AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Raleigh NC 630 AM EDT Thu Jun 18 2020 .SYNOPSIS... An upper-level low centered across southern WV this morning will drift north into western PC by Friday morning. The upper low will weaken as an upper-level trough lingers across our region through Saturday. A Bermuda high pressure system will build into the region late in the weekend into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 340 AM Thursday... The persistent upper-level low that has been present to the south and southwest of central NC for the past several days has moved north and is now centered across southern WV. A surface low that moved from eastern NC into southern VA on Wednesday evening is weakening as it drifts west. The radar is very quiet early this morning with a few showers across the southern Foothills and in the Sandhills. The air mass across the Carolinas is a little milder than previous nights but also more stable. As minor disturbances rotate around the upper low and move across the western Piedmont this morning, isolated showers in the Foothills near the SC/NC border will move across the western Piedmont during the mid to late morning. Most of the remainder of central NC will be dry with pockets of fog and drizzle early this morning, especially across the western Piedmont. Expect the morning stratus and lingering cloud layers to give way to a little more sun today which will support the development of scattered to numerous showers this afternoon along with a few thunderstorms. The greatest convective coverage should be across the western Piedmont in closer proximity to the upper low with convection largely winding down this evening. Precipitable water values have decreased a bit but given the wet soils across much of the area and elevated stream and river levels, localized heavy rain could result in some flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas. Highs will range in the mid 70s across the Triad to the upper 70s to lower 80s elsewhere. Lows tonight will range in the lower to mid 70s. -Blaes && .SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... As of 405 AM Thursday... The persistent upper-level low located over western PA on Friday morning will weaken and become elongated across the mid Atlantic during the period as the upper-level trough axis moves from eastern TN/KY into central NC on Saturday morning. At the same time, a somewhat better defined trough axis at 850 and 700 hPa will be moving slowly east across the Carolinas along with an enhanced ribbon of moisture that will support a resurgence in precipitable water values. This setup will support an increasing threat of showers and thunderstorms on Friday and Friday night with the greatest coverage during the afternoon and evening time period and across the western Piedmont. Expect a good deal of cloudiness during the period but a moderating air mass will support highs in the 80 to 85 degree range and lows in the mid to upper 60s. -Blaes && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 330 AM Thursday... The upper-level trough will linger across the Mid-Atlantic for one more day on Saturday, then weak ridging builds in from the west for the early part of next week. The upper trough will help provide instability aloft for the generation of showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon across the region. Mid-level lapse rates will be around 6 C/km, with ML CAPE mostly around 1500 J/kg and weak shear, therefore storms are not expected to be severe ATTM. SPC's Day 3 Convective Outlook keeps the area in a general thunderstorm outlook. Surface flow will remain southerly as surface high pressure remains well to our east and surface low pressure sets up over the mountains. Dewpoints will be mostly in the mid to upper 60s. As the ridge builds in Sunday, conditions aloft will become more stable than recently. Subsidence and drier air aloft will limit the coverage of diurnal storms to more scattered for the early part of the week, however it will also help heat things up across the region. Continued southerly flow will advect dewpoints in the low 70s into the area, and combined with highs in the low 90s by Monday, the heat index will make it feel close to the century mark. GSO may finally reach 90 degrees Monday. The latest on record in a calendar year that GSO has reached or surpassed 90 degrees is in 1972 where GSO remained below 90 until July 18th. As of 630 AM Thursday... Central NC remains largely precipitation free early this morning with a mix of VFR conditions and areas of LIFR VSBYS and CIGS in low overcast and fog across the area. The restrictions are generally noted in an arc from the Coastal Plain northwest across the northern Piedmont into parts of the Triad. To the south and east across the Sandhills, and southern Coastal Plain, and southern Piedmont, mainly VFR conditions this morning will continue with layers of low and mid clouds. Still expect CIGS to lift and break during the morning and early afternoon across most of central NC. One exception is an area of light rain/showers across the southern Foothills associated with an upper-level disturbance will skirt across the western Piedmont and Triad during the mid to late morning. Scattered showers and isolated storms are expected to develop this afternoon with convection waning during the evening and a period of VFR conditions is expected this evening before areas of stratus try to redevelop late tonight. Looking beyond 12 UTC Friday: An unsettled pattern will transition to a more typical warm season setup during the weekend.
