While winds have generally decreased, a very dry airmass is 
settling over the region. It remains important to keep high risk 
activities at a minimum in regards to potential for starting a 
fire. Winds just along the Sierra crest and areas westward will 
remain gusty with critical fire weather conditions continuing
overnight.

.SYNOPSIS...

Hot temperatures with some record highs are likely through Labor
Day. Areas of smoke and haze from wildfires persists into Monday
with improved conditions expected Monday night through Wednesday.
Gusty winds are likely late Monday into Tuesday along with much
cooler conditions Tuesday behind a dry front. It will quickly warm
back to above average for mid to late week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

Here is a summary of the main forecast concerns:

	- Smoke in Mono County today from the Creek Fire north of Shaver
      Lake (west slopes of the central Sierra).

	- HEAT! Lasts through Labor Day before a brief cooldown Tuesday.
      Above normal high temperatures return Wednesday through next
      weekend.

	- Wind and low humidity late Monday into Tuesday, especially for
      northwestern and west-central NV but also for western NV.

More details if desired:

* SMOKE: Well, we have a new smoke player on the scene with the
  very notable Creek Fire north of Shaver Lake, CA. While this
  fire is well west of the Sierra crest, I mention it because it
  has sent smoke and significantly degraded air quality into Mono
  County with some sensors indicating hazardous air quality from
  Lee Vining southward. A dense smoke advisory has been issued for
  Mono County through noon today (smoke simulations show
  improvement this afternoon). Outside of Mono County, sensors
  indicate mostly much better air quality so far this morning
  although there is some degradation in the Antelope and Mason
  valleys as well as across far northeast CA.

  Smoke and haze will be with us for the remainder of the holiday
  weekend with several active fires in northern CA and the new
  Creek Fire. After a wind shift to north and east winds Monday
  night into Tuesday, most areas should see a period of improved
  visibility/air quality except for areas of southern Alpine
  County and northern Mono County southwest and west of the
  Slink Fire.

* TEMPERATURES: So the general concepts of the forecast through
  Tuesday are holding. Two more days of record or near record heat
  before a dramatic cooldown Tuesday behind a dry front. The heat
  advisory MAY be allowed to expire this evening as, despite the
  big heat on Labor Day, much cooler air moves in Monday night
  into Tuesday. This will be re-examined by the dayshift for a
  final call this afternoon.

* WINDS: Overall, winds will not be a major deal for many folks on
  Monday and Tuesday. However, for late Monday into Tuesday
  morning winds increase from the north and northeast behind the
  dry cold front. With poor to very poor humidity recoveries
  possible for many areas across western, northwestern, and west-
  central NV Monday night, fire weather concerns are increasing.
  See the fire discussion for more details.

* PRECIPITATION: Generally, no. Thunderstorm chances look slim
  this afternoon/evening although conditions appear to favor some
  cumulus development in and near the Sierra as depicted by some
  high resolution guidance. A couple of very isolated and short-
  lived cells could pop up in the Sierra or Pine Nut Mountains of
  far western NV (about a 5-10% chance) by late afternoon...
  something that should be kept in mind for those with recreation
  activities planned in the Sierra backcountry. From Monday
  onward, thunderstorms are not anticipated although afternoon
  cumulus buildups could return late week. -Snyder

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through next weekend...

The Tuesday cooling will be short lived as the upper ridge
rebuilds over the region Wednesday and persists through next
weekend. While not as hot as this weekend, highs are likely to
jump 5-10 degrees Wednesday before rising to the upper 80s to mid
90s for lower elevations, with upper 70s to mid 80s for Sierra
valleys, Thursday through next weekend. There are some simulations
that keep a bit cooler weather in place until Friday; however, an
examination of ensembles mostly supports the warmer solutions with
only around 10-20% of simulations indicating the cooler temperatures.
This does not mean the cooler solutions (perhaps 5-8 degrees cooler
than current forecast for Wed-Fri) won't happen just that it is a
low probability event. -Snyder

.AVIATION...

Smoke from the Creek Fire (located west of the Sierra crest) has
settled into Mono County south of Bridgeport. This smoke will
create visibilities below 3 SM this morning for portions of Mono
County, possibly including KMMH. This smoke could also possibly be
transported to Bridgeport and KHTH. In northeast CA, including
across Lassen and Plumas counties, visibility restrictions from
wildfires are also likely this morning. For the Sierra and the
Sierra Front haze will continue to bring some visibility impacts,
mainly in the form of reduced slantwise visibilities.

Winds will be fairly light today at the terminals with late
afternoon zephyr breezes up to 20 kts from the west. Winds then
increase Monday afternoon (gusts 20-30 kt) mainly from the
northwest, then shift overnight to the north and northeast, and
eventually to the east on Tuesday. JCM

.FIRE WEATHER...

Highlights this forecast cycle:

* Dense smoke advisory until noon today for Mono County for smoke
  impacts from the Creek Fire. (The Creek Fire is located west of
  the Sierra crest).

* Fire Weather Watches remain in effect for Monday afternoon
  through Tuesday evening for gusty northwest to northeast winds and
  low RH.

With high pressure still in control today...hot, dry, and unstable
conditions are in store again this afternoon. Poor overnight
relative humidity recoveries will continue for mid slopes and ridges
with winds fairly light and slope driven. Zephyr winds are forecast
again late this afternoon for northeast California, the Sierra, and
along the Sierra Front. With low humidity, localized areas of
critical conditions are possible for these zones, as gusts could
reach up to 30 mph in some of the more wind prone locations. The
areas of most concern are northern Lassen and Washoe counties as
well as portions of Mono County.

There is a 5-10% chance for a few showers or thunderstorms to
develop this afternoon along the Sierra Crest of Mono and Alpine
counties and possibly also near the Pine Nuts.

Our attention then turns to Monday and Tuesday as a dry, cool front
looks to drive through the eastern Great Basin. Emphasis on the
"dry" part because most of the moisture associated with the front
will likely impact WY, eastern UT, and central CO while extremely
dry air is pushed into western NV, with most locations seeing
afternoon RHs in the single digits and very poor overnight
recoveries Monday night and again Tuesday night.

For Monday afternoon/evening...pre-frontal, northwest winds are
forecast to increase across the region with gusts up to 35 mph
likely for areas east of US-95 and across northern Washoe County.
By Tuesday, winds switch to the northeast (post-frontal) and will
continue to be gusty for much of the region, including the Tahoe
Basin and northeast California. The winds, low RH, and the dry
fuels (especially after the heat we are currently experiencing)
prompted Fire Weather Watches for NV zones 458, 423, 429, 420, and
421 as well as CA zones 270 and 274 from Monday afternoon through
Tuesday evening. Overnight winds into early Tuesday look to
decrease for the Sierra Front and southern Sierra Front regions as
the other areas continue to remain gusty, but have left those
regions in the Watch at this time.

The main area of concern for the northeast winds on Tuesday is
across northeast California and the Tahoe Basin, so a Fire Weather
Watch was issued for CA zones 271, 278, and 272 for late Tuesday
morning to Tuesday evening. Gusts of 25-35 mph are possible,
especially across northeast California. It is important to note that
while valley winds could calm late Tuesday evening, Sierra ridges
will continue to be gusty with 40+ mph winds likely to persist
overnight.

Things calm down on Wednesday as high pressure builds back in from
