some
light chop over and just east of the Sierra per PIREPs. Winds will
diminish for terminals tonight ahead of stronger winds Saturday.

A couple late season winter storms will push through the region
Saturday and Sunday/Monday. Winds look strongest Saturday afternoon
so be prepared for the usually mountain wave turbulence in and
our of the region. MVFR/IFR/LIFR conditions likely for Lassen to
the Tahoe Basin Saturday PM then most of the Sierra Sunday-Monday.
Across western NV precipitation may be just a few light showers
Saturday (VFR) with high elevation terrain possibly obscured
briefly. A period of rain/snow is likely Sunday into early
Monday with lower CIGS/VIS possible along with extensive terrain
