AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will weaken over the Carolinas as its center slides
further offshore tonight through Monday. A dry cold front will cross
the region Monday night, with cooler high pressure building in from
the north for Tuesday and Tuesday night. This high will push off the
Mid Atlantic coast on Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /TONIGHT/...
As of 830 PM Sunday...

Forecast is in good shape with only minor tweaks needed. Surface
high pressure centered just off the NE coast will continue to extend
weakly southwestward into NC overnight, yielding surface winds that
are calm to very light from the SSE. High clouds continue to stream
out ahead of the upper level jet over the Central Plains/mid Miss
Valley and the mid level shortwave trough over the Midwest/W Great
Lakes. Lower level moisture and clouds moving into W KY/W TN will
not arrive in central NC until mid to late Mon morning, leaving us
with just fair skies overnight. Temps have already dropped into the
30s across the entire area, along with a few upper 20s in the
typically colder locations, so will adjust lows downward slightly,
to 25-33. -GIH

Earlier discussion from 200 PM: In advance of a cold front that will
move into the Tn Valley by daybreak Sunday, surface high pressure
will shift southeast of the area overnight. Aloft, onset of SWLY
flow in advance of the next shortwave trough that will track from
the mid MS valley, northeastward through the lower Great Lakes by
Monday morning, will result in an increase in mid and high level
moisture/clouds late tonight. This cloud cover could potentially
temper radiational cooling during the latter half of the night. Not
as cold with min temps in the lower 30s, with some upper 20s in the
typically colder spots.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY and MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 200 PM Sunday...

A pair of shortwave troughs traversing east along the US/Canada
border will propel a surface low NE through southern Ontario and
Quebec through Tuesday. Deep westerly flow preceding the front will
deter any appreciable moisture into the area and with the synoptic
scale forcing/ascent staying well north of the area as well, the
trailing cold front will move through the area in a very nondescript
fashion, with only a slight and very brief buildup of cloudiness
across central NC Monday afternoon/evening. Under partly
sunny/cloudy skies, highs Monday ahead of the cold front will warm
into the lower 50s north to upper 50s, which is a good 3 to 5
degrees above normal.

Weak CAA in the wake of the cold front, during the latter half of
the night will driver overnight lows. Lows ranging from lower 30s
north to mid/upper 30s south.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 315 PM Sunday...

Through Tuesday night: In the wake of the front, cold Canadian high
pressure will build east through the OH Valley and into the
Northeast, ridging into central NC through Tuesday night. The sub-
tropical ridge aloft will extend northward through the Southeast by
Wednesday morning. There is still a question regarding how much
cloud cover will be over the area Tuesday night, but with the high
nearly overhead and light winds, radiational cooling is expected to
be good to excellent, resulting in lows bottoming out in the mid to
upper 20s.

Wednesday through Sunday: The sub-tropical ridge will amplify over
the Southeast, into the mid-Atlantic on Wednesday as the upper
trough moves east through the Plains and into the MS Valley through
Wednesday night. The surface low will also lift north through the
Plains and into the Great Lakes through Wednesday night as the high
over the mid-Atlantic shifts east-northward and over the Atlantic.
The attendant cold front will advance east through the MS Valley
toward the east coast of the US. An insitu CAD wedge will develop as
the warm moist air lifts over the cool, dry boundary layer and some
stratiform rain develops over the western Piedmont and Foothills on
Wednesday eve/night. This rain will help keep the CAD locked in and
the temperatures low in the NW. Meanwhile, the cold front will
approach from the west and north as a warm front lifts north and the
wedge front begins to retreat northwestward. How quickly all this
occurs will determine how much instability there will be to work
with on Thursday. As models tend to erode CAD too quickly, will err
on the slower side and keep some remnants of the wedge in the NW on
Thursday. A low will close off in the upper trough over TX on
Thursday as a surface low develops along the TX/LA Gulf Coast. Both
lows will lift north-northeast along the front, through the MS
Valley Thursday/Thursday night and into the Great Lakes by Friday
night. The warm front should lift through central NC by early
Friday, with the entire area in the warm sector under strong
southerly flow. While rain is possible on New Years Eve, there may
be a relative lull in activity before the heavier, convective rain
moves into the area on New Years Day. Current fropa timing appears
to be late Friday/Friday night. A secondary shortwave aloft will
catch up with the leading low, swinging through the region on
Saturday before shifting offshore on Sunday. Expect a return to dry
weather in the wake of the front over the weekend.

.AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 615 PM Sunday...

VFR conditions will continue through the next 24 hours over central
NC. Surface high pressure centered just off the coast of the
Northeast US will continue pushing NE and further offshore, while
continuing to extend southwestward into NC. Only high thin clouds
are expected through Mon morning, then scattered to broken stratocu
will sweep in from the W Mon afternoon ahead of a dry cold front
moving in from the NW. Surface winds will be calm or light/variable
(mainly from the SE or S) tonight, and from the SW shifting W less
than 10 kts on Mon.

Looking beyond 00z Tue, the aforementioned dry cold front, with VFR
conditions, will drop SE through NC Mon night, with surface winds
swinging to NW then N and NE by daybreak Tue. VFR conditions will
hold until Wed, when a warm/coastal front moving in from the S and
SE will bring sub-VFR cigs (mainly to INT/GSO/RDU) and light rain
chances. Sub-VFR conditions are then likely areawide by late Wed
night, dominating through Fri as a strong storm system slowly
approaches from the west. Low level wind shear is possible Wed night
and is likely Thu night. -GIH
