Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pueblo CO
1200 PM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1042 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020

Updated to cool high temperatures across the far southeast plains,
where latest higher res guidance is suggesting shallow cool
airmass will be slow to scour out with deepening lee troughing
across the I-25 Corridor leading to easterly low level flow
developing across the plains. Warmest readings will still be
across the southern I-25 Corridor, with breezy westerly to
continue through the late afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 344 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020

Critical Fire Weather Conditions this Afternoon:

-Red Flag Warning issued from 12PM to 7PM over San Luis Valley, Wet
Mountain Valley, Teller County, Fremont County, and the I-25
corridor.

-Expanded the Red Flag Warning to include Teller, El Paso, and
Pueblo Counties.

Confidence: High over the majority of the region, but near critical
fire weather conditions over the upper Arkansas River Valley and
over eastern Las Animas County.

Meteorology and Sensible Weather:

An encroaching trough will create efficient downslope winds off of
the Rocky Mountains, therefore critical fire weather conditions are
expected across most of the region. Temperatures will be above
average, also in response to the downslope winds. Expect high
temperatures this afternoon ranging from the low to upper 70s, the
mountain valleys will be in the mid to upper 60s, and the mountains
will be in the 30s to 40s. Dry conditions are expected throughout
the day.

A cold front will reach our CWA by midnight tonight, traveling from
the northeast to southwest over the plains bringing low clouds as it
passes overhead. Any precipitation will be shortly after the front
passes, which is in the Long Term Forecast period. Some scattered
PoPs have been included during the overnight over the central
mountains, but snow will be light during the overnight hours.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 344 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020

...Winter Weather Arrives Sunday and last into Tuesday Morning...

...Is your swamp cooler drained? Sprinkler system off and blown
out? Is your car winterized? Are you ready to drive on snow
packed/black ice roadways?...

A sharply colder airmass will be moving into the region at the
beginning (Sunday morning) of this long term forecast period. This
weather system will bring plunging temperatures to the fcst area
Sunday and Sunday night, with snow moving in during the period.
Most areas will see snow, but amounts over some areas still need to
be determined.

First...have left winter weather hilites "as is" per coordination
with surrounding WFOs. The brunt of the system will likely not
affect the region until late Sunday afternoon or early Sunday
evening, and the SW mtns and San Luis Valley will likely not be
affected until the Monday morning.

Sunday...

By sunrise Sunday...the front will be through the area. Overcast
conditions will be over the plains with decreasing temps. Some mixed
light precip will likely be occurring over the plains. The heavier
precip will likely remain in a band across northern Colorado and
will likely remain there most of the day. However, steadier snow
will be affecting the central mtns. I anticipate snow will increase
across the Pikes Peak region during the afternoon time period.

The San Luis valley will likely remain quite mild on this day, and
it will likely remain primarily dry in the valley.

As mentioned in earlier AFDs, the max temps for the date (Sunday) on
the plains will occur at 1200 AM mst Sunday morning and the low temp
for the date will occur at 1159 pm mst Sunday evening.

Sunday night...

This will be the best chance for steadier snow to affect the plains.
Believe a band or two of precip will extend SW-NE across the region,
but the question that needs to be determined is *where* this band
will set up, and what will be the intensity and movement of these
band(s)? As we get closer to the event, the hi res guidance will
likely assist in answering these questions. Strong low level
upslope will occur with this system but the upslope still appears
to be rather shallow on most of the guidance. However, the EC is a
bit more deeper with the flow and has heavier snow occurring over
the east slopes of the mtns (both S mtns and San Juans).

Confidence is very high that it will get quite cold Sunday
night/Monday morning and anticipate lows will be in the single
digits or low 10s plains, with 10s in the mountains.

With the cold and snow, roadways will be highly impacted by this
event, and commutes Monday morning will likely be difficult as
this will be the first significant impactful winter storm to
affect the region (Yes, we did receive accumulating snow back on
8-9 Sept, but its impacts were low due to the very warm ground).

Monday...expect heaviest precip on this day will be occurring across
the San Luis Valley and the SW mtns. The Sangres will also be seeing
some good accums this day. The east facing slopes of both the
Sangres and San Juans will likely be favored with this event. For
the SLV, expect the WEST side of the valley floor may see
significant snowfall amounts, and we will likely issue winter
weather hilites for this region later today.

Temperatures Monday will be COLD! expect highs only in the 20s all
areas with much colder temperatures in the mountains. I expect
record low MAX temps to occur on this day.

Monday night...Most of the precip will likely be over with, with the
exception across the SW mtns. It will once again be quite cold
with lows in the single digits most areas.

For the rest of the period...there is still uncertainty regarding
the track of the close low. EC still want to affect the far se
plains WED and THU while the GFS moves it east. The remainder of the
region should remain dry. Guidance temps show quite a bit of range
and confidence is not high regarding how warm it will be later in
the period. \/Hodanish

COS and PUB...VFR conditions with breezy westerly winds developing

419 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions are expected over the San Luis
Valley, the Wet Mountain Valley, Fremont and Teller Counties, as
well as the I-25 corridor. Gusty winds and dry conditions accompany
the critical fire weather conditions. A cold front will pass
overhead late this evening, bringing gusty winds over the plains.
Light snow will begin to fall over the Continental Divide during the
overnight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

A winter storm will impact the region Sunday into Tuesday morning.
There is very high confidence that this system will bring very
cold air into the region, and temperatures are expected to be 30
to 40 degrees below normal for this time of the year, especially
on Monday. Snow is near certain for most of the area, but how much
snow we will get still needs to be determined. In either case,
snow packed and icy roadways will be possible starting Sunday and
lasting into Tuesday. Monday mornings commute will likely be
difficult due to the snow packed roadways and very cold air.

For the San Luis Valley region and the San Juan mountain areas,
the brunt of the cold air and snow will arrive late Sunday or
Sunday night and last into early Tuesday. Significant accumulating
snow is possible for these regions, especially the western
sections of the San Luis Valley and eastern slopes of the San Juan
mountains.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible this tonight over the Continental Divide.
