AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Raleigh NC 330 AM EST Mon Nov 16 2020 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will shift off the Carolina coast this morning. Mild high pressure will build in from the west through Tuesday. A strong but dry cold front will cross the area late Tuesday, bringing in cold Canadian air for mid week. Temperatures will warm back up late week into the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /TODAY AND TONIGHT/... As of 325 AM Monday... The cold front has pushed E of the forecast area, with the trailing clouds attending the mid level DPVA now confined to just NE sections and poised to exit shortly. The sporadic gusty NW winds immediately behind the front will continue to decrease in area and frequency this morning, although some gusts under 20 kts may resume this afternoon especially in the NW within the deepening mixed layer. With deep dry and stable air expected today, aided by drying downslope flow, skies should be generally clear. Projected thicknesses within the Pacific-source surface high building into the area are close to normal, and with the abundant sunshine, temps should follow suit, peaking from around 60 to the mid 60s. Expect lows in the 35-40 range tonight with diminishing winds and clear skies beneath the dry ridge and subsidence aloft. -GIH && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT/... As of 330 AM Monday... Continued dry with little to no cloud cover, given the dry surface ridge moving in and the moisture-free profile on model forecast soundings with stable/warm air aloft. Thicknesses will again be near normal, although passage of a vorticity maximum through the base of the broad mid level trough will cross the Mid Atlantic region and draw a dry cold front through the area late in the day, resulting in slightly cooler temps in the NW. Still anticipate highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s NW to SE, with a blustery WNW wind. (These gusty winds along with low RH may bring about some fire weather concerns, although the recent wet weather and resulting higher heavy-fuel moisture may limit this concern somewhat.) Diminishing winds with loss of mixing after nightfall along with clear skies and the incoming chilly air mass (thicknesses falling to 30-40 m below normal Tue night) support lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s. -GIH && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 235 AM Monday... Dry and cool forecast for mid-week and into the weekend. Strong Canadian high pressure over WV Wednesday morning will result in cool and crisp temperatures during the day with most areas seeing upper 40s to low 50s across the region. As the surface high moves over Central NC Wednesday night, clear skies and calm winds will result in excellent radiational cooling. Lows Wednesday night/Thursday morning will be the coldest of the forecast period and will be in the upper 20s across most areas and a few places reaching low 30s in the southeast. Frost is expected to develop Wednesday night. This could be a killing frost, especially where the growing season has not officially ended (Cumberland, Sampson, and Wayne counties) so be sure to bring your plants inside. This freeze could end the growing season for these counties, although it would end November 25th anyways. As the weekend approaches, the surface high moves offshore and temperatures will become near normal with highs in the mid/upper 60s with a few low 70s in the southern coastal plain and lows in the 40s. Clouds will increase Sunday but no precipitation is anticipated. && .AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... As of 150 AM Monday... VFR conditions will hold, with high confidence, over the next 24 hours, although wind profiles may be problematic through this morning. A cold front now over the SE Coastal Plain will continue pushing steadily ESE, heading off the coast this morning. A period of brisk gusty winds from the WNW and NW is occurring just behind the front. This will continue for another few hours overnight as the cooler air rushes in behind the front, but gusts will be sporadic. Brisk 35-40 kt winds from the NW at 1400-2000 ft AGL will bring a risk of low level wind shear at INT/GSO/RDU through about 14z this morning. A few gusts to 20 kts are possible into Mon afternoon mainly at INT/GSO, but otherwise the winds will decrease through the day. Vsbys will be VFR with any cloud bases well up in VFR range through tonight. Looking beyond 06z Tue, VFR conditions will dominate through Fri with high pressure in control.
