Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1022 AM MST Sun Dec 27 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 452 AM MST Sun Dec 27 2020 Still a few light snow showers over the central mountains early this morning, though satellite/radar trends suggest these will taper off to mainly flurries the next few hrs. Dry elsewhere, with pockets of downslope winds keeping temps mild in the lee of the eastern mountains. Have seen some strong winds just south of the CO/NM border (Raton gusting to 57 kts) the past few hrs, as wind profile is more favorable for strong/damaging winds just south of the area, while strong forward shear keeps winds from becoming too strong farther north. For today, expect a lull in snowfall along the Continental Divide for much of the day, before snow showers begin to redevelop over the ern San Juans late in the afternoon as mid level moisture increases. Max temps will be cooler today at most locations, though still a little above seasonal averages, especially across the plains. Tonight, as western U.S. upper level low deepens and slides eastward, swly mid level flow and increasing moisture begin to impact the ern San Juan and La Garita Ranges, bringing a gradual ramp-up in snowfall over these areas through the night. Could see several inches of accumulation by early Mon morning over the higher elevations and west facing slopes, with snow packed roads over Cumbres and Wolf Creek Passes by sunrise. Farther north and east, higher peaks of the Sangres and Sawatch Range will see snow develop after midnight, with a few inches of accumulation over west facing slopes by early Mon morning. Interior valleys will see some spill over snow showers at times, though accums at lower elevations will be light. Along and east of the mountains, clouds will thicken overnight, with perhaps a few flurries late along the Palmer Divide and over the plains north of the Arkansas River. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 452 AM MST Sun Dec 27 2020 Monday into Tuesday night... The main forecast concern for the first part of the work week will be an ongoing storm system that is anticipated to bring snow to the mountains and Pikes Peak Region, and gusty winds to the plains. Flow aloft transitions from westerly to more southwesterly Monday as the upper-level trough continues translating east across the Great Basin region. This trough is also anticipated to continue supplying moisture to the region. Meanwhile, surface flow is expected to generally south to southeast for areas east of the Continental Divide out ahead of the approaching trough. Latest guidance also indicates that moderate to strong southerly flow is expected at 700 mb as well, bringing some decent warm air advection to the I-25 corridor and plains Monday into Monday night. However, it appears portions of these areas will end up being dry slotted, mainly areas east of I-25 and south of El Paso County. As the trough continues propagating east on Tuesday, a surface low is expected to develop and a cold front is anticipated to move through the plains Tuesday afternoon. Flow aloft then shifts to the north as the trough exits the region Tuesday night, bringing an end to any precipitation by Wednesday morning. Several impacts to varying degrees are anticipated with this system, including the following: 1) Mountain Snows The transition to southwest flow will provide efficient upsloping to the southwest facing slopes, particularly the eastern San Juans where an additional 2 feet of snow is possible Monday into Tuesday night. Therefore, we have the Winter Storm Watch continuing until 11 pm on Tuesday. Up to a foot of snow is possible for the remaining mountain ranges. Have decided not to issue any highlights for these areas at this time, but will likely need at least advisories if model trends continue. 2) Pikes Peak Region Snow Potential Latest guidance from the NAM, Canadian, and now GFS are showing the potential for some moderate snows Monday night over the Pikes Peak region, including Colorado Springs, with model output in the 4-6" range. With the southeasterly flow at the surface and warm air advection at 700 mb, it is possible that this scenario could occur. Confidence is on the lower side that these amounts will be realized at this time, though. To account for this possibility of moderate snows, did bump up snow totals to the 2-3" range from Colorado Springs northward. 3) Plains Winds and Snow Potential As the cold front moves through on Tuesday, gusty northerly winds are anticipated to develop. Accumulating snow is looking less and less likely over the plains, so blowing snow does not to appear to be as much of a threat except for the aforementioned Pikes Peak region. That said, there is potential for some wrap- around moisture across the far eastern plains, depending on where the surface low develops and tracks. 4) Temperatures Afternoon highs cool off another 10 degrees F for Monday across the plains into the upper 30s to lower 40s. Temperatures then warm up a degree or two for Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday... Temporary ridging moves over the area for midweek, which keeps the area mainly dry and quiet. Highs on Wednesday are anticipated to be quite cold after the frontal passage with highs mainly in the 20s and 30s for the lower elevations. Temperatures rebound some across the plains on Thursday with highs reaching the lower 40s. Friday... The next shot for precipitation comes at the end of the week, as the next disturbance moves through the region. At this time, it looks to bring only minor impacts. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1018 AM MST Sun Dec 27 2020 KALS...winds will be diurnally driven for much of the period and remain less than 10 kts. VFR conditions are expected through this evening, with snow showers moving into the San Luis Valley after 10z/Mon. CIGS will lower to MVFR late tonight into Monday. KCOS and KPUB...gusty northwest winds 25 to 30 kts are expected to continue this morning, before weakening and shifting more easterly from mid afternoon through early Monday. Daytime accumulations will be less than an inch, with the best chance for snow over the Sawatch and Mosquito Mountains. Overnight, the eastern San Juan and La Garita mountains will see heavy snow, with 4-8 inches possible by Monday morning. Over the Sawatch, Mosquito and Sangre de Cristo ranges, overnight snow will range from 1 to 4 inches. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday Snow is expected to continue over the mountains, with the heaviest snows occuring over the eastern San Juans. An additional 1 to 2 feet are possible over the eastern San Juans. More moderate snow amounts of 6 to 12 inches are possible over the Sawatch, Mosquito, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Snow is anticipated to spread east to the Pikes Peak region Monday night. Locations from Colorado Springs north could see 2 to 3 inches of accumulation overnight, with some locally higher amounts possible.
