.SYNOPSIS...

Smoke from nearby wildfires will continue to affect the region
through the week. Warm temperatures are expected through Thursday
before a cold front cools temperatures to near or even below normal
for the weekend. Afternoon winds will be breezy through the week,
with stronger winds likely Thursday and Friday. Light showers are
possible near the Oregon border and from the eastern Sierra into
central and eastern Nevada Friday.

.DISCUSSION...

No major changes to the forecast thinking. Here are the highlights:

SMOKE: This feels like a broken record, but smoke continues to bring
degraded air quality to the region. Anticipate similar conditions
the next 24 hours as what we saw the past 24 hours. For the latest
air quality information: fire.airnow.gov or check with your local
county. The big question has been when might we see smoke
clear...unfortunately we don't have a good answer. We should see
more dispersion with stronger winds Thursday and Friday, but also
the potential for fires to burn more actively and produce more
smoke. The flow would need to turn easterly to clear much smoke out
of the area. While low level winds may briefly turn easterly
Saturday into Sunday, the flow will be weak and there isn't much of
a signal we'll see easterly flow through a deep enough layer with
winds quickly turning back to the southwest at ridge top level. The
other unknown is fire activity, but given the current historic fire
situation, we're likely to see smoke/haze impacts to some degree the
week ahead.

WINDS: We'll see another round of southwesterly breezes this
afternoon, with locally locally critical fire conditions possible.
The greater risk will be Thursday and Friday with stronger winds
anticipated due to a dry cold frontal passage. Please see the fire
weather section below for additional details. Winds will also be a
concern for aviation interests and anyone who may be visiting area
lakes.

TEMPS: The cold front will drop temperatures to just below normal
Friday and Saturday, translating to highs in the 70s in the lower
valleys and 60s in the mountains. Saturday and Sunday morning could
see freezing temperatures in mountain valleys with patchy frosts in
rural lower elevation valleys. We'll see temperatures warming back
above normal going into next week, back into the 80s for lower
valleys and 70s in the Sierra.

ANY CHANCE OF RAIN?: A few light showers on Friday is about the best
we can muster at this point. Ensemble probabilities of at least
0.01" of rain have increased in the Eastern Sierra into central and
eastern Nevada, but chances for 0.10" (a wetting rain) are only
about 1 in 10. Light showers are also still possible near the Oregon
border, but best rainfall chances remain north. NBM thunderstorm
probs are around 10% into central and eastern Nevada on Friday, but
looking at soundings and the overall pattern, the thunder risk
appears minimal and so will leave the forecast as showers only.
After Friday, there are no real signals for any type of
precipitation and EC/GFS ensembles are indicating better odds than
not we'll remain dry through the next 2 weeks.

.AVIATION...

Widespread smoke across the region remains the greatest concern for
aviation interests. Plenty of MVFR with localized IFR conditions
present due to smoke. Slantwise visibility is poor with terrain
obscuration likely. Outside of areas downwind of fires, visibility
has been slightly improving during the day due to mixing and an
uptick in winds, but this doesn't mean clear skies, and smoke has
quickly filled back in.

The worst conditions early this morning once again appear to be
focused along the eastern Sierra into western Nevada, in addition to
northeast California.

Otherwise, anticipate south to southwest winds to peak from
approximately 21z-03z with gusts of 15-20 kts possible. The
strongest winds will be located in northeast California and far
northwestern Nevada. A stronger wind event is shaping up for the
Thursday/Friday timeframe with gusts of 30-35 kts possible. -Dawn

.FIRE WEATHER...

** Stronger winds Thursday and Friday with critical fire weather
conditions possible **

Winds today will be similar to yesterday with gusts mainly in the 15-
25 mph range. Dry airmass remains with locally critical fire
conditions possible.

We are looking at both Thursday and Friday having stronger winds due
to a mainly dry cold frontal passage, however recent trends are
indicating that Friday may be stronger than Thursday. Gusts may
reach 30-35 mph on Thursday and 35-40 mph on Friday. Winds aloft are
progged to peak overnight, with midslopes and ridges remaining windy
Thursday night, while valleys are likely to calm down. Based on 40-
50 kt winds at 700 mb (approximately ridge top level), ridges may
see gusts of 70-90 mph overnight into Friday morning.

Winds look to be more south to southwest on Thursday and more
westerly on Friday. Humidity to remain low on Thursday, increasing
somewhat on Friday. However, even with higher humidity, the gusty
winds can easily drive fire spread. The one wildcard at this point
is whether the dense smoke will lead to a weaker thermal gradient
with slightly weaker wind speeds.

We are still seeing signals for light showers near the Oregon border
on Friday, as well as along the eastern Sierra into central and
eastern Nevada. Unfortunately, chances for wetting rain remain low,
less than a 1 in 10 chances based on ensembles. -Dawn
