.SYNOPSIS...
The warm and dry trend will continue through Saturday before a
strong cold front sweeps through the region. The cold front will
bring gusty winds, a few snow showers and rapid drop in temperatures
by Sunday. Breezy north to easterly winds are possible Saturday
night into Monday with much stronger gusts for the Sierra ridges.

.SHORT TERM...

Changes this morning: Wind speeds trending up for the NE wind event
on Sunday-Monday.

Plan for another quiet weather day today with warm temperatures,
light winds, and dry conditions on tap. High pressure will continue
to strengthen across the region, resulting in inversions becoming
stronger across some valleys early this morning and tonight.
Stronger inversions may result in poor ventilation, which will
trap pollutants and smoke. Very dry conditions will persist and
further dry out vegetation across the region. Today and Saturday
will be prime days to prep ahead of the winds forecast for Sunday.
Live in the Sierra, Tahoe Basin, Virginia city, or Mammoth Lakes
vicinity? Doesn't hurt to double check your fencelines, outdoor
items, or nearby trees.

An area of low pressure is still on track to move into northern
CA/NV this weekend, with gusty winds and chances for light snow in
the Sierra. Winds will become breezy on Saturday, which will result
in improved mixing and likely a bump up in the temperatures.
Temperatures will warm up to around the low 60s, but most likely
will not spike up to 73 degrees like last weekend. As the cold
front drops through Saturday night through Sunday morning, there
will be very light snow showers for the Sierra. Light
accumulations, probably less than an inch or two, will be possible
over the Sierra passes by Sunday morning.

The primary concern in the short term remains the same. Very strong
NE winds are probable Sunday night into Monday with Sierra ridge
wind gusts over 100 mph possible. Strong NE ridge winds may result
in ski area impacts, tree damage due to the unusual wind direction,
powerline damage, and rough water conditions across Lake Tahoe. Most
locations below the ridgelines will see gusts around 35 to 45 mph
across the Tahoe Basin and in western Nevada. There could even be
some potential for minor lake shore flooding early Monday morning
along the west shore of Tahoe, depending on how much wind mixes down
to lake level. At this point, gusts up to 45 mph should be expected
for Tahoe. -Edan

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday...

A few changes were made in the day 6/7 time frame based on the most
recent deterministic and ensemble model solutions...but that far out
the changes were not very significant. The early part of the
extended forecast is largely unchanged.

Low pressure eases south-southeast Monday. We do continue to see
gusty Sierra ridge winds Monday...but the overall speeds should be
dropping as we move through the daytime and evening hours.
Still...gusty winds could extend down to the Tahoe basin and prolong
any lake impacts into Monday night.

Cooling behind the upper level low and surface front extends into
Monday before warming starts to take place Tuesday. This warming
begins aloft in response to a building ridge. That could set the
stage for valley inversions through Wednesday with poor ventilation
early each day. Some afternoon low level warming by Wednesday should
erode the valley inversions.

Earlier model solutions hinted at the possibility of light
precipitation Wednesday...but that seems to be gone in the latest
solutions. The ECMWF remains rather aggressive with another front
dropping south Thursday. This is absent from the latest operational
GFS...but some of the GEFS ensemble members show the possibility of
this front. With that in mind...we have made some adjustment to POPs
in the Thursday time period...increasing them a bit over the far
northern part of the forecast area. We have not added much in the
way of QPF as this north to south trajectory would not be conducive
to significant precipitation amounts. Winds could also begin to
increase ahead of any trough that drops south. That would increase
both high temperatures and mixing for Thursday.

.AVIATION...

VFR except for the potential for FZFG around KTRK tonight, along
with light winds. VFR conditions will persist through Saturday
morning ahead of the next cold front. Gusty west winds will
materialize ahead of the front along with the increased potential
for mtn wave turbulence and local LLWS as surface gusts reach to 35
kts.

Behind the front Saturday night into Sunday morning, plan for
isolated MVFR with -SHSN Saturday night into Sunday focused on the
Sierra terminals. On Sunday, gusty NE winds to 30 kts for valleys
and terminals, while Sierra ridge gusts will exceed 85 kts into
Sunday night. LLWS likely in the Sierra, along with significant
mtn wave turbulence. -Edan
