.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 355 AM MST Fri Nov 6 2020

The main concern in the short term is the expected critical fire
weather conditions.

Today an upper trof will be along the west coast with an upper low
expected to move from off the Pacific NW coast this morning, to over
northern CA by 00Z Sat. Ahead of the upper trof, winds over southern
CO will increase today from the south or southwest and will be gusty
in many locations, with gusts of 25-35 mph over the far southeast
plains and the southern I-25 corridor from around Colorado City and
southward.  High level clouds are expected to spread eastward across
the area today. Temps today will be above average by about 15 to
almost 20 degrees over the southeast plains, and by about 10 degrees
in the high valleys. Highs should be in the 70s over most of the
plains, but some lower 80s are expected over the lower Arkansas
River Valleys from Otero County and eastward, and probably in
portions of Kiowa and Baca Counties.  The high valleys should mostly
see highs in the 60s, with upper 50s and lower 60s in Teller County.
Afternoon humidities over the southeast plains will mostly be below
15%.

Tonight the upper low will move southward over CA and western NV,
leaving breezy southwest flow aloft over southern CO.  Ahead of the
upper trof, moisture is expected to increase along the Continental
Divide, with some light snow expected to develop over the eastern
San Juan and La Garita mtns, and maybe over the higher elevations of
western Lake and Chaffee Counties. Just some light accumulation of
snow is expected over the high elevations of the southwest mtns
before morning.  Mid and high level cloud cover is expected over
much of southern CO overnight which will help keep overnight lows
temps above average.

The extended portion of the forecast can be split up into two
sections, with an impressive low pressure system crossing the region
Sat through Mon, then multiple fast-moving disturbances crossing the
Rockies for Tue through Thu.

Saturday through Monday...Sat morning a longwave trough will be
situated over the western third of the country, with a closed low
centered over central CA. Strong southwest flow aloft will be in
place across the Four Corners and CO, creating strong surface winds
across the forecast area with gusts of 35 to 40 mph for the plains
likely Sat aftn into Sun. This raises the potential for enhanced
fire danger, but at this time it looks as if humidity levels will
remain above critical criteria. Rain and snow pushes into western
CO Sat morning, with snow expected along the Continental Divide by
the aftn. Models indicate that as the upper trough gradually shifts
to the east and approaches CO, the low pressure system "dumbbells"
across the Great Basin and across CO. This action will produce an
initial wave of snowfall for the higher terrain on Sat, a brief lull
on Sun, then another intensification of accumulating snow for Mon.
At this time the mts look to be the real winners with respect to
snowfall amounts and beneficial pcpn, while the plains will stay
relatively dry. Significant new snowfall is anticipated along the
Continental Divide, and the Winter Storm Watch for the southwest mts
looks good for the combination of heavy snow, strong winds and
blowing snow. Will let the next shift fine tune snow amounts and
decide on upgrading, along with any additional areas that may need
an advisory.

Another concern will be the high winds. One lobe of energy will
rotate around the upper low and cross the forecast area Sat night
into Sun morning. This will enhance the already strong wind flow,
possibly creating high wind criteria. Currently, forecast grids do
not support any sort of highlight, but will let next crew have
another model run or two for guidance.

Plan on very warm temps across the plains, and a comfortable day
elsewhere for Sat, then dropping temps Sun and Mon as cloud cover,
pcpn and an approaching cold front cools the region.

The upper system is expected to exit the region late Mon night.

Tuesday through Thursday...Long range models point to generally a
westerly flow across the region through midweek, with multiple
shortwaves crossing the Rockies. These will likely stay
predominantly to the north, keeping more seasonal temps in place for
the forecast area, and a hint of snow chances for the central mts.
There is the chance that the one disturbance on Thu may dip further
south and have more of an effect on the region. Stay tuned. Moore

VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours at all three TAF
sites (KALS, KCOS, KPUB). Gusty south winds to around 20 kts are
expected at KCOS beginning about 21z. Gusty southwest winds to about
20 kts are anticipated at KALS and KPUB beginning around 21-22z, but
there is some uncertainty with these winds at KPUB. Winds are then
expected to diminish at all 3 sites early this evening. High level
clouds are also expected to continue increasing, with mid level
clouds moving in tonight.

Minimum humidities this afternoon over most of southern CO are
expected to be below 15%.  Gusty winds are expected over the far
southeast plains, and over the I-25 corridor from about the Colorado
City area to Raton Pass, where gusts are forecast to be about 25-35
mph.  As a result, the current Red Flag Warning for these areas
looks justified.  Over El Paso County, high resolution models are
not really showing widespread strong wind gusts, but show more
spotty gusts that meet Red Flag criteria.  So, at this time, weather
conditions look a bit marginal for a Red Flag Warning, but will
leave the warning in effect.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

This afternoon, portions of the southeast plains are expected to
have low humidities and gusty winds, which combined with the dry
vegetation, will create high fire danger.  At this time it looks
like the most favorable areas for these conditions are Kiowa, Otero,
Bent, Prowers, Baca, Las Animas, Huerfano and El Paso Counties.

Late tonight, snow is expected to develop over the eastern San Juan
and La Garita Mountains, with possible snow accumulations around
one inch before morning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Accumulating snow is expected to increase in intensity Saturday
over the higher elevations of the eastern San Juan and La Garita
mountains, continuing through Monday night. Total snow
accumulations during this time-frame over the eastern San Juan
Mountains could be between two and three feet, with one to two
feet in the La Garita Mountains. The periods with the heaviest
snow should be Saturday night and Sunday night. The rest of the
mountain areas should see a few inches of accumulating snow
Saturday night, with some additional light accumulations Sunday
through Monday night.

There will be the possibility of a few thunderstorms Saturday
afternoon and Saturday night, mainly along the Continental Divide.
The main storm risks will be lightning, and the potential for
brief heavy snowfall over the high elevations of the southwest and
central mountains.

possible late tonight over the eastern San Juan and La Garita
